MaryZee (goodreadscommaryzee) | 1 comments I've just joined GoodReads. I'm MaryZee on BookCrossing, but it's been so long since I joined that one, and of course this is nothing like BC (format-wise). I know I just need to take time to explore, but since BC is really the only website I hang out in, I'm feeling a bit lost here.

Any advice for a brand-new newbie?

Amanda (Amanda68) | 4 comments I have only been a member for a few months myself so I haven't figured out all that I want to do on here. I would say, besides the obvious of logging your books, join groups and make friends. There are a lot of us BCers here (I am SailorArby) and it shouldn't take long for your friend list to grow. I also like listopia under the explore tab. Welcome.

Nancy Brady (minesayn) | 162 comments For me, it is a way of cataloging books I am reading or have read. I also add books to read to my list, often books that I know I will receive at some future date (book ring/ray books). Goodreads allows you to review books, just by clicking or updating on the title. The star system for rating of books actually tells you what they mean. For example, 5 stars means it was amazing; 1 means didn't like it. Joining groups can be a way to connect as well making friends even with some authors. Connecting with an author allows you to check out his/her website and blogs, upcoming books. Mostly I just keep up with my books read, and sometimes test my trivia. But you can also put yourself in the running for new books by paying attention to the side bars. I have "won" one and all they ask is that you read it, mark it as a "first read" and hopefully review it for the author.

Cheryl (cherylllr) One of the best things I did was to join the Feedback group. Just reading everyone's questions, suggestions, and complaints alerts me to new, or new-to-me, features here all the time. One of the thread topics there is actually called Tips, News, and Features: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3.... (It's under 'announcements' - and, disclaimer, it was started by me, by popular request.)

I don't use quotes, quizzes, trivia, or listopia much. I love groups. I love making friends when I 'meet' someone who has reading taste similar to mine and is friendly. I love being able to several (or even lots of) reviews from ordinary people before deciding to get a copy of a book.

Dorothy (vilette) | 59 comments Thanks for this tip Cheryl...I've been a member for over 2 years but had not found this!
I like being able to record the books I read and writing the review forces me to think about what I have read. I really like seeing what other people thought about books I have read. The newsletter is great and I have twice "won' and 'firstread' book and reviewed it and it is so exciting to get that parcel in the mail.
Welcome to the new members...this is a great site and I love being part of it.

Amy (bookczuk) | 97 comments Hi! I use Goodreads primarily as a way of cataloging my books. My reviews are also posted on BookCrossing, but not all the books on my BC shelf are ones I've read. Initially GR was only books I've read, but I've expanded it to include my wishlist books and books I've slated to read soon. By friending people here, I can get a feed from their account of what they're reading etc (though I don't always have time to read the emails). I also like that if I read a review someone else has written, I can comment on it, and have a conversation. I'm not very active in groups, but the more I explore, the more I find that I like. It's a good complement to BookCrossing, and not as contentious in the places I've been exploring. Probably some grouches in some threads, but I haven't really found them yet. (phew!)
Welcome!

I first read that as "Facebook Group" and had to scratch my head on that. Then I re-read and saw "Feedback" and have to agree that it's a good group to learn stuff, though I can't keep up with it all. There's always a lot said there.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I agree that BC and GR do complement one another. But yes please do not see FB in anything I type! I do not go there nor do I have any interest in doing so! And that's my grouchiness quota for the day. :)

You should have monitored my inner reaction when I originally thought there was a reference to a facebook group on GoodReads. There was a lot of @%*#!!!! in it, and I even use facebook! It irritates me that it infringes too many other places, but I'm too far in keeping up with old and distant friends to pull out now.
