Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Reading The Thief of Venice The Thief of Venice by Jane Langton and so far it's delightful-- literate, fast-paced, interesting drawings in it, good characters.

In Greek! Wow! That's superb!
I couldn't get into Blindness but, despite that, I've picked up a copy of his book, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ. Hopefully, this one will go better than Blindness did.

Michelle wrote: "I've chosen Middlesex for my first book of the summer... I'm only 21 pages in, and it's not boring me at all. Strange for a book to be interesting from the very beginning. ..."
Middlesex was awesome. I listened to the audio version and was amazed by the richness of the story and the narration. It's a book I'll reread one day...and I don't often reread books.

I'm currently reading Doc: A Novel and really enjoying it. I haven't had much time to read this week so I'm not very far along but the story grabbed me within a few pages.

James Wilkinson | 52 comments Currently reading George Eliot's Middlemarch. It hasn't really captured my undivided attention - it seems rather plodding. This view has been tempered by the wise words of one reader who compared it to a soap opera in that we stop-by in one character's life for a brief instant and then move on to the next. Its probably me and my approach to books - I prefer a main character - someone to anchor the storyline. In this book you have several. Plus I am unable to engage with some of the characters - is there anyone out there who actually liked Fred Vincy?

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i tried to read The Dirty Girls Social Club but the characters were annoying, and i didn't care for the way it was written. glad i got it at half-priced books. today i started Love Rosie and it's just as good as the other ones i've read from Cecelia Ahearn. it's presented in letter/note/IM/email/voicemail format which is different, and works with this story.

So about 5 pages after I posted the above, suffolk's situation changed dramatically so the issue I was having went away. She's still switching back and forth a little but it's no longer a distraction. She writes a good historical-- this is the third one of hers I've read and even though I usually have 7-8 books going at once, I find when one of them is one of hers, the other books I'm reading get neglected.

message 24866: by Michele (new)

Michele I tried to read One for the Money by Janet Evanovich, I was about half way through and just hated it, I would have thrown it across the room in disgust but it was on my kindle, so had to be content with deleting it! Not quite as satisfying though :)

I am now reading Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende and I am enjoying it so far.

Yeap! In Greek because I'm Greek! It's my second book of Saramago so far. I would suggest All the Names as an introduction to his work.

message 24868: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Just started The Stolen Crown: The secret marriage that forever changed the fate of England The Stolen Crown The secret marriage that forever changed the fate of England by Susan Higginbotham which seems so far to be about the same story as The Queen of Last Hopes The Queen of Last Hopes by Susan Higginbotham only told from the perspective of some characters on the other side of the conflict. Interesting, and I didn't realize that when I started it. Plus it's the last book I need for a couple of my May challenges so BOOYAH!

Bill Bryson always makes me laugh. Have you read anything else by him?

message 24872: by Jane (new)

Jane | 27 comments So, I finished The Silent Land. I really liked it - great atmosphere, appropriately eerie. Ready for something that was less of a quick read, I picked up The Magus, but now I feel like I am just waiting for it to become the "daring literary thriller" that is advertised on its cover. So far, it is in no way "impossible to stop reading." We'll see....

Lynda, I'm thinking of reading the Clan of the Cave Bear series. Did you read all of them and what did you think?

I'm still still still reading Jane Eyre and am really liking it - I just haven't had alot of time to read lately. Hope to get back to it tonight.

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 73 comments I just started reading Mrs. Dalloway and I'm re-reading the Harry Potter books (again) before the final movie comes out.

I want to start brushing up on (or learning, as the case may be) my British/English history, but I don't really know where to start. Anyone have any suggestions?

message 24882: by Angela (new)

Angela Sellers I just finishedThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and now I will start Dreams of Joy: A Novel. I won an advanced reader's copy, so I want to read it before it is actually supposed to come out.

Rayna,
Try to go to explore-genre-history-european history from your home page. Great ideas there and then you could check listopia for british history. Another idea - search groups for british history. There are probably several! I can't wait for the last HP movie but will not be rereading the series as I am working towards challenges and getting ready to move :) Enjoy

I don't think I ever finished the series (and the latest was just released). I remember enjoying the ones I did read, though.

Jane Eyre is probably my favorite book ever. Glad you're enjoying it.

Beth I just finished the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series and really liked it. For my book discussion group, I read Somewhere Inside: One Sister's Captivity in North Korea and the Other's Fight to Bring Her Home, which made for a very interesting discussion. And now I'm reading an Agatha Christie classic A Murder Is Announced. Next, I plan to tackle some mysteries written by fellow Midnight Ink authors that I picked up at the Malice Domestic conference.
