I have always seemed to read faster to classical music. The music seems to create a reading rhythm conductive for speed and increased understanding.

Makes sense, Thom....but for me, I find that I start listening to the music and lose track of what I am reading. I guess I am not a multi-tasker!!!!!
I like to listen to the musical sountracks from movies, it makes great background noise so long as no distracting songs are included. Some of my favorites interestingly are from movies that are based on books, such as Jumanji, V for Vendetta, Jurassic Park, The Da Vinci Code, and The Princess Bride.
I can't read to music. If my kids are watching tv, I can tune that out but I am drawn to music & completely lose my focus. I can't "hear" the words I'm reading. I'm always amazed that people can-but then my friends are surprised that I can read with the kids fooling around or fighting & the tv & video games going on & be completely concentrated. Two bars of music, & my mind has completely shifted gear.I wish I could. I have all these fantasies of reading to Billie Holiday or Chet Baker. Mostly jazz. In my fantasies, that is.
Popular and contemporary (vocal) music has the same effect on my reading concentration. That is why I specified classical music as a reading stimulant. It helps cover-up the sounds of daily life that inevitably surround me during the day and night. Men (in general) aren’t really known for their abilities at multi-tasking but this seems to be my exception to the rule.
I use to read in the public transport on the way to/back from work. I could just ignore the background noise, but I can't ignore music of any kind and would get easily distracted. I also can't read books while there's a TV on in the room.So I guess I'm another one of the non-multi taskers :)
I sometimes read to music, but only vocal-less music. Mostly movie soundtracks, such as Pride and Prejudice, Emma 2009, Harry Potter, Titanic, Alice in Wonderland, etc. It can't have words or I get distracted.I usually have a hard time reading if there is a TV going or if a lot of people are talking. But sometimes I can tune it out. :)
Yeah when I was in college I discovered I read/study/ and retain better to instrumental music. Whether that be jazz, classical, movie scores, etc. My favorites being the classical fusion groups Bond, Escala, Vanessa Mae, the 12 Girls Band, OR movie score composers Harry Gregson-Williams, Ennio Morricone and Hans Zimmer.
Oddly I'm both. Sometimes I can read to music and sometimes I cant. All types too. I find usually listening to the Cinematic Orchestra really helps me get in the mood for reading!

I also enjoy Bic Runga, Spanish Guitar music, Chopin and various other classical artists. IF I'm reading something very complicated I prefer silence.

No! I very rarely have any noise in the background when I am reading. I do however, listen to books when I paint, knit or sew !
I find it difficult to read with music in the background, too, though much easier to write when listening to my ipod.
I have a play list just for when I'm relaxing and reading. I can read with any music on but I prefer slower songs and I have a eclectic list. It includes The Script, Lyfe Jennings, Paramore, Kanye West and Pink, just to name a few.
I like it quiet when I read. I don't mind if birds are singing somewhere, as long as they don't overdo it.
I can read with the TV on, in the waiting room at the car dealership (very noisy) but I think I like music too much and can't read if music is on because I want to listen. I can read but what I've read just doesn't connect!

I'll stop reading and start watching my favorite scenes in my head. But if I do listen to music while reading, it is usually something relaxing like my NatureQuest CDs.
Tuning out the TV, kids, and general household ruckus has never been a problem. When we were a lot younger, it used to drive my husband's best friend crazy when he would try to include me in the conversation and I would look up from my book with a bewildered, "Huh?"
I dont usually listen to music when I read; sometimes the lyrics become intrusive. As a result I have built up a collection of World Music to listen to - if the lyrics are in a language I cannot understand they become part of the overall emotional field and I can focus on the written words. This works well, as does classical music (orchestral only). It worked really well at work too, producing a relaxing ambience without being distracting.
I don't really listen to music while I read either, but if I am in a noisey environment I can often block out the noise so I'm not distracted. I guess I don't listen to music when I read because I'd only be ignoring it anyway, so I mostly just read in silence.
I guess I'm not part of the multitasking generation. I like to read in silence, sequestered away in my basement library with bookshelves as my only distraction. Well, there is a cat also.
I don't understand how listening to music would help reading... surely it would take away from the experience, because you'd have to be focusing on two things at once.
I don't focus on the classical music I listen to I concentrate on the book and just go with the flow of the other.
i tend to read to any kind of relaxing soothing music, such as sigur ros (swedish band) or death cab for cutie, although it's strange because in college i read my textbooks to classic rock

Haha..... I had the same thought too.
Well I tried reading to music and I found out I can do both as long as the music is New Age "Healing Music" which I have never listened to before. It's a bit strange, like right now it sounds like a bubbling brook (LOL) but it is better than having the TV on really low.
I find it very soothing to listening to either classical, instrumental or soundtrack scores while I am reading. I find listening to music with lyrics very distracting. Best Soundtrack Scores to listen to while reading:
The Fifth Element (Only 2 songs)
Message in a Bottle (very relaxing)
The Saint: starring Val Kilmer
I really cannot concentrate on a book if I have music playing, I find my eyes just follow the lines without me taking in the words. That said after reading the previous posts some movie soundtracks would probably work well if they didn't have lyrics - reading the Lord Of The Rings whilst listening to the soundtrack would be interesting.
The only reason I can't play music while I read is because I usually end up singing the songs instead! Lol.

I don't usually listen to music when I read, I tend to tune out sound when I'm reading. I don't mind if it is playing in the background but I don't make a point to have it on.
Most of the times, especially when I read books that is not written on my mother tounge, I listen to chilstep playlist cause there are not lyrics. If I listn to other songs I tend to sing and I lose track of the book
I have a hard time reading with music especially classic rock like Led Zepplin.
Kiera wrote: "The only reason I can't play music while I read is because I usually end up singing the songs instead! Lol."Another thing I cant do is music and sleep. If it's soothing enough, sure. But every time a song ends, my mind slightly wakes up because it's curious what's going to come on next. Sigh.
I read to calming music sometimes, but not often. If it's classical needs to be soothing, the same for movie scores. I do a lot of rain soundtracks
I normally have country music on when reading. it just background noise. I cant have it quiet even when im sleeping!

No, I'd never be able to pay attention with music on. Sometimes I'll read with the tv in the background if the hubby is watching something that doesn't interest me. Otherwise, I need total quiet.
I have, but not recently. Usually only when I need to read, but retreating to a "quiet" place isn't an option. I prefer music without words for this; like the last two tracks of Five Pointe O. Or something instrumental. Either way.
I like to listen to classical while I read. It facilitates a nice ambiance for me, & increases my reading speed.

Sometimes I find myself watching the t.v. and reading during commercial though that usually doesn't work.

I read better when there is any sort of background noise: TV, music, people talking etc. Ironically, I have a hard time reading in silence for very long, which I know is the other way around for most people :)
