The Secret Society of Happy People, established in 1998, celebrates "Admit You're Happy Day" on August 8. The purpose of the group is to find joy in what makes you and others happy and to not to rain on other people's parades.

For this task, identify something that makes you happy, then read a fiction or non-fiction book where that thing is the focal point of the story, narrative, or of a primary character in the book. Book about happiness in general will work, too. Examples: The Happiness Project, Stumbling on Happiness, The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living. The book you read must be a least 250 pages long.

Required: Identify the inspiration for your book choice when you post.

Optional: The SOHP claims that relationships make people most happy. Pick an activity to build your relationship with someone you know in a positive way and then share it with the group.

Sera The key for one option for this task is to be specific about what makes you happy and to read a book about it.

I'm having trouble posting answers below so I'm going to answer the questions that have been raised so far here.

A book about superhero movies would work.

Happy readers can read books about books.

Zombies will work.

Erin (NY), the book that you had listed will work. The connection that you had made between what makes you happy and the book that you had selected is a good one.

Monday - oy, still having issues with posting.

Liquor will work.

Amanda Pearl, the book needs to be about what makes you happy. In your case, a book about the relationship between a motehr and daughter will work.

Lost in a Good Book will work.

Sandy, great reco on the Bryson book.

I love zombies as well! I like sitting in front of the TV with junk food and a trashy horror film...if I'm not reading!

message 10: by Felina (new)

Felina | 0 comments I love Zombie movies, Zombie TV shows and Zombie books! I just bought a few new ones the other day and was very happy to see Sera's task.

Christine US (christineus) | 575 comments Some of my happiest times are with friends out having dinner/drinks, trying new foods and new places?

Would this work - it's about 2 individuals openings a restaurant/bar
Liquor

message 12: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandapearl) | 267 comments I LOVE talking to my mom. Could I read a book she's already read so we can talk about it? I really can't think of anything better....(does that make me lame? lol)

I'm glad it's not just me! I was beginning to take it personally. :)

Sera, does Lost in a Good Book count as a book about a book?

message 15: by Coralie (new)

Coralie What makes me happy is going for a walk. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could read for that?

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail?

I read this book about a man that decides to walk across the country after he loses everything: The Walk by Richard Paul Evans.

Into the Wild-a bit of a depressing walk that the poor guy in the story took but I love this author.

message 22: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom by Slavomir Rawicz was a gripping story of survival. (At least I remember it that way--I read it years ago.)

message 23: by Sera (new)

Sera My ability to post is spotty so please continue to check the earlier posts for answers to your questions.

Sorry for the technical issues.

message 24: by Coralie (new)

Coralie Thank you for all your suggestions. I will have to see which of them my library has.

message 25: by Sera (new)

Sera Coralie, I'm hopeful that the library will have one of them. Walking is a great thing to do for the spirit. Enjoy!

message 26: by Bea (new)

Bea I enjoy books, and I really like spending time in libraries or bookstores. Would People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks work for this task? The story is about a rare book expert who is offered the job of analyzing and conserving a Hebrew manuscript.

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 815 comments My doggie makes me happy so I think I will read...Marley & Me: Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog

message 28: by Sera (last edited Jun 11, 2011 07:16PM) (new)

Sera Bea, People of the Book will work.

Meghan, enjoy Marley & Me Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan . It's a lovely read that I'm afraid has inspired too many copycats.

message 29: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Because I think my step mum is a strong woman for looking after 2 Step children, helps her grandchildren and has coped with losing her mum, dad and sister. She has also coped with my dad w/ his heart condition. So I was wondering if I could read Strong Women - Roberta Kray?

message 30: by Sera (new)

Sera Fiona, I can see that your stepmom makes you very happy. Therefore, you could read a book about a stepmother's relationship with her stepchildren or a non-fiction book about step-parenting, etc.

message 31: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Can you name me any fiction book please?

message 32: by Sera (new)

Sera I couldn't find any fiction books. Maybe there's something else that makes you happy that you can read a fiction book about?

message 33: by Gayla (new)

Gayla Bassham (sophronisba) | 64 comments Fiona, have you read Sarah, Plain and Tall? Lincoln's Mothers might also work, but I think it might be hard to find.

No, Gayla. Who wrote it?

♥Meagan♥ (fadedrainbows) | 101 comments I want to teach ESE, and so kids make me happy, especially kids with disabilities. Could I read a book about kids or kids with disabilities?

I was thinking something along the lines of I Never Promised You a Rose Garden

message 36: by Gayla (last edited Jun 12, 2011 11:59AM) (new)

Gayla Bassham (sophronisba) | 64 comments Here it is: Sarah, Plain and Tall. Earlier the add/book author link wasn't working for me for some reason.

Edit: Never mind, I see now that it is too short anyway. I remembered it being a longer book.

Check the help thread from Donna Jo's task in the spring challenge:

There are a number of books listed that include step relationships.

Sera I'll take it.

Thanks, Rebekah.

message 47: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) | 1 comments Great! I've been wanting to read it. I thought if I couldn't use it here, then I could use it for the blue cover. but then I'd have to shift some other books around. Can't wait to find out where the "happiest Place on Earth" is. I thouhgt it was Disney World! (smile)

message 48: by Sera (new)

Sera LOL, Rebekah. Please let us know once you read the book.

message 49: by Inez (new)

Inez I enoy reading and it makes me happy to go somewhere other then here(on some days) could I read City of Bones?

message 50: by Sera (new)

Sera Inez, I'm not sure whether you are talking about traveling or taking a mental break from your day. A book about either one would work on its own. However, I don't think City of Bones works as you had described it here.
