Lance Charnes (lcharnes) Just started The Boy in the Suitcase . Scandinoir about child trafficking in Denmark. I don't think it's a comedy.

I enjoyed Alison Wonderland, it's quite whacky

Is that because of all the Danish children that have perished in the LEGO mines over the years?

Victoria (daisyduck) wrote: "That's a TERRIBLE title for Richard Wilde! Ugh. "

Yeah, and they've renamed Imperfect Tense as "When I was Young" (makes it sound like a Winnie the Pooh book!) Honestly! *sigh*

:0/

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Finished the delightfulAlison Wonderland - hope there'll be another - and now, completely different, starting a dark/chilling Scandinavian crime, Three Seconds

message 5009: by [deleted user] (new)

I've read a few mediocre free romances lately, but now I've started something that I can get my teeth into - the latest Murray of Letho! Fellowship with Demons. I've only just started it but enjoying the good writing. It picks up themes from the last novel, so I've been wracking my brains to remember what happened last - good idea to quickly scan the ending of the last book, An Abandoned Woman to refresh the memory.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished My Fat, Mad Teenage Diary by Rae Earl. (My five-star review)

Just started The Troll Trap by Rosen Trevithick and The Dream of a Ridiculous Man (short story) by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

message 5011: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I read a few over the weekend Lord Edgware Dies, Murder on the Orient Express,Why Didn't They Ask Evans? and Sea Dog Bamse.

I loved the Bamse story and I may have to go for a wee walk to see the statue and the grave next time I am in Montrose

message 5012: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished Hilary Mantel's Bring Up the Bodies (looking forward to the next one but need something a bit light-hearted now!). Just started The Wayward Apprentice by Jason Vail - a bit earlier in history and definitely lighter.

Why Didn't They Ask Evans? is one of my favourite Christies!

message 5013: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Can't wait for my next holiday to read loads more on the flight. Although I may be too excited to concentrate on a book for very long

Lorraine | 575 comments Yesyerday i finished Midwinter of the Spirit, awful,if someone was to ask what the story was about,i would have to say that i don't think there was a story, have got all the other merrily watkins books but after this one i think i might be giving them a wide birth. To get back on track i'm half way through The Death Sculptorand it's brilliant. As i knew it would be.

message 5015: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments I started reading The Serpent in the Glass (The Tale of Thomas Farrell, #1) by D.M. Andrews . It's very exciting :D

message 5016: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I loved that book Joo. I know people have made Potter comparisons but apart from a school for magic I didn't see it myself. It also predated Potter, I believe.

message 5017: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments I've never read Potter and not really cared for the films, so it's all good to me

her next one is also very good. A bit different as it's set in a near future dystopia, but it's full of warmth

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments Just finished "Fiction Burns" by Steven Harris which doesn't appear to be listed on GoodReads.

Still ploughing my way through the early pages of Umbrella by Will Self the lack of paragraphs making it a bit of a struggle, but there again it is stream of consciousness...

I think Will Self is a hoot, but have never bothered to read anything he's written

message 5024: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I've just finished Battle for Earth (The Star Chronicles, #1) by Rod Porter , it's an exciting military sci-fi, with a few flaws.

Next I'm onto Friend Request by David Wailing

I'm in the middle of a couple of books which I hope to finish shortly.

I do really like hi short stories, but have struggled with every one of his novels except "the Book Of Dave" which just wasn't very good.

message 5027: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Penny Kilkenny Saves The Day by Darren Humphries and The Only Genuine Jones by Alex Roddie. Both totally different but both five star reads. Reviews on my blog.

I also finished a last read through of Andy Barrett's new book Black By Rose last night - due for publication in Sunday evening if all goes to plan. This is absolutely bazonkingly good.

message 5028: by [deleted user] (new)

I've just finished Copy which was very good. Now I'm going to read Friend Request which is the last book for me to read in the auto series - not the last book, that's Copy, but the last one for me to read, read them out of order!

I'm reading short stories at the mo as I am busy crocheting and it is easier to pick those up. I was really enjoying Fellowship with Demons but can't do justice to it at the mo - will pick it up again when we go on holiday next week!

:0)

I'm reading the Auto series in a random order as well :-)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Working my way through Three Seconds but think I'll abandon it. It's really not gripping me, don't care about the characters. Am keen to start on another of our May reads.

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments Just finished Marvel Comics: The Untold Story which was good but I'm not really sure what I'm in the mood to read next so I've gone back to Sherlock Holmes for the time being.

I'm well into our Michael Cargill's Underneath

message 5041: by Lance (new)

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) Just finished The Boy in the Suitcase. It's yet another entry in the growing catalog of Scandinoir coming to these shores, and in many ways fits the general pattern: a socially maladapted protagonist, evil doings involving underage victims, societal rot, Eastern European villains, heat waves. That its central figure isn’t a police detective doesn’t move it very far out of the middle of this particular stream.

My review is at http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....

The Boy in the Suitcase (Nina Borg, #1) by Lene Kaaberbøl

Now starting The Ragnarök Conspiracy , a political thriller.

message 5042: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I've just finished Friend Request and I can highly recommend it:

I'm now onto Seance of the Souls

I've finished reading two enjoyable and escapist short stories this morning - Dd's Claire and the haircut of Doom, and Two Penny Blue, both of which I enjoyed very much.

Will look for more short stories to read next, I'm enjoying a run of these at the mo.

message 5044: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Karen, have you tried Ray Kingfisher's Tales of Loss and Guilt - I'm part way through it at the moment and I can really recommend it.

Also, Jonathan Hill's hot-off-the - whatever passes for a press in ebook terms - Beyond Eclectic. I finished this last night - I think it's excellent - some are Wow stories. I'm reviewing it later today.

Good suggestions, thanks. I haven't read the first Eclectic book yet, or letter to Maureen. I do have the Ray Kingfisher short stories so I'll have a look at those too. Too many sweeties in the shop....

Stu's book is very different - I loved it though.
