It would certainly mean they were non-controversial. I still think it's possible to find one song that nobody disliked, even if not one band. Maybe.
If we can get RA, Ko, Lobstergirl, Clark, and Phil all to say yes to Sweet Caroline you may be on to something.

I prefer "Cherry, Cherry" but "Sweet Caroline" is okay.I think a band that nobody hates is probably a band nobody loves that much either.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I think the band would have a bunch of devoted fans, and then a lot of people who wee ambivalent about it.
An added nuance might be that there are bands I think are nothing much on recordings, but I think they are the best band in the world while they are playing and I'm in the room.
Maceo Parker live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABLwmY... (I hope. Stupid youtube.)
Or bands that are awesome on record and live:

Anything in particular you don't like about Reggae? How about this song by Bob Marley, any good?"
Like RA said, all the songs kind of sound the same. But it's more than that, because if it's the kind of sound you like, you wouldn't mind hearing dozens of them. I just don't really care for the beat and the instrumentals, mostly.

I have a lot of misgivings about Springsteen. Much of his oeuvre I just don't like, like Born in the USA. I don't think I've ever heard a more repetitive song. But there is something about Born to Run - the chord progressions are quite beautiful. I like his voice. And some of his appeal for me is the raw sexuality of his early years. But I never just listen to him for no reason, or anything. He's not on my spod, I've never bought his albums, etc.
Okay, I do not like Sweet Caroline. It's just cheese. Sorry. Aretha Franklin? Who likes Aretha? Do I even know any Aretha? I know I do but can't call it to mind....

Or just divide them randomly?"What about artists who don't cross over or fit neatly into a genre or era? How about four pools of 16 artists put together randomly and then a polls with the top eight vote-getters in each pool continuing to the second round and so on. Sort of like this:
Preliminary rounds:
1) 16--16--16--16
2) 8--8--8--8
3) 4--4--4--4
Finals:
1) 8--8
2) 4--4
3) 2--2
4) 1--1
Winner: Tc Greatest Band of All Time
Would that be The Ricky Ricardo Orchestra? There isn't anyone who doesn't like a good Latin beat.
BABALU!
I don't think I've ever heard anyone speak ill of Queen. And David Bowie. Is there anyone who doesn't like him?

I likes me some early Neil Diamond, including "Sweet Caroline."

Outside of "Sgt. Pepper" and "Blonde on Blonde," "Troutmask Replica" may be the single most overrated album ever.

I like both Queen and David Bowie.

Me too, but Queen gets majorly overplayed thanks to advertisers, sporting events and movie soundtracks. If I have to hear "We are the Champions" one more time...
