Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments finished The Dead Yard: A Story of Modern Jamaica

Started really well, but then just went around in circles. Will post short review on GR later this eve.

Not sure what's up next. Publishing my own novel next week, so maybe too busy with that to read much

message 3658: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Finished Dodger by Terry Pratchett
It's basically Dickens meets Shakespeare in Love. Only gave it 3 stars which, I think is the lowest score I've ever given a Pratchett. It's very much a vanity project and it shows. Sadly I think the man is losing his touch.

Unlike some authors though, he does have a pretty good excuse.

Edit - I think Himself has just finished this - must ask what he thought.

Wow Just finished Heavens Door by Grant James Turner. This is a must read book. Get it now or wait till the weekend it is free then, but get it! you will enjoy each and every page as the story unfolds to the final climax. I loved it!

message 3670: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) Earlier, I finished reading The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson by Shirley Jackson. I was disappointed by this book to be honest. I felt the novel did not live up to the reputation it has gotten. I just felt like it was missing something. Plus I disliked all the characters and the strange dialogue between them really annoyed me. This is one novel where the movie, or in this case movies, are better than the book. My full review is here.

Next I'm going to read The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches, #1) by Anne Rice by Anne Rice.

message 3671: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Have at last finished The Red House Mystery, a competent Agatha Christie-like story, with not a heffalump in sight. Also started but couldn't be bothered to finish Hilda Hopkins, Murder She Knit, nice idea but just not engaging enough. Not sure what I feel like reading next so am working my way through the samples I've accumulated.

I'm not up to much at the mo as I'm not feeling well, but am doing lots of kindle reading! I'm working through quite a bit of my TBR list though!

Read Whatever You Do, Don't Run: True Tales of a Botswana Safari Guide which made me laugh.

Read Another Alice: An Inspiring True Story Of A Young Woman's Battle To Overcome Rheumatoid Arthritis which made me cry.

Am just over half way through The Elephant Whisperer which is fascinating. All the above were bought in sales or daily deal offers. Money well spent!

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Started and finished This thirtysomething life: A Diary following Kath's recommendation. Loved it! Had some real laugh out loud moments and a wee cry as well.
Then read Buried a tense, claustrophobic thriller. Just a short but has tempted me to look at more of his work.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12622 comments Just started A Dish Best Served Cold and am enjoying it, along with some good music and a cat on my knee

The film of The Virgin Suicides is haunting as well. Although the book is better, of course.

Apocalypse Now is better than Conrad's "Heart Of Darkness" but may not count as a true film adaptation, more an interpretation.

message 3694: by Kath (new)

Excellent!

Matthew McFarland (matthewwmcfarland) | 46 comments Marc wrote: "Apocalypse Now is better than Conrad's "Heart Of Darkness" but may not count as a true film adaptation, more an interpretation. "

I'm sorry but I have to disagree! Whilst I love Apocalypse Now, Heart of Darkness is an absolute masterpiece. The opening scene on the Thames is a study in atmosphere, and the narrative within a narrative is used to such good effect. All the things which make Apocalypse Now such a good movie (suspense, fear, tension and the descent into madness) are all present in the book.

message 3699: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I have to admit I found Heart of Darkness almost unreadable. I read it for our village book group or i wouldn't have persisted. Maybe I'm a moron!
