Adele (adelemitch) Just finished Raising Steam, I really enjoyed it but I aM a Discworld geek AND live in Swindon (quite a theme in the book). Just started Saints of the Shadow Bible and I cannot put it down. Football aside today, this could be a one sitting book

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've been reading Shutter Island but the formatting of my copy is absolute crap.

It's even called Shudder Island.

Really good story though, so I might just struggle through with it.

message 6410: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I've just finished The Last Praetorian which was fun, but could have been better:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

I'm now onto Sunfall Manor which is off to an excellent start.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Thanks Jonathan, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

message 6413: by Sam (new)

Sam Kates Just finished Beyond 100 Drabbles by Jonathan Hill .

I'm not normally a huge fan of very short fiction, but since there are 120 drabbles packed into this volume there's plenty to get your reading teeth into. Perfect for dipping in and out of.

message 6415: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1774 comments I finished Earth Girl - not bad, hadn't realised I actually met the author back in September...

And I've just started The Painted Man by Peter V Brett, which doesn't seem to have a proper entry. Run of the mill adequate fantasy so far...

message 6416: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I've just finished Sunfall Manor which is a quick read, but a superb ghost story:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

I'm now onto Beyond 100 Drabbles

message 6423: by Lance (new)

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) Finished The Cold Dish , the novel that introduced Sheriff Walt Longmire to the world. A sure hand with the alpine Wyoming setting, an engaging leading man and a grade-A sidekick are undone by an out-of-character first-person narrative voice and a lack of dramatic seed corn to move me on to the next installment. A&E does it better on Longmire, showing us what could've been. Three stars and some change, rounded down.

The Cold Dish (Walt Longmire, #1) by Craig Johnson

Now reading Provenance: How a Con Man and a Forger Rewrote the History of Modern Art. Yes, more art crime.

Provenance How a Con Man and a Forger Rewrote the History of Modern Art by Laney Salisbury

message 6425: by Adele (new)

Adele (adelemitch) I have just finished Saints of the Shadow Bible, absolutely brilliant, I really hope that Ian Rankin continues with the Rebus series. Still plodding along with Wolf Hall but am now starting Stoner which seems to be the book of the moment.

Thanks Stuart. I hope I grow to like The Brothers Karamazov, it is pretty heavy going so far, though that isn't really a surprise. I see that Tollesbury Time Forever has become very popular on goodreads now.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12624 comments Finally finished my Blake Crouch book, now trying to finish my Estevan Vega book, hopefully I can finish my a-z challenge, but wont get my number of books read.

message 6429: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I've just finished reading Nightmare Escapade: A Horror Anthology, which was fun, but could have done with more development:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

I'm now onto The Boy Who Kissed The Sky

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments Well I have just read The New Year's Masquerade - Elise Marion which was another romantic story that I've loved.

message 6431: by Karon (new)

Karon | 41 comments I've been away for a few days so had quite a bit of reading time while on the Eurostar.
I finished Capital which I quite enjoyed. It was quite intriguing as to where all the familys linked together. I then tackled my pile of older books on my Kobo and read Casino Royale. I was quite surprised at how very close the film was to the book.
I'm now reading City of Lost Souls to finish off the series.

message 6437: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Save the Cat! Goes to the Movies: The Screenwriter's Guide to Every Story Ever Told, the follow up to Save the Cat!: The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need. Not as fascinating as the first one, this one applies Snyder's story structure to a heap of films and how a good structure can make a story work.

I would definitely recommend the first one to anyone who has problems with plot and structure in their writing, even though these books are meant for screenwriters, story is story, and so us fiction-wallahs can learn a lot from his method.

message 6438: by Adele (new)

Adele (adelemitch) Just finished Stoner, which is thoroughly deserving of all the recognition it is currently getting, now on to This Town: Two Parties and a Funeral — plus plenty of valet parking! — in America’s Gilded Capital

message 6439: by Mark (new)

Mark Faulkner (markrfaulkner) | 464 comments I've not posted in ages, but have been reading plenty. Think I'll have to put them up in bulk. Read The Turtle Boy which was OK but didn't live up to the hype: a bit disappointing. Then onto The Kite Runner which I have to give five stars to although I think it's the most depressing book I've ever read, mainly because I didn't like the main character. Then onto The Violin of Auschwitz - four stars. Then I just read the three books of Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar Saga back to back. Thoroughly absorbing and have been good for nothing else while reading them.
Not sure what to read next, must try to get my life back in order first.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished Divorcing Jack by Colin Bateman. Fun crime comedy.

Just started Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson. Popular eating disorder fiction.

message 6442: by [deleted user] (new)

I've got several things on the go at the mo, which I keep switching between.

Off the KUF Volume 1: Short fiction from the Kindle Users Forum, The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales (which is still free by the way and has Arthur Rackham's beautiful illustrations.) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grimms-Fairy-...

And The Princess Bride which I bought when it was on promotion. I've read it once before years ago, and was disappointed in it, so decided to give it another go. Whilst I can appreciate it - I do still prefer the film! About the only time I think when I have ever preferred a film to a book! Maybe it's because William Goldman is such a good screen writer. Anyway, I'm about half way through and struggling with it...

I loved Bateman's Mystery Man - not read Divorcing Jack yet but I've got another Bateman buried on the kindle somewhere - it'd make a welcome change from Finders Keepers

I was recommended Colin Bateman because I loved Quite Ugly One Morning by Christopher Brookmyre. I did enjoy the Bateman, but it didn't match the Brookmyre.

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Haven't read Quite Ugly One Morning either. So the TBR pile is expanding again!

message 6446: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments I finished A Country Kitchen Christmas - Leanne Tyler in the early hours of the morning.

message 6447: by David (new)

David Hadley Finished The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks (again)- damn good.

Finished The Pale Horseman (The Saxon Stories, #2) by Bernard Cornwell (possibly again) - I dunno Cornwell gives good tale, but I'm getting too used to his formula, I think.

Started and finished The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett , they were raving about this on R4's Good Reads prog recently, and being Alan Bennett I thought it sounded great, It was good, I suppose, but not as great as I'd expected.

Started This Perfect Day by Ira Levin - one of the few Levin books I've never read. It is quite old 70s era, but looks interesting. I tend to like his books, which are - of course - better than the films, even though the films of his books are often quite good.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments It was a very serious rave, though, on Good Reads, and anything might be a bit of a let-down after it! Though I confess it reminded me that I wanted to read it.
