R3 TEAM THREAD: Team #2 ~ Double Trouble [FIRST PLACE]

Eat Prey Love (Love at Stake, #9)
by Kerrelyn Sparks

I know! :D The only reason I picked so fast was the fact that Pride Mates -- along with Stormwalker (read earlier this season) -- is worth 30 points in the Seasonal Reading challenge (read two books, same author but different pen names - Jennifer Ashley=Allyson James).
So many choices.

Thanks, though, it really wasn't planned out that way, originally. ;-) I had intended to read one of her Ashley Gardner historical mysteries. But the Connect 4 game finished so quickly and Bingo started up sooner than I thought it would -- I wasn't sure I could squeeze it in before the end of this month. I'd all but given up on that task.
I'm more than half way through Pride Mates, so I'll be looking for something to read while waiting for the next shelf -- I think I read the Gardner book. :D

I have some GR friends who were peer pressuring me into trying some historical romance. They know I'm not a big PNR fan, but they urged, nonetheless. And I guess I like romances of the historical variety better than I like those of the paranormal variety. Or at least this one. :)
There was angst & misunderstandings, but they were real, not silly plot devices to create drama. Not that the characters weren't stupid, but it was understandable--they had been hurt, and the best of us create walls of self-preservation and protection. It's easy to say they should have just talked, but it's not a rarity for a relationship to crumble from lack of conversation.
The characters were both likeable, and both smart--at least in their day to day lives, if not in their relationship. Leo might have been just a bit too likeable; the man was near perfect.
And I really enjoyed Sherry Thomas' writing style, not overly flowery and romantic, but the woman packs quite a punch with her prose. I'm looking forward to reading more of her stuff.

So I'd like to thank that one awesome person, because I'm pretty sure there are no shifters in the book. I think they just did it based on the cover pic, but oh well, Bingo rules say it just has to be shelved there, even if it doesn't belong. Lol.

Oh, fine...so now it's just me left. ;)
Fixed! :)

YAY, stamp!!

Janet's racing over the highways and encounters a sinkhole...and not in a good way...within the first 5 pages! The action starts quickly and furiously in this book and moves to an exciting and satisfying end. Before getting to that end though, an inspector tries to shut down her hotel, her grandmother comes for a visit, her half-sister shows up with her own twisted agenda and someone tries to steal Mick from Janet~seriously not a good idea. Bad couple of days for Janet! It was fun, never boring or slow, and I can't wait for the next one!

Thank you kindly, darlin'. ;)

My favorite of the series I think. Lot's going on in this one. Nice setup for Sin's book.

I had a really hard time with this one. I wanted to like it, I've been looking forward to reading it, and I loved the cover, but it just didn't measure up for me.
First of all, the blurb is pretty misleading. It leads you to believe that you'll be reading about the demon children, and I guess you are, but in a roundabout, convoluted way--it's written in 1st person from the POV of a shapeshifting demon hunter, who has all the personality of a macadamia nut. It is all "must kill all demon children...they are evil evil evil". It got old.
Anyway, she and her fellow shapeshifting, demon hunting hubby find a dead body of a man with demon blood. They proceed to clean the skull and carry it around with them, because it allows the woman (who's name we never learn) to access all the memories of this dead demon child. That way, they can see if he knew others like himself, and they can hunt them down. Said dead demon child/owner of scrubbed-clean skull and his girlfriend are the people mentioned in the blurb. So you get a third person account of their story, told through the memories the demon hunter chick pulls from his skull, but I guess we know he dies, huh? Downer.
Also, this book was extremely slow moving. It took me 5 days to read a 256 page book. Yikes. And I fell asleep almost every time I was reading it. Double yikes. The beginning was slow and a bit confusing, and it picked up slightly after Rachel & Jona (demon children mentioned above) are introduced, but still, it just never grabbed me. I hate when finishing a book becomes a chore. Takes all of the joy out of it.
So if you're a fan of "beautiful prose", you'll probably love this this book. It read very much like "literature" for me. I actually feel like I'm admitting to being a dumbass by giving it 2 stars--if I were a real lover of the written word, I would love this book and it's artfulness. But I guess I'm just an average ole reader--I need fleshed out characters and a bit of action, thankyouverymuch.

ROFL! I love your review, especially the "macadamia nut"! Too bad it was such a bum book!

Laura has to read her Free Space book first. :D
I will post my Shifter review later (maybe grab some dinner first).

I chose this book because I'm attempting to get caught up with the series.
I loved the fact that both Mercy and Riley were Changelings, the first book where neither party is Psy (or, in Talin's case, part-Psy). I loved watching them try to figure out their relationship and how that will affect their standings in their respective packs
I liked Mercy. She's a Sentinel, but she isn't adverse to being mated and having children. She's afraid that her dominant leopard will prevent her from accepting the mating bond. Now that Lucas and all the male Sentinels are mated, Mercy's hard pressed to find a dominant male in the DarkRiver pack that can take her on. She'll have to look elsewhere -- or given into the temptation that is SnowDancer lieutenant Riley Kincaid.
Riley is the strong, silent type. He's the calm, level-headed one, which is why Hawke made him the liaison to DarkRiver in the first place. He still suffers guilt for not being able to protect his baby sister Brenna, who he raised from near infancy after the death of their parents. Riley's first instinct is to protect, something that Mercy baulks at -- she's fully capable of taking care of herself.
There are a lot of other things going on in the book -- stuff that deals with the on-going plots concerning the Psy Council, the Human Alliance, and the Ghost. Plus, we get a bit more about Hawke and the situation with Sienna, and Sascha gets two very different surprises.
