Oh my! A few years ago when I was baking I actually stopped adding salt and honestly no change in taste.

Wow water with Salt! Who would have thought.

message 52: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Yeah, Dasani is just tap water (and salt, of course)...from Pittsburgh. Mmmm mmmm. Refreshing.

Tisha Random thought: Am I going to be able to watch all of McCain's speak without utter frustration overtaking me?

message 54: by She'Davia (new)

She'Davia Williams (redsoxocd) I LOVED John McCain's speech "Drill baby drill". I also loved certain things that Tom Ridge said. Like:

"Let us elect a public servant who refuses to think in terms of red versus blue - but only in terms of red, white and blue.

Thats John McCain."

And this is going in my locker tomorrow, and also giving it to my TWO friends who are republicans for thiers:

message 55: by Tisha (last edited Sep 04, 2008 08:33PM) (new)

Tisha OMG, all I could think about the 'Drill baby drill' is how crazy they all are. They are awfully sold on it. What a drastic change from McCain not supporting drilling in the past. Now he's gone SO far to the other side that his party is chanting. WTF? It was strange.

She'Davia, please help me understand what you "LOVED" about his speech. Whether you're a supporter or not...I don't think we saw the same speech because I thought McCain's speech was incredibly boring to the point I was constantly distracted. He didn't even invoke frustration in me. Weird. All he seemed to do was speak to those already committed to voting for him, he did nothing to attract swing voters.

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Logan, PAID TIME OFF...HAHAHAHAH.... That is so funny... No, Its Parent Teacher Org. I am helping with the school fundraising, and I am spending all day there. My husband said I should be getting a paycheck, as much time as I spend at the school...

Random thoughts....I know I will get killed for this but...I really enjoyed John McCain's speech.
Hey, I'm a Republican, tried and true. I said don't hate me!!!!!! It's a free world!

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

I cannot eat with a teaspoon. It's all tablespoon for me!

message 58: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) She'Davia...do you even know what "Drill, baby, drill" means?

And Tom Ridge...you mean Capt. Death?

message 59: by [deleted user] (new)

I couldn't even bear to listen to that man talk. Period.

message 60: by April (new)

April (escapegal) | 130 comments I am very un-political-minded; I turn on the convention or the debates or what-have-you with the mindset that I will FINALLY be interested and become a powerful, knowledgable woman because I have begun to grasp that elusive rung in my climb up the ladder.

Then I find that it's an hour later and I have no recollection of what was said because my mind wandered and I began to list all of the times the speaker said, "change" which leads to figuring out the lyrics for David Bowie's "Changes" and then I end up counting the change in my junk drawer.

With that being said, Tom Ridge was pretty good to PA (IMO) and I found $32.27 with which to go buy new books!

message 61: by Charity (new)

(Turn and face the strain)...

message 62: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments April,

You're so clever...and $32.27!! That's 4 paperbacks. Or one hardback and a paperback. Or one new release hardback from Borders (30% off) and 2 paperbacks. Or 2 kids hardbacks. Oh, the possibilities!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tisha Random Thought: TGIF

message 64: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I echo Tisha's thoughts. TGIF indeed. For being only a 4 day work week it really seemed to drag.

As far as the Conventions go, I can't watch pols speechify, ever. I even tune out Obama's masterful orations after a while. I'm not even going to try to watch McCain stumble over words and make lame jokes. I just read the transcripts online the following day. It's far easier to read politics than it is to listen to it.

Melissa (melitious) Random Thought brought on by all the political thoughts: If I dislike politics so much, why do I work for an office that makes sure politicians follow the rules? :-P And love every minute of it?

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Random Thought: I need to go on YouTube and watch Obama's speech.

Side Note:

Bush's "angry left" comment? Laughable.

message 73: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I live in South Carolina and they were saying we were going to see some of the effects of Hanna. It is raining right now. A friend of mine is in Myrtle Beach, and she said they are having some bad weather!!

message 74: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Hey I'm in the path of Hannah's wrath too! CT is supposed to get it tomorrow. I'm hoping to hit the library early in the morning, before it gets bad.

Random Thought: I hate it when the library doesn't have the books I want.

I'm watching the Stand Up for Cancer program right now. McCain gave a 2 second speech...he really looks like the crypt keeper....sorry to all the Republicans in the group. Obama had a 5 minute speech giving his platform on cancer. Interesting.

message 75: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I just watched the STAND UP FOR CANCER and cried my eyes out. I lost my Mom to cancer 2 years ago, and it hurts like crazy. My father-in-law is fighting it right now. I hate cancer.

And I think both guys spoke for about the same amount of time. Of course, I was bawling the whole time, so I could be wrong. And I think it might have been the lighting with McCain...This coming from one of the "Republicans in the group" (maybe one of the few??)lol

message 76: by Kristie (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:45AM) (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) I am thoroughly enjoying "Water for Elephants" In fact, I started the audiobook on Wednesday (its over 10 hours) I have 3 left......

message 77: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Ahhh. Kristie
Water for Elephants is one of my favorites.
Awesome book.
Read it 2x!

message 78: by She'Davia (new)

She'Davia Williams (redsoxocd) Charity: Drill baby Drill...drilling for oil within our own country. Which really needs to be done so that we can stop sending money away to other countries.

As for how McCain's speech was: yes there was a ton of problems with it, but everyone knows that he isnt good at giving speeches. So for him it was a good speech.

message 79: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Random thought....

Regarding politics, you are going to see what you want to see and hear what you want to hear.
Republican or Democrat.....
Interesting comments from everyone on this...
Let's just say...I will agree to disagree with most of them.
Politics are interesting...but this is the NEXT BEST BOOK CLUB!

message 80: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Ohhhh...Water for Elephants is one of my favorites too! I fell in love with Jacob.

message 81: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Random thought: Taking parking money from people attending a politcal rally is the worst thing ever! As is trying to cram 10,000 of these people into a 7,000 person venue.

message 82: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) LOVED Water for Elephants!

Random thought: Am hoping that all of the rain we are getting today will give me a great opportunity to read my butt off! Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is so different than The Other Boleyn Girl! :-D

message 83: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) its supposed to rain all day....i have to drive back home and help my sister register for the baby, then I gotta walk around the block to a friend's surprise party......grrrrr rain.

message 84: by Charity (last edited Sep 06, 2008 06:44AM) (new)

Charity (charityross) "Drill baby Drill...drilling for oil within our own country. Which really needs to be done so that we can stop sending money away to other countries."

First, it will take at least 5 years to get the rigs up and running. Then, it will take around 10 years for the gas prices to ease in our country. And finally, the heart of the problem is that the U.S. uses as much fuel as China who has over 1.3 billion people AND is going through an industrial revolution...how long will anything we find even last us?? It isn't foreign oil that is the problem, it's the gross dependency on oil, period.

End rant.

message 85: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Random thought...I'm exhausted.

message 86: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Random thought... I hope my friends are ok at Myrtle Beach, SC...

And my heart goes out to the family of a 42 year old man who died at a local hamberger joint last night on his way to a high school football game. Left behind a wife and 2 kids. You just never know...

message 87: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Random thought incited by Ken's random thought... Add to that the amount of US debt that China holds? Very interesting...and very sad.

Charity, what a great point. Drilling is such a temporary fix to long term issue. When are we going to be proactive enough to look beyond our immediate future? ...maybe when there's no more money to be made from oil.

And TNBBC or not, I love hearing everyone's insights on politics. There are a lot of intelligent people in this group and I appreciate hearing from you.

Ken, Any storm updates?

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

Ken how are things? I am guessing the storm hit since you haven't been on in a while. Hope you have power.

I too also like hearing everyone's viewpoints on politics, books and just whatever!

I am so bored today! I need to weed my yard but it's too cool out. So I am being lazy.

message 89: by April (new)

April (escapegal) | 130 comments I found out today that one of my favorite bands is playing close by, but I don't have anyone to go with because all of my "concert" friends have moved away. I began to hyperventilate and I think I'm having a mid-life crisis.

Sad. :(

message 90: by She'Davia (new)

She'Davia Williams (redsoxocd) I signed up to volunteer at McCain's Boston HQ today, for monday and wednesday. I have no idea what I will be doing monday, but on wednesday I will be making phone calls.

This should be fun.

message 91: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) Sadly, I tuned in to "Stand Up for Cancer" at the very end. I was so impressed that all 3 major stations carried it at the same time!

message 92: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Man...Ken that is awful!!
You are so right. It's hard to imagine people being so careless.

Random thought.....
My daughter scored 7 goals in her soccer game yesterday.
I was so proud of her..I had to be humble at the game though. She scored more goals than the other team put together.
This is only her second season.
She is 5

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

Very distrubing about the two children. I hear so many cases of children forgetting about their child in a car, but 3 hours! Come on!

Kellie: tell you daughter awesome job!

A cricket has made it's way somewhere in my house. I can here it, it's loud & exceedingly irritating!

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments She'Davia, thought I don't agree with your opinion on this election, I think it's AWESOME that you are getting involved!

message 97: by Gracee (new)

Gracee | 99 comments Emilee - make sure it's not your fire/smoke alarm sounding like a cricket. My mother SWORE there was one in her house - lol yup, it was the fire / smoke alarm in the hall. Low battery.

;)

message 98: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments Ken,

How awful about those kids! Whenever I hear about things like this I always wonder how people do that!!! I've never once forgotten about my kids when they're in the car!!!! And to leave a kid unattended on an 8 foot slide? Where's people's brains?

message 99: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Gracee. I checked but it is definitely a cricket. I think it is in the laundry room. I hate crickets!

My cat is too lazy to track anything down. Darn I need to train her.

This cricket is seriously getting on my nerves it's so high pitched. Hard to ignore!

Ken, we got alot of dark cloud and a grey sky in the morning, then the rain hit. Not too bad. Was here and gone by the time i got home. Not too windy either. I think we made out quite well.

As far as the political talk, yes, this is a book forum, but I am ok with starting threads that are non book related. (we've got this one, and the sports {yeck} one)... the only thing that tightens my gut is the fact that TWO topics tend to start out nice, and become a huge debate and end up with fists flying and hurt feelings later, and those TWO would be POLITICS and RELIGION.

The only thing I ask is that everyone use caution when posting:

--Please keep those topic contained to the threads they belong in, I dont want to see them being hashed out in the other book related threads.
-- do not use this group as a podium to force feed people your views. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and everyone is entitled, and encouraged to express that opinion.
--Please do not resort to name calling or bashing (not that I think anyone here would do that).
--Be sure that you are not posting something to encite or purposely upset someone.

If I feel anyone is breaking any of these guidelines, I will email you about it. But I cant see that being an issue.

Actually, I dont think I even needed to post this, but as Ive said, I get a tight gut when we start treading into these murky waters. There is quite a large difference between discussing your favorite books and quirks, and discussing your political and religious affiliations. Those seem to be alot more personal and alot more painful.....

Nuff Said,
Carry on TNBBC!!!
