I just finished The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt as well. I thought it would never end! The storyline and characters were interesting however I definitely agree that it felt "overstuffed". I'll have to look over the thread about this one.

message 23752: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Finished To Kill A Mockingbird earlier today, enjoyed it. I'm about to start The Princess Of Clèves by Marie-Madeleine de LaFayette. Both 1001 list books. I hope to read more from the list this year since I've only read 32 so far.

I think your dad might be referencing that it's a rather dark book; I'm on page thirty something and there have already been beatings, gang fights, rape, and armed robbery. So yeah, not what most fathers want their little offspring reading lol

Leanna - Yeah the language is the hardest part of the book but I seem to be getting the hand of it and can recognize a lot of the more commonly used slang words so I think if I dont take long breaks between readings I should be alright. I'm still rather early in it so not much of an opinion to give but I have the distinct desire to read more so it can't be too bad ;)

message 23754: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bexsi) I have finished Once Bitten, Twice Shy Once Bitten, Twice Shy (Jaz Parks, #1) by Jennifer Rardin 2 stars
Kiss of Midnight Kiss of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #1) by Lara Adrian One of the scenes particularly creeped me out -the one where Lucan performs a sexual act on the heroine while she is sleeping. Apart from that it was ok I've been told that the series gets better so I'm not giving up on it yet. 3 stars
Last Sacrifice Last Sacrifice (Vampire Academy #6) by Richelle Mead I found this one very slow until about half way through then it really did pick up and got really exciting that I couldn't put it down. I liked it, but it didn't leave me feeling much afterwards like the previous five novels in this series. It's no Blood Promise BUT still a very good read I love the cover design, The black heart made up of dragons, birds and flowers over the blood red background, the dripping blood effect and the simple silver lettering. 4 stars
Catching Fire Catching Fire (Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins a great number of plot twists were beyond anything I had imagined. And I didn't expect so much of it, Rest assured that this book destroys superbly the idea that the second in a trilogy is the weakest. If you have not read The Hunger Games, do so immediately. 5 stars
I have started Angels' Blood Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh

Guys don't kill it for me. I really wanted to read this book. Well thanks... I won't have to buy it. You did me a favor. But I will my Room, I hope it is a good read.

Sarah Honenberger (sarahhonenberger) | 20 comments I'm trying to read One Hand Clapping, have been on a Scandanavian jag with Out Stealing Horses among others. Spare writing, lots of deep hidden emotion, not a lot of dialogue, you wonder why all that sun doesn't make them happier folks. Any one else feel that way?

message 23758: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Honenberger (sarahhonenberger) | 20 comments I think it's a brilliant idea, have only read the first two pages, on my stack, but have PR stuff to do for my third novel that was just released on Dec 28, so am not reading this week. Maybe after my signing at the Librarian's conference in San Diego, at least on the plane on my Kindle on the way home.

Liz I'm currently reading Eating Animals & Thirteen Reasons Why, both interesting & thought-provoking books in their own ways.

message 23762: by Madeline (last edited Jan 04, 2011 01:15PM) (new)

Madeline | 293 comments I just finished Marked, which despite its negative reviews, I enjoyed. I actually felt the teen talk made it stronger, in believability anyway, and it took the vampire mythos somewhere interesting. Nothing to really use the brain for though.

I'm going to start One for the Money today. I've been looking forward to light reads. It seems to be an enduring mood, probably until I hit a really bad one and then I'll want some serious storytelling. :)

message 23763: by Liz (new)

Liz Madeline, I just got Marked on my Nook & have heard lots of mixed reviews on it. I'm excited to try it out though. Sometimes I just need a no-brainer read!

message 23764: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 212 comments I really liked marked, and the series as a whole for the first 4 books. After that is when it goes down hill for me.

message 23767: by Sue (new)

Sue (sueb50) | 18 comments How many of Sarah Sundlin"S books have you read so far? This is my first and I know there's one the precedes A MEMORY BETWEEN US, but the library didn't have it so I started with this one.

message 23770: by Lillie (new)

Lillie | 25 comments Just started a re-read of Wuthering Heights. I haven't read it in over 20 years and I'm curious to see if it holds up for me. I absolutely loved it and have fond memories.

message 23771: by Liz (new)

Liz Just finished Thirteen Reasons Why last night & plan to start Unearthly today.

message 23772: by Diane (new)

Diane (readergirl235) Lillie, I love it! What a great idea. I also loved Wuthering Heights the first time around and have fond memories of discussing and writing about it in school. You've inspired me. I think I'll add it to my "to read" hotlist for this year.

Paula | 1098 comments Liz wrote: "I'm currently reading Eating Animals & Thirteen Reasons Why, both interesting & thought-provoking books in their own ways."

I thought "Thirteen Reasons Why" was a well done book. A private look into what would cause a person to commit suicide although, these were her reasons, others would be different but good insight.

message 23775: by Liz (last edited Jan 05, 2011 02:12PM) (new)

Liz I agree Paula, it was very interesting & well done. I kept hoping somehow there would be a miracle in the end, but that obviously wasn't an option (not spoiling anything - it's in the description ;).

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finally finished The Shining and was a little disappointed by it. I liked it, but I had to force myself to keep going for very little payoff. Now, I'm reading The Pillars of the Earth and even though I'm only 40 pages in, it's off to a very good start.

message 23779: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 293 comments I'm glad you liked the first four Jennifer and Catie. It's funny because someone was just saying to me that nine books was too long and I said I couldn't imagine the series being viable past four, it seems as if school should be the length of the story arc.

I hope you like it Liz, I had a good time reading it. I liked the differences made from the general vampire genre.
