RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yesterday I was thinking of what bands everyone I know likes, and the only two I could list were:

1. The Ramones
2. The Clash

I'm not including A) people who have never heard of the band, and/or B) people who are ambivalent to the music enough not to form an opinion. In other words, beyond those two categories, I've never heard anyone say "The Clash suck" or "The Ramones are lame."

Thoughts?

In my aging, hipster-doofus universe, most if not all of my peers (early to mid-50's) are unanimous in their admiration of:

David Bowie (pre-Berlin trilogy, anyway)

Roxy Music (Bryan Ferry was big with the ladies back in high school)

Led Zeppelin

Bob Seger (it's a regional thiing)

Why?

I know people that don't like them. That don't like the commercialism, the pop sounds, all tha jazz....you are the first I have heard say "detest". Just curious.

If they hadn't split up, we would've been spared Wings. Herman's Hermits, The Move and the Small Faces were all better.

Overrated...

ms.petra (mspetra) Farrah, trust me when I say let sleeping dogs lie. Clark prefers the Stones.

Plus, who give a fat fuck who the Walrus was?

And, oh yeah: Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9...

message 13: by Farrah (new)

Farrah hehehe alright fair enough. Hey, I love the Stones.

message 14: by Farrah (new)

Farrah I'm Henry the eighth I am Henry the eight I am I am?

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Wait a minute. I've been bamboozled. I vowed a while back to never again enter the Beatles fray here at GR.

I. Am. An. Idiot.

Carry on, Fab Four faithful.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Generic, but is there anyone who doesn't like Motown?

message 17: by Brittomart (last edited Jun 16, 2011 07:11AM) (new)

Brittomart I have a friend who said he didn't like Motown when he was younger, but as he grew up and got off his high horse about music, he appreciated it more and more.

I've never heard anyone say they didn't like Luther Vandross.

message 18: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) Barry White.

message 19: by Farrah (new)

Farrah Sadly...just about everyone but me likes Journey and Bon Jovi.

message 20: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart Question: Is there a difference between thinking a band sucks and not liking a style of music? For example, I think Carrie Underwood is an excellent singer, but I don't like country music.

message 21: by Farrah (new)

Farrah Yes Britomart there is a difference. Music tastes are personal and subjective. But you have to give credit where credit is due...sometimes.

Farrah Barb wrote: "I'm with you, Farrah. I can't stand Journey, and Bon Jovi has always rubbed me the wrong way."

I'm a NJ failure because I don't like Bruce either.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I like a handful of songs by Bon Jovi and Journey - in limited doses and certainly not while sober.

But "City of the Angels" sends me right 'round the bend.

Britomart wrote: "I've never heard anyone say they didn't like Luther Vandross."

I couldn't name one Luther song if you put a gun to my head.

Name one of his hits.

message 25: by Farrah (new)

Farrah Marvin Gaye! Who doesn't love a little sexual healing?

message 26: by Brittomart (last edited Jun 16, 2011 07:32AM) (new)

Brittomart His cover of The Carpenter's "Superstar," "Never Too Much," "Always and Forever." I could keep going.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Howzabout the Monkees? Don't think I've ever heard anyone work up a head of steam and direct it towards them.

My mom once said that she thought the Ramones reminded her of the Beach Boys. That's pretty close to saying they're lame. I don't share her opinion though.

Yes to Seger but no to the rest for me. Back in high schook it was a lot of Lynyrd Skynrd, Black Sabbath, Doobie Brothers, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead.

Everyone minus one. In fact, if I were to ever come out and support enhanced interrogation, the first thing I'd do is replace waterboarding with Hold the Line.

There is no more divisive band than The Grateful Dead for my friends and family. They are loved or hated, no one seems to be on the fence.

I see that too with my friends and family. I love the Dead, my husband hates them. But he loves Judas Priest so...

I'm not the world's biggest Beach Boys fan, but I detect a bit of an influence here:

Without those differences we'd be robbed of the opportunity to piss each other off on a daily basis.

I'm not opposed to Joni Mitchell except at Christmas with that skating song.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

There are too many bands that are favorites of mine, many of whom have been listed here.

But if there's one band that sends me on a climb-the-water-tower-and-go-on-a-shooting-rampage, it's the fucking Eagles.

I can't stand the fucking Eagles.
