Post here your nominations for the post-apocalypse theme read

Members may make one (1) nomination only! If you make more than one it will be disqualified. The books have to be in the post-apocalypse theme as well

Seconds are NOT required. We plan to hold a poll to limit the nominations, then a run-off poll to determine our Book of the Month!

Aloha | 538 comments I nominate The Stand by Stephen King. It's not hard core Sci-Fi, but I've heard a lot of good things about it. It's tops on my list to read.

message 3: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments Oops! Forgot the book link. I'm sitting on a foggy beach with my iPhone. Hard to do stuff like linking on the iPhone.

The Stand

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm going to nominate Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank. I own this book already, but haven't read it. I've heard it's very good. :)

message 6: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments I heard good things about that one. I do have it but haven't read it.

message 7: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) I've been wanting to read Oryx and Crake, so that's my nomination.

message 8: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Ooh, I really liked Oryx & Crake.

message 9: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) I've heard good things about it. I loved her book, A Handmaid's Tale so I have high expectations.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

A Canticle for Leibowitz?

Most of you have probably already read it, but I still haven't gotten around to it yet.

O&C is very different from Handmaid's Tale. It's a little... weird in a way, but very good. I really want to read the sequel, The Year of the Flood.

I haven't read that one... I think I might have it on my nook though. I definitely want to read it. :)

message 13: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments That one does look great, Ala. Checked and I have it. I have all the Hugo winners. It's on my to read now. I want to go through all the Hugo winners.

Ala-that was what I was gonna nominate...dangit....lol

message 16: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments I have the NPR playhouse audio version of A Canticle for Leibowitz, too. I'm playing it now. It sounds really good. But it's adapted from the book, not word for word from the book like an unabridged audio.

message 17: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments Wow, the NPR Playhouse version is really good!

i will nominate The Gone-Away World

message 19: by Ian (new)

Ian Peterson (kolonelklink) I really really like Oryx and Crake and I'd recommend it, but I have already read it too.

message 20: by Ian (new)

Ian Peterson (kolonelklink) Dunno how sci-fi it is, but The Road is a book I've wanted to read for a while

message 22: by Christine (new)

Christine I am a newbie to Science Fiction so I am not sure if my nomination is considered SF or Fantasy......I Am Legend

Oryx and Crake and Year of Flood, both by Margaret Atwood and fantastic books. I highly recommend both of those. Always wanted to read The Road. The Stand is one of my all time favorites. Of the titles nominated that I don't recognize, they look great. Thanks! My list of recommended books is overflowing, yikes!

message 23: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Hmmmm....I've been meaning to read Lucifer's Hammer for a long time. So I suggest that.

message 24: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I Am Legend is great. I definitely recommend the version with short stories included in the book. Matheson's short stories are fantastic. :)

message 25: by Christine (new)

Christine That is the edition I have, good to know!

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Christine wrote: "That is the edition I have, good to know!"

Cool! I hope you enjoy them. :) I thought they were all really good, but my favorites were 'Mad House' and 'From Shadowed Places'.

message 27: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments I really enjoyed I Am Legend. That was a while back.

message 28: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I read it last year. Earlier this month I read What Dreams May Come but I didn't enjoy it as much.

message 29: by Avinash (new)

Avinash (avelhal) | 1 comments Battlefield Earth by Ron Hubbard is an excellent post apocalyptic book

message 30: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments Battlefield Earth is also on my list to read. It's a classic.

message 31: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 490 comments I like to nominate Earth Abides by George R. Stewart.

I dont't know...I Am Legend isn't sci-fi, and its actually a novella in a book of short stories, so although it is kind of post-apocalypse, I don't think it can count.
The Road isn't sci-fi either

and I am wondering about The Stand

I guess the question would be if simply a nuclear apocalypse makes it sci-fi...that would only help The Road though

Then again, If anyone wants to argue with me, I will listen...lol

message 34: by Ryan (new)

Ryan (rhopkins) | 1 comments I just finished Life As We Knew It and think that it was a good post-apocalyptic read. It's not a nuclear disaster but a worldwide disaster nonetheless. It's also the first in a trilogy, I'll link the other two below if anyone is interested in looking at all of them.

The Dead and the Gone
This World We Live In

message 35: by Gregory (new)

Gregory Rothbard (polycarp55) How about Nevil Shut's On the Beach... it is a classic.

message 36: by Gregory (new)

Gregory Rothbard (polycarp55) Aloha wrote: "Battlefield Earth is also on my list to read. It's a classic."

Battlefield Earth would be good...

message 37: by Gregory (new)

Gregory Rothbard (polycarp55) What about Earth is Ours by Gary Bab, an alien invasion has stripped Earth of all technology and those that survived the initial destruction must take up swords to fight the giant intruders in the ensuing battles that rage. A Great Book.

Gregory Rothbard (polycarp55) mark wrote: "i will nominate The Gone-Away World"

This book looks rather good.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 39 comments I want to make a huge case for Dawn. It is an amazing series!

Lilith Lyapo awoke from a centuries-long sleep to find herself aboard the vast spaceship of the Oankali. Creatures covered in writhing tentacles, the Oankali had saved every surviving human from a dying, ruined Earth. They healed the planet, cured cancer, increased strength, and were now ready to help Lilith lead her people back to Earth--but for a price.

ok-after some thought I agree....the Stand is fine, the road squeaks in, but I am legend is disqualified...

oh, and links people! Links! we are going to get a lot of nominations here and without links we may miss something

message 41: by Sonia (new)

Sonia O'Brien (soniaobrien) | 8 comments Sorry for the late response. If I can, I'd love to cast my vote for Oryx and Crake.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Just doing nominations right now, Sonia. So you're not late ;)

message 43: by Christine (new)

Christine I am a little confused and need some clarification as to to the definition of science fiction and why I Am Legend would be disqualified. How I came up with that title was typing "post-apocalyptic science fiction" into my computer and the first book to pop up was I Am Legend which is a book that had been sitting in my TBR pile for ages. Not sure how it differs from The Stand or The Road. Just so you know this is only for clarification purposes and not of any bad feelings on my part, just want to understand how it all works. : )

Christine-
We could debate whether the story in I am legend is science fiction...there might be a strong argument for it (I havent read it so I am not sure)

The reason I disqualified it though was it is just a novella in a book of short stories...however Nikki checked into it farther and thinks it is long enough...and I am fine with that!

message 45: by Sonia (new)

Sonia O'Brien (soniaobrien) | 8 comments Thanks so much Ala. Can't wait to see the winner. They all sound excellent.

message 46: by Christine (new)

Christine Maggie-
Thanks for letting me know. Should have probably looked at that myself. This will be interesting whatever we read. There so many good titles on the list already.

message 47: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments I Am Legend is short novel length, or novella. I have it and read it. As Nicki said, most copies come with a couple short stores at the end. :)

Indeed, I can't wait to see the results, too!

Its selection would reduce my required reading for the month by one. To each his own, but there's no way I could read anything by him. My advance prejudice is too great. Really, there aren't many things I can say that about. It's kind of impressive.

I've never had an inclination to read his work before. Nothing so vehement as yours, Denae, just a lazy unwillingness to give any of it a go.
