The Secrets of the Sea House sounds good - just been and bought it - will be interesting to compare with the wonderful Night Waking (one of my fave books this year)

I think he's usually pretty good - I've read worse, one that mentioned chipmunks in England of the same period! And no, I wouldn't trust myself to write anything American.

I'll take a look at Night Waking, now!

Provenance: How a Con Man and a Forger Rewrote the History of Modern Art
, the real-life story of how pathological liar John Drewe tinkered with the history of European Modern art in order to sell hundreds of forged paintings to collectors, galleries and museums. If you like con men, you'll love this book. Four stars.Read the full review here.
Now reading Roger Hobbs' Ghostman .
Just finished
.Hmmm. I don't know. I did like Reacher for a while, but now he is beginning to annoy me and I grow tired of formulaic thrillers.
However, I - at long last - found a copy of
, which I read years ago and thought was pretty good. I've been wanting to get a copy of it and re-read it ever since. Now I have so now I am.
The film version of it was terrible though. Don't judge the book by it.
Finally finished 21 Tales, which finishes my A-Z Challenge. As a treat, i'm reading a James Patterson book, one of his shorts (it starts at 7%), Bloody Valentine. Now finding books to start my 2014 challenge.
Just finished
Ghostman
, an entry in the growing genre of "fixer thrillers". A tidy, efficient crime thriller with stripped-down prose that goes by fast. The protagonist is largely charisma-free, however, and the twisty plot doesn't seem to challenge him the way it should. 3.5 stars rounded down.Read the full review here.
Now reading The Death and Life of Bobby Z and/or Black Karma , depending on my mood.
I've just finished Frostwalker which was a decent horror read:http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Finally got round to finishing Flaggermusmannen(the bat),was quite slow,i'm hoping that the next in the series is better.Started Scream: A Dci Mark Lapslie Investigation.
Just finished (yesterday but I've been away!) The Atholl Expedition Cracking!http://www.ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk...
Last night I finished Private Berlin - James Patterson and now will read Private Down Under: - James Patterson.
I've just finished reading First Strike, it's well written, but frustratingly just the first chapter of a longer work:http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Currently reading The Universe Versus Alex Woods. Wasn't sure at first, but it's growing on me and I like the narrator.
finished Oranges and Lemons: Rhymes from Past Times yesterday, which was very interesting!also finished a short poetry book by Henley - always enjoyable but included two of my least favourite parts of his work.
been reading Frankenstein for over a month now. probably 2 months... god its going slow. i love it, dont get me wrong, but i only pick it up for a few pages before i get overwhelmed
Patti (baconater) wrote: "I'm on a Stephen King kick. Just started rereading Lisey's Story"Glad to see it. I thought Lisey's Story was good stuff. Hope you enjoy!
Oh yes I'm enjoying it immensely. Thankfully, it's been ages since I read it the first time so it's almost like reading it for the first time again.
im over half way through The Princess Brideenjoying it but ignoring all italics and bits in brackets. no time for that crap
Finished Bloody Valentine, and decided to read some shorts until my 2014 challenge starts. First read THE TRUE UNSOLVED CRIMES COLLECTION: VOLUME 1, wasn't overly keen. Then started Beware Of The Cat: Weird Tales About Cats, quite enjoying this so far.
Having just finished the Tom Cox pussy cat Trilogy (Under the Paw: Confessions of a Cat Man, Talk to the Tail and The Good, The Bad and The Furry: Life with the World's Most Melancholy Cat and Other Whiskery Friends) although I did read them out of order, I am now starting another trilogy of sorts, the first 3 Inspector Morse books by Colin Dexter
Just finished (for the 2nd time)
. I was really looking forward to rereading this as I remember it being so good the first time around.
Now, though, I can't understand why I thought it was so good the 1st time. OK, but nothing special.
Now reading:
. Saw the telly series a bit back, then read Pillocks of the Earth & now this.
sometimes books are only good once because the originality is there and reading it for the first time is half the fun. i finished The Princess Bride last night. i really really really hated the commentary but thoroughly enjoyed the characters and plot.
i still prefer the movie though. its only one of two books that i can honestly say that about.
Finished Little Big Life by Dean Koontz, will hopefully finish Beware of the cat tomorrow, won't hit 50 books this year, but should do 45. Now need to find a non fiction or book of shorts in my pile of paperbacks
Last night I finished Private Down Under: - James Patterson and will carry on reading Under Different Stars - Amy A. Bartol.
I started Jim's slim volume this morning and I'm thoroughly enjoying it! The guy writes more than just great blog posts! The Cartographer's Apprentice: Leave Them Wanting More
http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Cartograp...
It's only 79p! Grab it!
Did I ever mention that Patti is a supremely intelligent and doubtless beautiful woman Thanks Patti
;-)
The Death and Life of Bobby Z
is the book that started Don Winslow on his “drugs in Laguna” series, which isn’t actually a series as much as an attitude and state of mind. The attitude and stock company are there; the plotting isn’t quite yet. Still, it’s well entertaining. Three and a half stars rounded down to three.Read the full review here.
Now moving on to Black Karma .
I recently finished The Humans and enjoyed the many clever observations of how crazy humans really are!

One of my friends writes in her review that the one reason the film is better is that it includes this scene;
Miracle Max: "Bye bye boys! Have fun storming the castle!"
Max's Wife: "You think it'll work?"
Miracle Max: "It'll take a miracle."
Both: "BYE!
I've just finished Cora Carmacks Finding It - a new adult novel which I thought was amazing & recommend to others :D I'm about to start The Dark Side of Truth by Gary Caruso which I'm really excited about as I loved his last book Our Souls to Keep!!!
Just finished Debbie McGowan's No Time Like The Present and thoroughly enjoy it. Give her work a try sometime. My review can be read at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/760443723.Started The Deserters: A Hidden History of World War II by Charles Glass.
Just finished Wolf Hall think iht will be a while before I start on the follow-up Bring Up the Bodies. Now reading The Rembrandt Secret by Alex Conner and am completely hooked. Can see me rushing through this series too

I read somewhere that Billy Crystal put lots of adlib one liners in when he was acting this, and they were so good that they kept most of them!

I've just finished reading The Final Curtsey which I found very interesting. Glimpse into a bygone era.
Now I'm readig Death Comes to Pemberley which I did try to read before but couldn't get in to. Now I am enjoying it.
Both of these also form part of my 2014 challenge to read books which have been stuck in my TBR list for over a year.

just finished The Rembrandt Secret, thoroughly enjoyed it & have bought the follow up book by the author. now reading DIVERGENT by Veronica Roth & hope it lives up to the hype
Just finished my third Bill Bryson, Notes from a Small Island. Found some of it very funny indeed. (My review)Just started the discretely titled God Hates You, Hate Him Back: Making Sense of The Bible by C.J. Werleman. Pretty mind-blowing for someone who was brought up fire-and-brimstone Christian. A solid five star so far at 28% through. I'm copying and pasting almost every word of it.
just finished
which was shockingly disappointing seeing as it's supposed to be the 'best of'. Only 2 worthwhile stories out of the collection, one from a long established author.Probably start tomorrow on
I've just finished Snow Crash which was an excellent cyberpunk thriller:http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...
I'm now onto The Inevitable, I love the idea this is based on.

I've added God Hates You, Hate Him Back to my to-read list Natasha. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. It sounds amusing.
I've just finished Death Comes to Pemberley and enjoyed it. This is my second attempt, I didn't get much further than the prologue the first time and didn't like it at all. Reapproached it with lower expectations and a different frame of mind, and really enjoyed it this time. I admired the style of writing, it did fit in well with Austen. The plot was clever and satisfying too. There was a little too much rehashing of the original P&P which wasn't necessary because even if not every one has read it most people have seen some film or tv adaptation. I think that it deserves more than the three stars which is it's average rating on amazon.
I started The Ocean at the End of the Lane this morning. Only read a few pages but can see that I will enjoy this, the writing is beautiful.
