Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1774 comments I'm on the indies again for a bit, just finished The Last Dragon Slayer (reviewed it on Amazon), and just started Bill The Vampire, which is jolly good fun so far!

message 10103: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Just finished An Orc Not Like Others and just started The Cartographer's Apprentice: Leave Them Wanting More.

These titles will be familiar to some of you...

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Will be reading more of both - such a relief to find fantasy with a lighter touch - in Jim's case, and originality in Darren's atypical orc hero.

Just started to read Glory Road again - years ago it was my favourite Heinlein book, not sure at the moment whether it has stood the test of time.

message 10105: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished Pamela Kelt's Half Life and Dark Interlude, which were excellent thrillers, and Is It Her, which for some reason I can't find to link! Grr. Anyway, will review shortly - it's been a good week for books!

David Hadley Just finished1356 1356 by Bernard Cornwell which was one of the better iterations of his formula.

Just started Not Dead Enough (Roy Grace, #3) by Peter James Not Dead Enough, which is the 3rd Roy Grace book. Thought the first two were pretty good, so here we are.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished The Disappearance by Annabel Kantaria. Good read.

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) Addicted to Dimes (Confessions of a Liar and a Cheat) by Catherine Townsend-Lyon Finished reading this recently. An very personal, honest and no holds barred memoir of the authors struggle with a gambling addiction. http://trbooks7.blogspot.com/2016/04/...

Now reading 'Walking over Eggshells' by Lucinda E Clark. Again this is a personal memoir which I am enjoying, not sure that is the right word as she does share the difficult times she endured. Lucinda is a very proficient writer that makes the read easy and rewarding. The system will not permit me to add an additional cover image but will let you know when I eventually finish it.

Jim | 21809 comments Just finished The Difference Engine

It's one I've been meaning to read for a while and was stuck in London for a couple of days so it seemed the obvious opportunity :-)
Recommended for readers and writers alike

David Hadley Just finished The Consuming Instinct: What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, Pornography, and Gift Giving Reveal About Human Nature The Consuming Instinct What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, Pornography, and Gift Giving Reveal About Human Nature by Gad Saad , which I found excellent, although some might not. It has some low reviews on GR apparently because the author has both the audacity to be a self-confessed atheist and to believe in evolution, of all things.

Just started An Ocean Of Air A Natural History Of The Atmosphere by Gabrielle Walker An Ocean Of Air: A Natural History Of The Atmosphere.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Finished Sleeping In Flame Sleeping In Flame by Jonathan Carroll . Still reading The Wild Hunt of Hagworthy.

message 10114: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments Dragonvein Dragonvein Dragonvein Just finished at 2 oclock this morning the third book in this series. Thought it was a trillogy but this is not the end! No idea when the next book will be out. I hate it when that happens. I was enjoying it very much and now it's cut off mid flow.

message 10115: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Is it one story separated into several books? it's weird they are all called the same thing.

message 10116: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished Country Of The Blind by Christopher Brookmyre, which was a good, solid crime thriller.

Just started SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard, which I'm really excited about!

message 10117: by Pam (last edited May 01, 2016 06:02AM) (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments (about the Dragonvein books) I saw some people grumping that the story was dragged out as well as unfinished, and could've been in one or two books.

message 10118: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments Yes, Jud it is an ongoing story, book1 book2 &book3. I don't read reviews, if I had I would have known there was more to come.

message 10119: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished a funny book - Missing Gretyl - You Only Love Twice by Si Page. Very British, rude humour which really brightened a grey April day or two.

That's one author I'll be sure to avoid. Thanks for letting us know, Pat.

I have no time for writers who rip off readers like that.

Must confess I think even books in a series should be capable of standing on their own without undue reliance upon the previous of subsequent book. By all means link but please do not disappoint or frustrate the reader by not providing some sort of completion.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I started The Girl with All the Gifts this morning.

Did one of you recommend it?

It's a great book. Dystopian sci-fi, I guess you'd call it. I'm really enjoying the shifting POV and the quality of writing.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Yes, I thought it was great

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments Wife has just finished Pure. Overall interesting and well written. She liked the descriptions of the smells but, like others, she struggled to fully immerse herself in the world and as such was left feeling a bit confused. Enjoyed it, but felt it jarred in places.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Just finished Dead Tomorrow just felt like the ending was rushed. Now starting An American Killing

Indeed he did.

Apparently, the author had a new book out last month. I may investigate.

David Hadley Just finished rereading Catch-22 Catch-22 by Joseph Heller , which I still liked a lt. Although, I reduced my rating from 5 to 4 stars for some reason I haven't quite put my finger on yet.

Just starting rereading The Stranger by Albert Camus The Stranger.

There were a few bits that had stuck in my mind too from reading it years ago too. It was nice coming across a fair few I'd forgotten too.

message 10138: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Not Dead Enough Not Dead Enough (Roy Grace, #3) by Peter James , which was a bit slow in the first half and a bit of an obvious twist in the second half that turned out not to be.

The Kingdom of Gods (Inheritance, #3) by N.K. Jemisin The Kingdom of Gods, the third book in the trilogy.

I've just got to the bit where they're walking through London and it's seriously freaked me out.

I hope I never get thrush again.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Whoaaaaa.

That was a great book.

I saw the ending coming but there's not many books where I don't.

I highly recommend it.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished a review for Netgalley - book due out on June 30th. Baby Doll Great book and very thought-provoking.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I hate it when publishers (and other reviewers) compare a book to one you may not necessarily have enjoyed so much. Let the reader decide!

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished a good first-book thriller by Stephen O'Rourke called The Crown Agent - no links yet as it flashed up on Amazon at the weekend and is now down again. A sort of John Buchan for 1829. I'll review it when it reappears. Also finished Bone of Contention, which wasn't as good as her previous ones but still fine. Still edging my way through The Silver Swan: jury still out on his crime novels, though I like some of his other stuff.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin

I've just posted my review for Cixin Liu's novel The Three-Body Problem, and it's an amazing read. Some of the best sci-fi I've read in a while:
