I really can't stand Martin Amis. A man brought up with such privilege spends his entire literary life sneering at those not so well off as him

I've just finished it. Not as funny as some but far far deeper at the same time.

I've seen some suggestions that it's not, in fact, written by Sir Terry!!

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. Wow. ...

Just started The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, lesbian classic first published in 1952. This will be my first ever book club book.

Re ..."Kevin" - as brilliant as the portrayal of the mother was in really getting into every one of her emotions, I felt Kevin himself was utterly opaque and I couldn't buy into his portrayal at all. The argument that such a personality would be unreadable anyway I don't really accept. What did you think of him?

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Marc wrote: "What did you think of him?

Utter little shit. I really enjoyed how he was characterised. It was Franklin who got to me. I wanted to pick him up and shake him hard.

aw come on Patti, the book, the film, the kiddy colouring book... all been out for a fair while

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Well I've never seen/read/coloured it in

But it didn't appeal anyway and now I won't have to bother!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I haven't read it yet either. And I would maybe have read it at some stage, but now I don't need to.

message 6319: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I found it a deeply affecting book.

Still need to watch the film all the way through.

I don't do colouring in. I can't be doing with all those rules about lines.

message 6320: by Marc (new)

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments It's a brilliant book, but not perfect because of the portrayal of Kevin

MARC! Go and delete your spoiler! ;)

message 6323: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Thanks, Marc! Doesn't affect me of course, having read it a while back, but the 'twist' packed a punch with me.

Tilda Swinton was ace in the film, I thought. And I loved the style and colours of practically every shot.

It's a very interesting movie as it's consciously very arty but it works. It doesn't try to replicate the book in a dry way, but opens out some of its themes around the mother

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I've just finished Redemption Protocol, which was a fun sci-fi read:

I'm now onto Strange Magic so far is very dark :-)

Philip Whiteland | 3398 comments Just finished the latest DC Scott Cullen police procedural by Ed James, Dyed In The Wool. Probably his best yet. Just started Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by P.G. Wodehouse (his last full book) - now there's a contrast :-)

I watched the whole of We Need To Talk About Kevin--the movie--last night via YouTube. Part one here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxHdvs01QEA. Very well done. Shame it skirted around THE scene, though. ...

message 6331: by David (new)

David Hadley Finished The Help The Help by Kathryn Stockett last night. Excellent & highly recomended.

Started The Waste Lands The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, #3) by Stephen King .

I haven't read We Need To Talk About Kevin, yet. Nor seen the film. It is very rare for me to get around to anything until it has been around for ages.

There is still some Plato I haven't read yet too.

Michael (michaeldiack) | 180 comments Just finished A Dance with Dragons, gave it 1 star and a scathing review. About to start The Stand by Stephen King, another 1000 page behemoth of a book but already looking promising from the first few chapters and infinitely more exciting than GRRM's terrible, pathetic boring fantasy book.

message 6339: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Finished The Observations by Jane Harris and will try to get a review done - it was excellent. Started The Damned Die Hard by Hugh McLeavy, rather accidentally - it's a history of the French Foreign Legion. Also started When in Rome by Ngaio Marsh, a reread from years ago.

message 6340: by David (new)

David Hadley Finished reading Zen in the Art of Writing which was good and went on to Save the Cat! Goes to the Movies: The Screenwriter's Guide to Every Story Ever Told, which is the 2nd book in a series about structure in screenwriting, not that I intend writing a film, just that story structuring fascinates me.

I'm so envious of you getting to read The Stand for the first time.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) Just finished Hot Art: Chasing Thieves and Detectives Through the Secret World of Stolen Art by Joshua Knelman. Snappy writing and a cast of interviewees from both sides of the law make art theft come alive. 4.5 stars.

Hot Art Chasing Thieves and Detectives Through the Secret World of Stolen Art by Joshua Knelman

Now reading The Cold Dish (Walt Longmire, #1) by Craig Johnson and Provenance How a Con Man and a Forger Rewrote the History of Modern Art by Laney Salisbury .

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12625 comments I'm really struggling with my Letter V book, so decided to use my lend option on my Prime Trial to rent https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... instead.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I've just finished Strange Magic, which was fun and nice and dark, but could have been so much better:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

I'm now onto The Omega Paradox

message 6345: by Adele (new)

Adele (adelemitch) Just finished Sycamore Row very disappointed & no where near as good as A Time to Kill. Now torn between starting the new Terry Pratchett or new Ian Rankin. Still reading Wolf Hall and enjoying it immensely

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just started Swallowfields by Bev Carter. Actually I'm at 45% - it's excellent as usual with a nice build up of tension.

I've been wondering about trying Prime for a month - if the really expensive books on my wishlist can be borrowed. How do I find out which books are lend-able (?)

message 6349: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I think whether it's on prime shows on the book page.

Finally finished Doctor Sleep.

In that case it probably isn't worth even the free trial as none of the expensive books on my wishlist seem to be in the Lending library.
