I wasn't terribly impressed with it Elle, glad I didn't pay more that 99p for it.Just finished One Strange Christmas and started Winter in Madrid
Just finished Dreamlander - all 500+pages! A different kind of fantasy book. Written by an author friend, K.M. Weiland. I enjoyed it! (rated at 4.5 stars, and reviewed). Now I'm going to finish A Splendid Salmagundi ;)
Just finished Hunger -Lord of the Flies with "and then something really bad happened" added.Got a sudden desire for pizza...
Last night I finished Mistletoe And Magic - Gina Ardito. I started A Cleansing of Souls - Stuart Ayris last night.
Just finished The Marriage List, I don't know if I was in a bad mood or something but the hero and heroine drove me nutty! They kept making the CRAZIEST dicisions! The only up side was that I liked the secondary characters... so I bought the second book in the series Lady Iona's Rebellion. Big mistake!!!
Both characters were completely diferent to how they were in the first book. The author went to great lengths to show that the hero was NOT the cad everyone made him out to be, and then she had him do the most caddish things possible!!! Didn't finish it I was so disappointed.
Read and enjoyed One Strange ChristmasStill reading Black is the Colour by one of our newest members.
I finished Hell House by Richard Matheson, gave it 5*. Then read opening my eyes helps me see clearly, didn't really enjoy it. This month I am reading books I bought last year, I suspect some will be binned
Review here for Darren Humphries' short stories Sharing A Fence With The Twilight Zonehttp://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
If you know his work you won't be surprised at the quality but the subject matter is unexpected in places. Good stuff, this.
finished Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which is a fantastic book, and started Beatrice and Virgil

Everything is Illuminated is a book that really seems to divide readers. I thought it was good but nothing amazing. Many people feel it is too tricksy.
Just started A Redbird Christmas by the wonderfully named Fanny Flagg - can't find it here and it's not available for kindle. It's our December village book group read. I'm about a third of the way through and so far I'd put it in the category of 'heartwarming'. I suspect it might turn out to be oversweetened but we'll see.
Ignite wrote: "Thanks - I told you I'm a techno-twerp!Edit - I looked for Fanny! what a ... well.. you know!"
I just put Redbird Christmas in title lol x
Following a recommendation I'm currently reading Natural Causes by a local indie author who writes thrillers with a supernatural slant. 33% in and he strikes me as a cross between Rankin and McDermid.By coincidence I then read in the newspaper yesterday that he has been signed up by Penguin.Grabbed both his books before the price rises! This one was a bargain at 66p.
I've read both those Sarah, both good books, not to much supernatural, the first one had a few typos, but the second one was perfect.I'll read the third.
Philip (sarah) wrote: "Following a recommendation I'm currently reading Natural Causes by a local indie author who writes thrillers with a supernatural slant. 33% in and he strikes me as a cross between Rankin and McDerm..."careful with these two books though cos, as they have been reissued, amazon don't say if you bought the previous issues. check first...

Just finished the illustrious Fannie Flagg's A Redbird Christmas which was predictably very twee. Over sweet. I loved Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe as the light had its contrasting darkness. I found this just too much really. Ok if you want an undemanding 'nice' story though.Just started Treespeaker by 'our' Katie W Stewart. Been looking forward to this one!
I've finished A Cleansing of Souls - Stuart Ayris. Now going back to Private Games - James Patterson.
I've just finished Cecilia Peartree's new release "Five Short Stories". Three of them are Pitkirtly stories. Two of them are Apocalypse stories, one's characters are going to be in her next book.In all, 5 stories and I enjoyed them all.
I've still not got very far with Nicholas Nickelby.
I have a collection "next to read", I need a new collection "no, these ones are next to read" :)
I've finished reading
by Charlotte Rogan yesterday. The Lifeboat is the debut novel of author Charlotte Rogan. It is a compelling, gripping and extremely thought-provoking tale. This novel tells the story of survival at its most basic level. It explores human nature and morality. It shows what happens to people while they are fighting to stay alive. The novel is a psychological thriller really. The book is very well-written. I really loved the author's writing style. I was completely engrossed in this novel from the very first page. The way in which Charlotte Rogan describes the moral decisions the characters have to make is quiet chilling. My full review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Now I'm halfway through
by Sophie Kinsella.
Louise-Lesley (Elle) wrote: "I finished Aesop's Fables last night after like... 4 months (if not more.......)"I'm getting like that with the Grimm's fairytales book I'm reading. Can't even remember how long ago I started it.
Just finished Treespeaker by Katie Stewart - what a stonkingly good story - review soon.Just started The Ice Marathon by Rosen Trevithick.
Finished Natural Causes It was okay but didn't grab me as much as some other books I have read recently.
Being in festive mode today, read Reindeer Dust by Bill Robertson which was really good. Then read Appreciating Angels: Sarahs Story Which was rather strange,a mix of spiritual and erotic if that's possible. It certainly held my attention!
Ready now to start A Wee Christmas Homicide
morning all. I'm posting this via the goodreads app so apologies if it looks unusual. I've just finished snowdrops by A.D. Miller and very good it was too. The life, and lifestyle, of the narrator is enthralling, as is Moscow.
The description of the environments are superb. I don't know how accurate they are since I haven't been to Russia but the writer creates a very real setting for the book which draws you in.
The plot is essentially a confession. Funds are given to a company to pump oil but it is all a scam. Meanwhile the narrator falls for a woman who takes money from him also.
In the end he returns to London. His career is compromised, he has been exploited and yet still he misses his old life in Russia.
very good, well worth a read.
I read this last year for our village book group (meeting tonight!) Jamie. I agree it was fabulously atmospheric.Just finished Rosen's Ice Marathon. Both thoughtful and funny. Off to cook village Christmas meal but I'll review later this afternoon.

Sounds like a story I've over-heard in many an ex-pat pub over the years.
I've started reading Game of Thrones again today. How the heck does one keep all the characters straight???

Keeps mouth firmly shut as sarcastic answers fill my mind ;)

With difficulty, took me a while but I got there. Then the confusion happened all over again in book 5 when a lorry load of new characters appeared.

That's not like you. ;)
I found it impossible to get into the "Game of Thrones". Do you think it is it after the style of "Lord of the Rings" and is it possible to wind a conspiracy around it. What I mean is like the rise of fascism with Lord of Rings and fall of globalisation with "Game of Thrones"Am well on the way with "The Black Mile", Mark Dawson which I am finding absolutely brilliant characters well developed, good story line and time frame absorbing. Cannot recommend the book highly enough.
Finished A Wee Christmas Homicide It was okay but a tad slow for my liking.Read The Perfect Treat: Heart-warming Short Stories for Winter Nights excellent seasonal short stories by various authors, spoiled IMO by each one being followed with an excerpt from the author's next book.I estimate more than 50% was made up of these samples!
