**Winter Reading Challenge**
Monya wrote: "Maybe, Knowledge, you're spoiled by the super-fast pace of modern novels! I like a book I can get into."I think I'm spoiled by better writing. Cormac McCarthy's The Road was heaps better. In my opinion no one seemed concerned about dying in On the Beach, no one went on a rampage or looted, they planted flowers, brought a play pen and went fishing

The Road is DEFINITELY NOT "super fast pace". It is however, very, very good.

Love, love, loved it Dhitri!!!
Love, love, loved it Dhitri!!!
- I started this week but it's actually made me feel SICK...I don't know if I will keep reading but honestly it feels like someone who's a newbie wrote it..And besides feeling sick it's boring and just not good. I give 100 pages before i make my mind up.
Brenda wrote: "Don't force yourself Laura, too many good books out there for that...LOL"I know..But I bought it. I have problems when I buy a book..It's like MUST READ even if hate it :s Gotta stop that!!
Finished 2 books.5. Animal Farm - George Orwell
It was good but things did happen very quickly, first book I've finished in one sitting.
6. Lost Empire - Clive Cussler
I love Clive Cussler. Wish my life was this action-packed, except not really because I hate hiking and camping.

Yeaa...I'm dropped CONTRACT from my reading list..Gave it 40 pages and I just don't like it at all. It's a book I would like to actually throw in the bin..lolWill figure out a different book to read to replace it.
A question for those who are reading Water for Elephants; is there much about the training of the circus animals? I have a real problem with animals in sport/entertainment etc.
No, I'm pretty sure there's not much , Lesley. It's more about the lives of the 2 main characters....
Laura wrote: "Started Life of Pi tonight :) Much better!"
Let us know what you think Laura...it's on my TBR list ;)
Let us know what you think Laura...it's on my TBR list ;)
I'm not sure that Lesley won't find some situations regarding Rosie in Water For Elephants somewhat disturbing, as I did with the animals in Life of Pi but have to say that I consider both books well worth reading :)
1..Pick a book that has a warm or summery theme on the cover (to make you feel cosy).
2..It's a great time to bundle up and just spend a day reading. Pick a book from your Mt.TBR list!
3..It's International Children's Day on the 1st of June. http://www.care.org/newsroom/specialrepo... Why not find a YA novel or a picture book to read?
4..With World Environment Day and National Tree Day coming up why not BORROW a book from the libary/friend or pick one out of your TBR list. OR if you own an e-reader why not read a book through it instead? No purchases of books are allowed for this one! ;)
5..We all love snuggling up in front of the fire to watch our favourite movies, well with the Melb International Film Festival on 21/7 to 7/8 how about choosing a book which has been transformed into a movie.
6..a) Read a book where a word in the title has to relate to a wintery theme or
b) The chosen wintery word has to begin with a letter from the word WINTER.
Still deciding.
7..Read an Aussie author's book or books with an Aussie landscape/locale in it.
8..Choose a New Release which will be out somewhere in the 3 month period of Winter... either purchase, or borrow from the library and enjoy! http://www.goodreads.com/search?search_t...
Still deciding.
9..Pick a friend on your GR list and also select and read a book they have read. Never know, you might find something new to enjoy!
Still deciding, can't wait.
10..Curl up beside the fire and grab yourself a book full of suspense or murder! You might even spook yourself if it's rainy and windy and there is a murder going on within your book!
I'm changing my No. 4 from Atonement to Gorky Park. Atonement was always a doubtful option and I think I'll enjoy Gorky Park more. :D
I've been wondering about Atonement too, Louise. My son read it, and recommended it to me, but it's one of those I'm iffy about!! Maybe one day!

Curl up beside the fire and grab yourself a book full of suspense or murder!
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
as I can't get my hands on my original choice, I am changing my number 9 to The Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani
Also have decided on a new release - it will be The Dark Enquiry by Deanna Raybourn
Sally906 wrote: "as I can't get my hands on my original choice, I am changing my number 9 to The Blood of Flowers by Anita AmirrezvaniFantastic choice. Loved this book, but I do have a passion for anything Persian / Middle Eastern so I am biased. Not great writing but a great fun story.
I have made a new Challenge Directory for you to access the challenges as they happen http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...
I just finished my first book of the Winter challenge, Ann Patchett's State of Wonder. I was so looking forward to this book, the premise of the story was intriguing, but I must say it was a huge let down. Nevertheless I still valued this book and gave it 3 stars. Here's my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

"We Need to Talk about Kevin:"We Need to Talk About Kevin is a very scary, intense book. I rated it highly, but at the same time hated it and didn't want to finish it. A brilliant book - but one I will never read again. Very affecting.

Yep, years ago and loved it. The original movie, with Gregory Peck and co. was excellent too. So was the sound track. They used Waltzing Matilda exclusively in lots of variations.
Maybe, Knowledge, you're spoiled by the super-fast pace of modern novels! I like a book I can get into.
