Kris Neri (krisneri) | 12 comments This isn't precisely a cozy book, but it is by a cozy author - Dorothy Gilman. I had the good fortune to come across an old, used copy of one of Gilman's early middle reader books. This is kind of a Revolutionary War suspense novel for kids. It was clearly written during the years of her marriage, because it ID's her as Dorothy Gilman Butters. I guess Mr. Butters departed sometime thereafter.

(Isn't Mr. Butters the dog that plays keyboard for a parrot in some commercial? I digress...)

It's a good story of a young English boy who was kidnapped in England, brought to the Colonies, and sold as a slave/indentured servant. He passes from a cruel master to an opportunistic counterfeiter, who is actually kinder to him and becomes his friend, despite the counterfeiter's dubious moral judgments. Eventually, since the Revolutionary War is just starting, he becomes a spy for the rebels. The boy is forced to make a lot of important choices, such as whether to do the right things because they're right, even if they're not always the most practical decisions he could make.

I'm sorry this book is out of print, because I think it would entertain and teach young readers just as much today.

I think this was the first Christie I read, and I loved the clever plot twists.

Oh no! I read and loved the first two in this series and I've been trying to hold off on grabbing this one. With this review I won't make it to the end of the month. :)

message 3862: by Misty (new)

Misty Thanks to the nasty stomach bug that my children so generously shared with me, I have spent the day in bed! All was not lost, however, as I had the chance to read Corpse Pose. The book took a while to get going, but in the end, I enjoyed it. I will most likely read other books in this series.

message 3863: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Finished Murder by Mocha Murder by Mocha (Coffeehouse Mystery, #10) by Cleo Coyle . This is the latest in the series (I've read them all) and in many ways the deepest and most layered of the series. Really liked it.

Misty Well, I actually read two books yesterday, and if I hadn't been so sick, it might have felt luxurious! LOL. I read Janet Evanovich's One for the Money, and I really enjoyed it. I have the next 13, so I think I'll be reading more of them! :)

Jennifer, I'm not familiar with the book, but now I want some chocolate/mocha, something about 'layered' makes me hungry for cake.

Girl, I hear you. I don't think it's an accident that I took up drinking lattes and cappuccinos the same year I read this series. And some of the recipes for pastries in these books look like printed sin.

Dian Macnichol | 28 comments Erin, I agree with you on this one...it was a chore to finish this book and I still can't tell you what the mystery really was or who did what. Really think it was a combination history and tour book for San Francisco. Great title made me read it.

Finished Dashing Through The Snow by Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark. This was a fairly good fast read. Liked it much better than Santa Cruise.

message 3889: by bella (new)

bella (thespiceflows) I just finished Killer Cruise (A Jaine Austen Mystery, #8) by Laura Levine by Laura Levine. This one was definitely better than the previous one, and I think this series is winning me over again :)

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) After waiting for it to finally arrive from Amazon, I finished It Takes a Witch (A Wishcraft Mystery, #1) by Heather Blake yesterday. I wasn't sure at first, there were a few disney-esque moments, but by the end I was ready for the next one. Really enjoyable, and likeable characters and the plot was solid, with red herrings and small twists.

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 217 comments I finished Hex Marks the Spot (A Bewitching Mystery, #3) by Madelyn Alt ..4*s..Im really liking this series alot but I cant make up my mind between Tom & Marcus...im leaning towards Marcus looking forward to reading the next book in the series very soon.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished The Cat Sitter's Pajamas (A Dixie Hemingway Mystery #7) by Blaize Clement . Not my favourite in the series, but I liked it. I hate when an author gets me used to the status quo and then screws with it. That's all I'm saying about that. Good mystery though and it was great to 'visit' my home again. :)

message 3893: by Kaye (new)

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Finished Fudge-Laced Felonies by Cynthia Hickey . It started out okay and then went down hill. The characters acted like junveniles and the mystery was not too good. 2*

message 3896: by Emma (new)

Emma | 109 comments Just finished Witches' Bane by Susan Wittig Albert and loved it!! I meant to read it around Halloween but alas, I am far behind on my pile. I know I am late to this series as everyone seems to be up to date on her books but I am glad I finally "discovered" her. I have the next one ready and while I am reading a wonderful historical mystery, Drood by Dan Simmons I am feeling a tug on my shoulder telling me to read Hangman's Root. I think I may have to break my habit and read 2 books at once!

message 3897: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Randall (tammommy) Just finished The Long Quiche Goodbye (A Cheese Shop Mystery, #1) by Avery Aames . It was the first in that series, and first I read of hers. Not bad. Started out slow but I grew to like it.

Just so you know Emma...I used to be a one book at a time person, but...now I keep a book in the car to read anytime things happen to make to have to wait somewhere, one in my purse and one by the bed at home. Now, if I really get into one of them, I will change it out and carry it with me at all times, but I find that it just helps to know that I have something to do if I have to wit somewhere anymore.

I wish I could do this. I'm a one book at a time person and just make sure I religiously carry it around in my handbag! I'm always reading if my husband runs into a store or is filling the truck with gas!

message 3900: by Linda (new)

Linda Just read the last page of Liz Lipperman's Liver Let Die (A Clueless Cook Mystery #1) by Liz Lipperman . What a great start to this delightful new cozy series! The author has cooked up a quirky protagonist with a batch of eccentric friends as her sidekicks. Toss in a smidge of romance and you have yourself one heck of a fun cozy. Highly recommended.
