Michael Brookes (technohippy) Devil Inside by Brandy Isaacs

I've just finished Brandy Isaacs' book 'Devil Inside', quite a good vampire story:

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments I've finished The Morganville Vampires Book Nine: Ghost Town - Rachel Caine. Now I am going to read The Morganville Vampires Book Ten: Bite Club - Rachel Caine.

Sounds good to me. Just bought it - hope to share it with daughter as she's just back from Thailand and Still doing up their cottage.

Just finished Exiles - it was ok, but not much feel for the Auvergne region other than a few French words tossed in. I've now started The Welsh Girl which so far is brilliant.

I've got several books on the go at once now! I'm dipping in and out of Patrick Moore's Patrick Moore: The Autobiography which is very well written.

I also read Austenland which was a daily deal, it was ok but not quite what I was expecting, bit cynical.

I've just finished reading Old Before My Time: Hayley Okines' Life with Progeria which was inspirational. Hayley has a disease called progeria which means she ages eight times faster than normal so although now only 13 she has the body of a 90 year old. This book isn't depressing though, her parents decided that even if her life is going to be short they were going to fill it with as much love and amazing experiences as possible. Instead of being depressing, this is a positive read.

Tim | 8539 comments Just finished Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman (Audible version, brilliantly narrated by Lenny Henry)

Fat Charlie doesn't know he has a brother, not until his father dies (in the middle of the dance floor on karaoke night). Then he finds out that not only was his father the god Anansi, but his hitherto unknown brother, Spider, inherited all the goddy bits. And then Fat Charlie invites Spider to come and stay. Oops.

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Just finished A Novel Way to Die, a cosy murder mystery (http://jhillwriter.blogspot.co.uk/201...)
and
Crowley's Rival, a gripping and brilliantly written short story (http://jhillwriter.blogspot.co.uk/201...)

message 4910: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I haven't read A Novel Way to Die but I so agree with you about Crowley's Rival.

message 4911: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I finished Breverton's Nautical Curiosities during the week. A rather long dipper book but very worth it. The last chapter or two wasn't to my interest but still good

Not heard of 'a couple of books'. Who wrote that one then? ;)

Haha! Get back in the knife drawer - you'll cut someone! ;)

Just reviewed Lisa Hinsley's Coping? (Part 1). It's about her diagnosis last year - at the age of 40 - of bowel cancer. Very down to earth and heartening.

Got another but need to put the review up - back soon!

what did you think of Room?

message 4920: by TonyQ (new)

TonyQ (tonytheq) | 175 comments I have a feeling I have either read it before or a similar story just from the childish language and I think 'Old Nick' had popped up somewhere before. I enjoyed it though, good story once you got used to the language. (I even started talking like it now and then!)

message 4921: by Jane (new)

Jane (beetlejane) | 82 comments I have just finished The Dragon Keeper which I enjoyed for most of it, but in two minds whether to continue the series or not. Next up is The Crucifix Killer

I just felt as good as it was, the voice of a 5 year old child doesn't really sustain a work of literature? The words may have been appropriate, but the sophistication of the ideas behind them didn't work?

message 4923: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I didn't find it convincing as the words of a five year old child though - and I've had 2 of those.

Love Chris Carter, the crucifix killer is excellant,as are the rest in the series, not for the faint hearted though.

I thought the words were right, but didn';t believe the weight they had to carry would be held by a 5 year old. I've had 2 as well!

E A M Harris | 42 comments Just finished a fantasy: The Fourth Tribe by Alan Matthews. Good plot – keeps the suspense up. The world is well thought out but not hugely different from the sleazier parts of ours.

message 4929: by M.A. (new)

M.A. Comley (melcom) I've just started a DTB by Lisa Ballantyne The Guilty One by Lisa Ballantyne it's a bit slow to get into, very wordy for my tastes. Determined to see it through though.

message 4930: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Song of the Jikhoshi by Katie W Stewart. It's the sequel to Treespeaker and you need the background from that. I love them both - brilliant stuff. Don't let YA put you off. :)

message 4931: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I finished My Mother Wore a Yellow Dress I enjoyed it but I think largely due to being from Ireland myself, I don't think I would recommend it to anyone.

Going to start Richard Wilde next

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12623 comments Finally finished Ash - took me 4 attempts to read the last 4%. I quite enjoyed it, although I can understand the negativity. Now reading Nursing Home by Ira Eaton, as part of my A-Z challenge

Just about to start A Novel Way to Die by Lynda Wilcox

message 4936: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm still reading several things at once! Dipping in and out of The 2-Day Diet: Diet Two Days a Week. Eat Normally for Five., started Aegean Dream and also started a regency romance Runaway Heart which was so dire that I dropped it like a hot cake and returned to the master (mistress), Georgette Heyer, Venetia. I can't seem to settle to read anything straight through at the mo so am swapping about as the mood takes me.

message 4937: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished a little book of 3 short stories - Lemon and Lace - nice and well written but a little bland for a horror fan!

Also Matchbox Memories by Ray Kingfisher - excellent stuff this!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12623 comments 20% into Nursing Home, I'm rather confused, as it seems to read more like a factual book, and slightly dull.

message 4940: by Richard (last edited Apr 25, 2013 06:49PM) (new)

Richard Coady | 28 comments Just finished Under the Greenwood Tree. I love Thomas Hardy. Out of the half dozen or so books of his that I've read, this is the one with the weakest plot - (view spoiler) - but that doesn't make it any less of a joy to read. It's gentle and, in places, funny. But it's the sheer quality of Hardy's prose that I love. It's like floating in a swimming pool full of double cream.

Just started Life of Pi.

message 4941: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments I finished The Loyal Servant by Eva Hudson yesterday. It was a decent enough read - a political thriller. I'd recommend it.
Now I am reading Clovenhoof by Heide Goody . Satan is sacked and sent to live in Birmingham. Very enjoyable and funny.

message 4942: by Marc (new)

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments just finished Trawl by B.S. Johnson

Will start Umbrella by Will Self

message 4943: by Nigel (new)

Nigel Bird (nigelbird) | 167 comments I read The Outsiders earlier this year. Now I'm involved with Rumble Fish (the film of which really made and impact on me when I first saw it and on many occasions since) and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. SE Hinton has a wonderful style (not always perfect, perhaps) and I'm very surprised to find how much of the film's dialogue is taken straight from the page. Impressive.

message 4944: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Finished the delightfully written The Welsh Girl and now am really enjoying/have almost finished Christobel Kent's 'A time for Mourning', the first in the Sandro Cellini series, set in Florence, which confusingly seems now to be called The Drowning River: A Mystery in Florence - unfortunately it's a DTB as not available for kindle, unlike the later ones in the series. It's on a par with the early Donna Leon books. Great stuff.

message 4945: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Finished Flux by Mark R Faulkner. Contemporary horror. Meh. Didn't enjoy it - really not my "thing". Not rated.

Finished Touching Darkness by Scott Westerfeld. Book 2 of 3. Continues the YA saga of a bunch of peeps who live an extra hour at midnight. The darklings go on the offensive... Much better than the first one. Still not keen on 1st person viewpoint though. ★★★★

Finished Six Years Left by Courtenay Hereward We all know this kids short story by a talented 11 year old. Makes me want to find out more about the Caspian Seals. ★★★★

Started Wool by Hugh Howey The self-pub-to-big-six success story of the moment. Does it live up to the hype?

message 4946: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I loved Flux. One of my early discoveries from this group.

message 4947: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I'm not suggesting it was badly written; it wasn't. But rather like The Wasp Factory, it was something I didn't enjoy reading and wouldn't read again.
