they can't be present in the same form since the book is set in Africa along the Congo, the film in Vietnam/Cambodia along the Mekong. There are shared images of course, the heads on stakes etc, but you're comparing a nineteenth century setting & technology with a second half of the 20th Century one

Perhaps I should have been clearer. I meant that all the same themes are there. I don't think the technology or setting is all that relevant to the narrator's search for Kurtz, the rogue element. It's about the fascination with Kurtz, and the power that character seems to have on all those around him in both book and film.

I agree with that, hence I said the film was more of a reinterpretation of the book, than the making of a film of the book. The film would not exist without the Conrad book as its source. having said that, I do think Coppola has created something different & genuinely creative in his own right in his film.

Oh yeah, the film definitely has Coppola's unique stamp on it alright. He uses the different setting extremely well. And don't get me wrong, I love the spin he has put on Conrad's themes!

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments It's a genuinely literary film, which is rare. It references the link between TS Eliot's "Hollow Men" and Conrad's novel. Plus Brando's Kurtz's literary musings

Matthew McFarland (matthewwmcfarland) | 46 comments I wasn't aware of the background to "Hollow Men", interesting stuff!

I've just finished reading Stet: An Editor's Life which was a very interesting account of the early publishing industry.

Now I've just started The Girl on the Wall: One Life's Rich Tapestry which I've had for ages, bought in a sale some time ago. I've only just started but have found it to be very well written so far - it may interest some of the crafters on here as she is using a tapestry of her life as structure to the chapters of the book.

:0)

message 3725: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Finished A Splendid Salmagundi
Amazed at the diversity of the content.Where else could one read of pigeons alongside buffalo.Santa following on from demons and mild erotica.
Reviews of wrinkle plasters and the shortcomings of hygiene facilities in public toilets in the same contents table as haunted car journeys and inspired poetry.
Trolls and fantasy friends, feuds and spaceships share space with resurrected detectives, barn sized computers and pyramids not to mention traumatised fathers, dying girlfiends and country villages called Slaughter.
I will dream tonight of darkened corridors and monsters at my door seeking permission to enter while God speaks to me and my life support is switched off. I am however comforted to know those pesky vampires won't be having a suck tonight and I will still be enjoying eggs from the nest for breakfast tomorrow while wearing my oak tree lapel pin in the hope that some handsome spy comes knocking and if I am truly blessed he will bring David and his chocolate fountain with him.

message 3742: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) Earlier today, I finished reading The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches, #1) by Anne Rice by Anne Rice. The Witching Hour is an extremely long novel, 1207 pages, but don't let that put you off reading as once you open the first page you soon find yourself completely absorbed in the chilling tale of the Mayfair Witches. This novel has a spellbinding, engrossing, well-written tale with complex and mysterious characters. There are plenty of compelling twists and turns in the plot to keep you interested and the suspense is drawn out to perfection. The novel is completely unpredictable, I found the ending to be quite a shock! My full review can be found here.

Now, I'm about to start The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving by Washington Irving and Frankenstein (Penguin Classics) by Mary Shelley by Mary Shelley.

I read The Witching Hour on holiday when I was about 17 and loved it - unfortunately I got an old copy from the library and it fell apart while I was reading it.

I'm now reading Afraid by J Kilborn
