Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin, #1) by G.A. Aiken

Title/Author: Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken
Series: Dragon Kin
Read: 1/2/12
Rating: ★★★★✩
To-be-continued: Yes, Love those hawt dragons!

Review: OK I admit it... I was so excited to start this book and the dragon challenge and didn't pay attention to the start date, so this was my dragon "pre-read". This was actually two stories. The first one with Fearghus a large black dragon and Annwyl a human female warrior that he saved. He helps buid her strength and fighting skills so she can battle her brother while he's falling for her. The second was a short story about Fearghus' mother and father's courtship and the challenge they face against the Queen. There is a balance of PNR type danger and humor, the dragons are quite passionate in their human form and the steam level is pretty high. Since there are so many dragon siblings, I expect to see lots of fun hook-ups in the series to come.

Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne

Title/Author: Hounded by Kevin Hearne
Series: Iron Druid Chronicles
Read: 3/2/12
Rating: ★★★✩✩
To-be-continued: Yes

Review: This was a very light and quick read, that had me laugh quite a few times, often because of Oberon, the talking dog. The story was fast paced and action packed, with a host of quirky, wicked and interesting characters.
My main misgivings were with the main character, Atticus, a 2000 year old druid. He just wasn't that believable as an old and one would assume, wise, druid. Instead he acted more like the 21 year old, he pretends to be.
All up, it was still quite enjoyable and I would recommend it, if you look for something light and funny.

Devil Without a Cause (The Devil's Bargain #1) by Terri Garey

Title/Author: Devil Without a Cause by Terri Garey
Series: The Devil's Bargain
Read: 2/3
Rating: ★★✩✩✩
To-be-continued: No

Review: I was very disappointed with the book. Don't know why I thought it would be better. I didn't see anything special or extraordinary with the plot, character, or anything else. I wanted to like it more but I didn’t. While reading, I can’t help but compare this series to the J.R. Ward’s The Fallen Angels, not even close. I think the concept behind it was same different good VS bad -- bargain with the devil VS save by the angels. Characters were just so..so. I didn’t really like any of them. IMO, the story was too short so the characters didn’t have a chance to develop into anything they were supposed to be. It was like two parallel stories/worlds going on at the same time, which was fine, I’ve seen that before. But at the end, it was almost inconclusive, unfinished business. I know that this is a book one, and Sammy Divine’s story was supposed to be the main event but again Faith and Finn’s story was….abruptly done.
I will probably not going to read the next book just because there are so many better books out there to read.

I liked Rachel Caine's writing a lot more in this book. And the characters were good. It sometimes felt like I was reading a middle grade book than a young adult book, though. And the cliffhanger ending, ehh. But the book had some major good moments that I really enjoyed

Review: This was the first book I've read by this author and I really liked it. Just the right amount of paranormal elements, suspense, mystery, romance, and humor. I particularly liked Doc, the talking parrot. This is a sweet romance that is super funny. Steven is a Argentinian native who grew up in Germany and vacationed in Boston so his English is screwy and his accent is devine. And we cannot forget M.J.'s parrot Doc. He is the funniest pet I've heard about in months. His one-liners are spot on and hysterical. A wonderful start to A Ghost Hunter Mystery series.

Review: Juliette has been deprived of human contact for 264 days when another person is suddenly put into her cell. This book tells the story of how she dealt with that experience, learned more about the facility in which she's been held, and what the facility's overseer has planned for her.

This author's unique writing style turns many people off, but I found it to be interesting. (At least I did once I was able to sedate my OCDemoness.) There were similarities between this character's story and that of Alison in Ultraviolet, strictly because of the two characters' fear of their "abilities", the problems and shunning they have caused them while growing up, and their eventual realization that they are not alone. (I may have only made that connection because I read those two books within a week of each other.)

[My full review can be read here.]

Title/Author: Chosen by Blood by Virna DePaul
Series: Para-Ops
Read: 08 Jan
Rating: ★★★★✩½
First time author? Yes
To-Be-Continued? Yes
Review: The FBI has decided to create a Para-Ops team that will consist of humans and "otherborn" who are "humanlike creatures with superhuman DNA"; basically vamps, shifters, wraiths (very cool!), and a psychic. Together they go on missions as assigned by the FBI.

I really enjoy stories that incorporate paranormals into government agencies. So, this series was a perfect choice for me. I found all of the characters to be interesting, even those considered to be side-characters. Virna did a great job writing a story that was action-packed, but also allowed us to really get to know the main couple in the book. The series is a PNR, so each book focuses on a different member of the Para-Ops team. I liked it so much that I jumped right into the following books and read #0.5 - #3 in six days. I'm anxious for #4 ... no info on it, but I hope the series isn't close to ending.

Darkness Dawns (Immortal Guardians, #1) by Dianne Duvall

Title/Author: Darkness Dawns by Dianne Duvall
Series: Immortal Guardians
Read: 01 Feb
Rating: ★★★★✩
First time author? Yes
To-Be-Continued? Yes
Review: Sarah, a teacher, rescues a wounded man who turns out to be an immortal. He's 900+ yrs old and his job, as an Immortal Guardian, is to protect humankind from Vampires. Both Immortals and Vampires were bitten and "exposed" to a virus, but some become Immortals (good; guardians; extra abilities while human; less dependent on blood; do not kill humans) and some become Vampires (bad; drink/eat only blood; kill humans; go mad eventually).

I really enjoyed the world that Dianne created with this book. I liked the pairing of Sarah and Roland; they were very cute together. I also liked that Sarah could hold her own and kick some ass when necessary. She was a little more initially accepting of things (Immortals and Vamps) than I would've expected, but otherwise I liked it. Looking forward to starting #2 soon.

Review: The story has definite potential (love a good prophecy), and the world building is very good. The characters are also well-developed and interesting. There are some formatting and spelling issues that detract from the flow of the writing and events progress too quickly with little development in some places. The book ends on a partial cliffhanger and I look forward to seeing what happens next.

★★★½✩ I was really enjoying this first in the Dragonfire series; loved the characters (and there were a lot!), loved the plot, and this made it for a fast page-turning read.

Then. Things. Changed.

I felt the author played a little fast & loose with the abilities and magic of the characters and world. She didn't have her “rules” firm enough, IMHO. Why didn't a character used that ability earlier? (Which happened more than once!)

Series: Dragonfire

Review: This had a promising start but fizzled some where mid-read. The loving couple meet, sparks fly literally. He goes all Alpha male to cherish and protect, yadda yadda. Then he leaves her vulnerable for stupid reasons more than once throughout the book. Its not like our heroine was a tough girl that could take care of herself in a fight, she's an accountant. Things fell into place too easily and parts at times, then just didn't line up and jive in the end. Maybe this was first book mistakes and the series tightens up on "dragonfire" universe rules a little better as the series progresses. If anyone knows if it gets better, please let me know.

Devil Without a Cause (The Devil's Bargain #1) by Terri Garey

Title/Author: Devil Without a Cause by Terri Garey
Series: The Devil's Bargain
Read: 1 March
Rating: ★★★✩✩½
First time author? No
To-Be-Continued? Yes
Review: Devil Without a Cause introduces us to Finn Payne, a rock star who's success is due to a ring and a deal with the Devil; Faith McFarland, a single mother who is caring for her son, who has a brain tumor; and reintroduces fans of Terri's Nicki Styx series with the Devil himself, Samael, the Fallen (AKA: His Satanic Majesty, Son of Morning, Prince of Darkness, Lord of the Underworld, etc, etc, etc). The lives of these three collide when Gabrielle comes to Sam(my B. Divine) with "a chance for redemption. A chance to show the One that {he} regrets {his} disobedience, that {he} still wants forgiveness." He's still sore over the whole Eve (Lilith) fiasco.

The offer, made by Gabrielle, is to help a mortal woman (Faith) who needs guidance. Sammy takes him up on the offer, but twists it to fit his agenda, no surprise there - he is the Father of Lies, after all. He decides to kill two birds with one stone. See, Sammy desperately wants Finn's ring back. Finn hasn't succumb to the pressures of the Ring of Chaos, as the wearers before him have, and has instead survived 20 years. Sammy will get Finn's soul once he loses the ring, but Sammy cannot take it from him. He also sees this "chance" as an opportunity to gather another soul - again, why not? So, he offers to save Faith's son, cure his cancer, if she seduces Finn, steals the ring, brings it him and he gets her soul when she dies. What would you do to save the life of your son? What about the life of the man you think you might love? The despicable idea of seducing a man and spending eternity in Hell present challenges for Faith, but things get confusing for her when Finn does whatever necessary to stop her from handing over his ring.

★★★★✩ (This is a review of the audiobook.) Who knew Barbara Rosenblat had so many funny voices? There is a “Newfie” in this book that she anthropomorphizes with a hilarious “woe is me” tone in his voice – oh, excuse me, a Newfoundland, as Jim prefers to be called! This first in the Aisling Grey, Guardian series is a hoot! Ms. Rosenblat sounds completely different than she does in the Amelia Peabody Mysteries.

Still, I enjoyed this book more than I should have and laughed at all the silly set-up scenarios that contribute to all of Abaddon and the Paris Otherworld chasing after Aisling. Of course, maybe this is worth squabbling over: (view spoiler)

I have no idea if Ms. Rosenblat’s French and Hungarian accents are spot-on or not, but I loved listening to them, both male or female. I’ll definitely continue with the series on audiobooks. . . (view spoiler)

Review:

So a YA book and I've given it 5 stars, that's just plain unheard of.

Gwen Frost, a 17 yr old Gypsy is sent to the Mythos Academy following the death of her mother. The Mythos Academy is a little different. Every pupil is either a Spartan, Valkyrie, Amazon or other amazing warrior type, except for Gwen. Weapons training is mandatory and of course, Gwen sucks at that.

The reason for the Mythos Academy is to train up the new young warriors that must defeat the Reapers, servants of the God Loki, the God of Chaos. All the other Gods & Goddesses banded together and led by Nike, defeated Loki in times past. But he has been working on escaping from his prison and uses the Reapers to that end.

Don't want to say too much or it'll give it all away, but I seriously really, really enjoyed this book. Maybe because I always enjoyed Clash of the Titans which JE said inspired her to write this series.

Review:

A light fluffy read with a reasonably predictable ending. A Scifi romance with added shapeshifters.

Our h, Callie Jordan, grew up in an orphanage and put herself through college, she works at a zoo and is desperate to work with the big cats but is stuck in the petting zoo.

Our H, Prince Rogar from a planet called New Symtaria shifts into a black jaguar, and has been searching for the descendants that emigrated from Old Symtaria in the past. You guessed it, Callie is one of those descendants, and spends a fair proportion of the book denying that, then choosing not to return, even though her life is at stake. Because, of course, there is a crazy who doesn't believe in mixed bloods.

Interesting story but not rushing to read the next one, even though I have it.

Review:
This book took forever to get interesting. I almost put it down in disgust...twice. Though I'm glad I persevered since it turned out to be a good story though it got rather boring with all the boxing training first with Tommy and then with Loup. As a rule I don't enjoy dystopian novels but this one was ok eventually once the action kicked up a notch.

There was some kind of virus that originated in Mexico and everyone who could fled across the border into Texas. The US military built a 50 square mile wall surrounding the area to keep them out and to keep the inflicted in. The main sport (recreation) was boxing with the prize of escape if anyone actually beat the champion...which of course no one ever did as the matches were fixed. The first half of the book is boring as it tells of Loup and Tommy's mother and her life. The second half relates Tommy and Loup's story which is much more interesting. It ended well enough that I will definitely read the second book in the series.

Review: I really enjoyed the first 70% of this book. I loved that Death played the guitar and was sexy but also sang Pagan lullabies at night. But the story lost its way at the end, a few strange plot developments. I did like it enough to read the next one in the series when it comes out.

Review: FUN! I really enjoyed the this book. This is a present time sci-fi which I found that it can be enjoyable. I loved the characters, especially Kitty's mom. You go girl lady! The plot was good, I'm not jump up and down over it -- but I found that most of the first book does that to me. So I'm really looking forward to read the next book.

Review: Mel takes over her father's construction business after her divorce and the death of her mother. Then she starts seeing ghosts who want her help. Good character set for a series, although there were too many characters to keep track off. The mystery itself was just so-so, but cool renovation and gemology tidbits sprinkled about. And I like that Mel can take care of herself.

Review: Its fun, sexy read about a woman who finds out she is a half demon and how she handles her life after that. It turned everything up side down for her, mostly because she was a slayer and hated demons for what they done to her mom. In the end she finds love, family and learns to handle her demon half.

Review:Finished on second attempt - it was easier to suspend my disbelief now that I've read more PNR. The plot is mediocre and the villain one dimensional. The satanic-like cult with members who smell like baby powder cannot possibly be considered a true threat. The dialogue is ridiculous and the male characters sound like overgrown teenagers making a lame attempt as "gangster speak".
Nevertheless, the vampire mythos has potential and the secondary characters are intriguing. The main couple is cute, especially at the end and the fight scene is entertaining.

Review: my goodreads review

Vince Natale’s early cover art concept.
description

★★★★☆ (This is a review of the audiobook.) Loved this story! Such fun. Gen, or rather Eugenides, is a thief! Jeff Woodman does a great job of narrating, as it is told from Gen’s POV; soon I felt he was Gen, telling me this inside story of his adventure. He does it all with the right inflections and tones for humor, pathos, tongue-in-cheek derision at himself and others, along with real insight into the hearts of those he encounters. Then there are the legends of his gods and goddesses, told around campfires and on horseback. I realized Gen’s ingenuity early on and I knew going in there was a twist in this one – still, I didn’t see it coming. Can’t wait to continue the series.

Review:It was such a good and amazing story, that takes you to a land that has magic and adventure. There is love, action and sad parts in it as well. I like how Yelena and Valek end up being in love, but in the end its little sad how they can't be together and have to go separate ways for now. I can't wait to read the next book from this series and see what happens with Yelena and Valek :)

Not a new story but with some interesting twists and a likable hero and heroine who, of course, experience great happiness and even greater sorrow. I will definitely be reading the next installment.

Review:
Charley Davidson is a grim reaper who is bit strange (I mean she named her breasts Danger and Will Robinson). She seems like she'd be fun to hang out with, but she tends to attract danger like honey attracts bees. The supernatural is an interesting take and I'd like to learn more about it. The main police case never caught my attention. Reyes just seems like a jerk most of the time and it looks like there might be a love triangle.

Review:
Although I really enjoyed the first book in the series, I am not sure I will continue reading. I know about the stunt the author pulled n book 4, and I am not up to dealing with that tomfoolery. It's her story and she can do whatever she wants with it, but I don't like getting invested in books and relationships and then have the author pull a 'bait-and-switch' me, no ma'am. So erm...jury's out on the series. Might wait till it's completely over, red the last book, and see if i want to go back and read the series properly.
