Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments This thread is for the moderators. There are four of us, and I will make the rest into moderators once everyone has joined. :)

Here we can focus on all moderating jobs and maybe come up with a schedule for monthly reads. We can also plan out how we're going to do those monthly reads and whether or not it's necessary to create a buddy read system. All that fun stuff! :)

yahoo for jason for setting this group up!

message 3: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments Hey Marky Mark. You're not going to start an argument, are you? Or maybe an inquisition...

message 4: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Mark's going to be a moderator! :)

message 5: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments How about pick a book I already read?

message 6: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments That's a good idea, Nicki! How about we make it a classic? Something like Dune, to kick things off, maybe create a flavor for the group?

Also, should we have just one group read a month, or more?

message 7: by mark, personal space invader (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 1287 comments Mod
hello aloha! glad you're here. i don't start arguments...i finish them!

as far as group reads go, i think we should start off with just one, until our membership goes up. and i like the idea of picking a classic for the first one, should make it easier. also like the idea of waiting to poll for july.

message 8: by mark, personal space invader (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 1287 comments Mod
and i am also fine with 2 reads per month. either works for me.

message 9: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Okay, so for the first month, we'll have one read only, but every month after that it will be two.

What categories should each read be for each read? i.e. at FA we have the Epic Fantasy read and the Urban fantasy read each month.

message 10: by mark, personal space invader (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 1287 comments Mod
good question. here's some ideas:

Hard Science
Space Opera
Classic SciFi
Science Fantasy
Cyberpunk (ugh)

message 11: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments I like Nicki's idea of one random and one theme.

i second what aloha & nicki said.

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments I like that, too.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 490 comments There should be a cyberpunk folder or a steam-punk folder added here.

YES! i am a big fan of run-off polls.

message 18: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments What is a run-off poll, exactly?

message 19: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments I don't see why not. Seems an interesting way of doing things.

message 20: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 490 comments Hey I was wondering what about the fun and games or the what are currently reading folders?

message 21: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 490 comments Then also does dystopia count as a sub genre of science fiction? If it does, a folder could also be made.

Hey! Finally online tonight. I was thinking Dune too Jason-Great minds think alike!

It's so funny but I was writing down some ideas and was thinking of doing themed polls, and here you all are thinking the same thing...this makes me very relieved!

message 23: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Yay, all the moderators are moderators now! :)

message 24: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Sounds good to me. Dune is an excellent choice!

I think it is best to start out with one everybody loves! Now I am all excited,,,hehehe

message 26: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Goodnight Nicki!

I think I'm getting off here soon too, to enjoy some wine and watch a movie. :)

whimsicalmeerkat Kevin wrote: "There should be a cyberpunk folder or a steam-punk folder added here."

Aren't these two different sub-genres?

message 28: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 490 comments I hated Dune now, especially its a series now that is pointless and written all for the money.

message 29: by Kevin (last edited May 21, 2011 04:13AM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 490 comments I'm thinking the reason to read Dune because it is the most famous Science Fiction of all time, the easiest to translate from fantasy to science fiction. Also it is a easier way to ease into some harder science fiction.

I was thinking about this today...lolWe probably just need to pick the first theme...I will think on that for a few minutes...

message 31: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
My thought was books that were made into movies...but yours is good too. WE should see what jason and mark agree with. Or else we could quick think of a few more and have our first poll

message 32: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
the more i think about it-I like the idea of quick doing a poll with some themes we throw out.

we can have books by a certain author, or character driven books, maybe with your cyber punk and books made into movies...thats 4, is that enough?

message 33: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
well, they are not here! lol

Since we need to get going, maybe I will put down sci-fi horror for Jason, and ....post-apocalypse for marc, since he is concerned about rapture being tomorrow!

message 34: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat That was totally my logic as well xD

great themes! i am actually assuming that i will be Left Behind, so my concern is more for others. i hate seeing families and friends split apart! but i would like to be someplace tonight where there will be a lot of folks being Raptured....that way, right afterwards, i'll be able to pick up all the wallets & purses that are Left Behind. with all the honest folk gone, i feel confident that post-Rapture will be ripe for money-making opportunities. no more guilt! i can indulge in all the hustles, scams, and grifts to my heart's content - without feeling any sadness over cheating any Good People. yahoo, bring on those post-Rapture greenbacks! i'm gonna be RICH!

oh yeah - thanks for putting up the poll.

message 36: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I resent your implication that good people and non-raptured people are mutually exclusive categories.

its more than an implication...post-Rapture, Earth will be Good People-Free! a 24-hour party for the Wicked....and so many wealth-creating possibilities. yahoo!

moderators....what do you folks think about Seconds for nominations? personally, i think it would be great if we did NOT need to have them. mainly because i like the run-off poll idea as our narrowing-down strategy.

but i do like the idea of nominees being only the first book in a series (if they are a part of a series), unless the group has already read the first book.

message 39: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
are you just talking about the theme nominations? Then I agree

I think we should include next ins series of books we have read in the group

message 40: by mark, personal space invader (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 1287 comments Mod
your first point - yep, theme nominations. but this would work for the random nominations as well. take all nominations made in the time allotted, run a poll (may be a big one), then do another poll for the top 2 or 3. same process for both theme & random nominations.

your second point - great, we are agreed.

Mark, Jason and Nicki-

Anybody want to be the mods for either of our july reads? Go cl;aim it if you do. I want to read both, but have never read either before, so if someone else feels up to it, I would just as soon be a reader...

PS Jason...for some reason when I posted the July to be reads, only Hitchhikers shows up and I cant figure out what I did different...Can you see if you can fix it?

message 45: by Jason (last edited Jun 10, 2011 07:05PM) (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Okay, I tried to figure out why both July read books won't show, but nothing works. Could be something wrong with Goodreads, or something they changed. I'm not sure.

I will try again later.

message 46: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments No problem, Nicki! I hope you feel better soon! :)

hate to say it, but i just don't have the faintest interest in Hitchiker's Guide. no one kill me, please!

but Oryx & Crake looks interesting. love the author. i won't have a chance to finish it 'til probably mid-month, at the earliest.

message 48: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
Jason do you plan to read either one? This is the hard part about moderating, lol, having to commit!

message 49: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments I've already read Oryx and Hitchiker. Oryx was awesome, Hitchiker's, not so much, imo.

If you need someone to lead the Oryx, I can do it. If mark isn't interested...?

that would be great if you could, jason! i'll contribute but won't be able to until, probably, the second half of the month. i'm running so behind in my various group read goals. Leviathon, Magician: Apprentice, Bone Palace, Consider Phlebas, Assassin's Apprentice, Three Men and a Boat, even Hero & When Gravity Fails & Daughter of the Forest from some group reads of past months. i should probably just consider dropping some of these as personal goals. or consider dropping some groups.

er. no way, can't do it!
