Kelley (booknerd69) It's funny, the mother in Buzz Off didn't bother me that much. I mean, she was annoying, but what was off-putting to me was all of the "bullet points". She listed them as bullet points, she told people she was giving them bullet points...really? We need that many?? I really enjoyed the story and the characters, but that part was a bit much. I know every book needs a hook or a catch nowadays, but this one is not to my liking.

message 1352: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Interesting the different points of view folks have. I didn't actually consider the mother annoying, I considered her a witch that starts with a different letter. Maybe she gets better later on but it bothered me enough to put down the book and I haven't picked it up again yet. I've got plenty of other books to read so it's easy to move on.

No, they really don't have to be read in order, though it does help in following the growth of the relationship between Claudia and Joel.

It's interesting to see so many people here who didn't like Buzz Off. I'm on the complete opposite end of the spectrum it seems. I loved it, and didn't mind the mother or the bullet points at all. I'm wondering if that might be due to the fact I've never read any of her Deb Baker books?

I finished Farm Fresh Murder at about 6:40 this morning. Not intentionally and no, I was not up reading all night. I was actually in bed around 11 o'clock last night, and woke from a disturbing dream around 6am. Couldn't go back to sleep right away, so decided I might as well read the last couple chapters. A lot of people didn't seem to like this one, but I did - though I'm wondering...has anyone here ever had pumpkin preserves? Never heard of it before this book.

message 1354: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I finished Bookplate Special tonight. Ok...I think if I knew Tricia in real life she would NOT be a friend. She is far to self-important and judgemental. My diet, clothes, and life choices would be a huge turn-off for her...lol. I've read alot about her sister and how unlikeable she is but I like her much more than Tricia. I will read Chapter and Hearse cause I've already got it. But I'm not going to rush to do it.

I've got BUZZ OFF and am now in NO hurry to read it! I'm one of the people who REALLY did not like FARM FRESH MURDER. I've never had pumpkin preserves, but I have had pumpkin butter and it's very good!

I don't like Tricia at all. Her whininess, her judging attitude.....she's a bitch! I like Angelica much, much more.....and Tricia resents her, so there you go! And Tricia thinks she has everything figured out.....

SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's a part in CHAPTER AND HEARSE where she's going to bake blueberry muffins. But she substitutes low-fat spread for butter because butter is just full of fat, and she doesn't have baking powder so she substitutes baking soda. No blueberries so she subs Craisins.....on and on, you get the idea. And she gets something that's inedible and can't figure out why. STUPID!! STUPID!! STUPID!!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Melodie wrote: "SPOILER ALERT...here's a part in CHAPTER AND HEARSE where she's going to bake blueberry muffins. But she substitutes low-fat spread for butter because butter is just full of fat, and.... "

LOL... Melodie - I got to that part and it was just so stupid I skipped through it and didn't read it. Thinking back to the series as a whole I guess my only real complaint about her sister was her attitude about publishing her cookbook, which I ranked up there with the blueberry muffin debacle, and her initial dislike of Tricia's cat. I tend to distrust/dislike anyone who doesn't like cats (or animals in general). :)

I tended to ignore her food issues while reading, but you're right, she is awfully up herself. lol

message 1358: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Like I said - different strokes for different folks. I ignored the stupid food part in Chapter and Hearse and I still read the series and like it (although part of that may be because I've known the author for ages and like her writing style while I may not always love all her characters). And Farm Fresh Murder was an enjoyable read for me. I actually got a pumpkin cookbook from Libby's one time. Pumpkin soup and pumpkin chili are great! LOL

Caroline | 661 comments I actually just finished Pepperoni Pizza Can Be Murder (Pizza Lovers, #2) by Chris Cavender and really enjoyed it (although it made me hungry for pizza!). I don't know if there will be more in this series (since Tim just started a new one under the name Casey Mayes) but I'd like to read them if there are.

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Just finished Chocolate Dipped Death (A Candy Shop Mystery, #2) by Sammi Carter and it was a pretty good read. Now on to Dead Over Heels (Aurora Teagarden, #5) by Charlaine Harris

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 821 comments I finally finished Spackled and Spooked. It wasn't quite as good as the first one, but still very enjoyable. I'm off to the library tomorrow to pick up the next book in the series. The library is also holding Wicked Witch Murder for me!

message 1362: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I finished Quick Study (A Murder 101 Mystery, #3) by Maggie Barbieri today. I just love this series. I've not liked the 2nd and 3rd in the series as much as the first...but still enjoyed them alot. The 4th in the series is out in hardback and I'm debating getting it or waiting for it in paperback later this year. Decisions! lol

The Moonstone would also be included on tha tshort list...we must have similar 'reading DNA' Helen!

message 1365: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I finished Elvis and the Grateful Dead (A Southern Cousins Mystery, #2) by Peggy Webb this afternoon. I liked it and will read the next in the series..but I wasn't as enamored with it as I was the first one.

Vicky (ladyvictoria5) | 218 comments I just finished Death of a Witch by MC Beaton. Okay but don't pick it up thinking it follows a Halloween theme. It doesn't.

I finished another cozy by an author who was new to me. I thought the setting might be in Utah as the author lives here. It's set in Colorado wo I was disappointed.

However, that was the only disappointment! I was very impressed with Lemon Tart by Josi S. Kilpack. This one doesn't have a business or hobby involved, unless home cooking is it. I'm anxious to try her lemon tart recipe. Not too complicated nor gourmet, just something I might put together and enjoy.

The characters are good but, like a Miss Marple, the mystery is the center is the story. Sadie is a strong woman and faces her problems with courage and resourcefulness.

This is the best mystery I've read this year.

Leslie Finished Scoop to Kill (A Mystery a La Mode, #2) by Wendy Lyn Watson tonight. I really like this series and can't wait for the next one. All I have to say is *blows raspberry* to the ending! LOL

I just finished it, too, and am giving it 5-stars. Something about this series just resonates with me for some reason and I really like them. I agree about the ending, but I still loved it!

It was fantastic, especially for us cat lovers! I am moving on to the second book in the series.

Caitlin C (caitkom) | 199 comments Just finished Rotten to the Core (Orchard Mystery, #2) by Sheila Connolly by Sheila Connolly. I loved it. I loved how the main character wasn't poking her nose in other people's business trying to find out clues and get herself killed. It was refreshing.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I finished Buzz Off by Hannah Reed . It was just okay. I'm sure it might have been better had the bullet points thing not driven me to distraction. I agree with Caroline that Story's mother is a bitch, too. I'll not be in line for any more in the series.

I'll keep it on my Wish List Melodie, but I don't think I need to be in a hurry to read it ;) I'm pretty sure the bullet points will be annoying for me too.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I finished Murder Uncorked (A Wine Lover's Mystery, #1) by Michele Scott , which finishes up my September challenges!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I just finished Arsenic and Old Paint by Hailey Lind as the first book for my Autumn challenge.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, as I've enjoyed the previous books in the series. This was the first with a new publisher though and I don't know if it's because of a new editor, or just a natural progression for the authors, but I found this story to be just a bit more "mature" in the sense that there were no more silly mad cap situations where the main character is sacrificed by her art-thief partner. The characters are still themselves, and the story was interesting to me. I'm looking forward to future books in this series.

message 1385: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (booknerd69) Just finished Lead-Pipe Cinch by Christy Evans. It was a very quick read. Story was simple and harmless and I am not sure I will continue with the series. The character and the author both seem to be having a hard time deciding what direction that Georgie should take. It's hard to tell what the author wants for her character to do.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I finished Murder Uncorked (A Wine Lover's Mystery, #1) by Michele Scott , which finished up my September challenge & AOM books. Very quick read. The wine talk had my eyes glazing over, but the story wasn't bad. I would have never read anything in this series if not for this challenge. I won't read anymore, but was good to try something I wouldn't have tried otherwise.

Caitlin C (caitkom) | 199 comments Just finished Murder by the Glass (A Wine Lover's Mystery, #2) by Michele Scott by Michele Scott, it was a light quick read. Went wine tasting with my husband this weekend and had to laugh because the tour guide started talking about the Brix test which is used to test the sugar in the grapes. I remembered learning about the Brix in the book!!! My husband couldn't understand why I was so excited!

Nat is a pain, but she sometimes gets hers so it evens out. I really like this series and am looking forward to the new one in early December.

message 1390: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments I'm with you, Melodie (as usual). I enjoy the Diva series and am looking forward to the new one. (Also Krista Davis is really nice and I like her sense of humor). I just finished Deadly Daggers (Renaissance Faire Mystery) by Joyce Lavene and really enjoyed it. The characters seem to be maturing a bit (not getting into childish spats although they have differences from time to time). And I almost always like the Lavene's books. I admit, I'm prejudiced. I've met them at Malice several times and they're great fun.

message 1393: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I'm starting Unplugged by Lois Greiman . I enjoyed the first one and would have read the second anyway..but it's one of my AUTUMN challenge books and I'm hoping not to be finishing this challenge on the last days!

message 1394: by Miki (new)

Miki | 148 comments I just finished The Missing Ink by Karen E. Olson. I really enjoyed this book. I am going to look for more in the series.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Julie Kaewert's Unbound as my second book in the AUTUMN challenge. It's a really good book, the story is great and very absorbing. My only complaint would be a little too much introspection on the part of the protagonist. Some of the internal dialogue just goes on forever and I found myself skimming over it. At 415 pages, it's a hefty "cozy" and all that internal dialogue sometimes made what is actually a fast moving story feel as thought it were plodding along. Will continue with this series (especially as many of them fit both Autumn and Clue challenges) but am taking a break before starting the next one.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Ended up with an afternoon with nothing on, so I finished Pasta Imperfect. Eh. It was so-so. The author is very good with character development, and I get a hoot out of the whole cast of characters, but I found the mystery itself was weak and disjointed.

I'll keep reading the rest in the series, but it won't be for the mysteries, I think.
