What are you reading?
Mona, I definitely do look forward to my library day and the complete lack of self control that goes along with it. It does make getting other things done difficult though, since all I want to do is read...Susanna, I hope you can get into The Red Tent. I really enjoyed it. I also hope you get to sleep soon!

I've only read Promise Not to Tell: A Novel by Jennifer McMahon and I think because I loved that one, my expectations were too high for Dismantled and led me to be disappointed. I say if you can get it at the library, you should because I paid full price for my copy and I'm so regretting it.
Anyway, now I'm going to start reading Big Stone Gap. I'm just in the mood for some comfort Southern Fiction.
Plowed through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and planning on starting The Help, after I get some cleaning done.....
Sheila wrote: "Plowed through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and planning on starting The Help, after I get some cleaning done....."THE HELP was great!
set aside my current reads and sped through recent thrift store find of mumbo gumbo by jerrilyn farmer. perfect match for hot day spent by columbia river and swimming to cool off then more reading, repeat for several hours. sorry no caps. having to type with one hand while cat lies in crook of left arm. so hunt and peck it is.
Carol (Kitty) wrote: "Cleaning what is that?"Carol, I know, but I have got to get it done, unfortunately the books have been calling my name and things have gotten a little out of control! And can you believe that the kiddo and the dog and cats expect me to put down the book and feed them? :)
How dare they, don't they know you are the Queen. I expect to start Black Swan Green some time today. I like his rich use of language.
Carol (Kitty) wrote: "Cleaning what is that?" It is something other people do while we are reading books :0)
Taking a much needed breather with a light-hearted smaller read by Kris Radish, Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn.
Rayna wrote: "Mona, I definitely do look forward to my library day and the complete lack of self control that goes along with it. But I go a great stash(a mix of different genres) and am really looking forward to reading them.
I know what you mean about the challenge of getting other stuff done. For me, it kinda goes both ways:
. don't get anything done due to being here on GR or reading
. don't get much reading done or get behind on the threads due to chores/family/other hobbies.
I am currently reading "The Accountant's Story". It is written by the brother of teh Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar. It's pretty good, but not great.I love true crime, so it's fairly interesting to me.
Debby wrote: "I finished Blessings by Anna Quindlen and yesterday. Loved it!! I starting North River by Pete hammill last night. It's really good so far."
I really love all of Pete Hamill's books. He has a way of capturing your mind and heart at the same time. If you have not read Snow in August, I highly recommend it.
Marelis wrote: "I am currently reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and Sightings by Linda Hogan and Brenda Peterson."Marelis,
I know there have been more recommendations for Shadow of the Wind online than you can count, but there's a reason for that - it is amazing. While I really enjoyed the second book (prequel), Angel's Game, it didn't do nearly as much for me as Shadow of the Wind. It's always nice to finish a book, but the sad thing is having to move on and leave it behind. However, this is one that will stay with me.
I've just added Inkdeath, Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast, and Rose Daughter to my currently reading list.
Finished American Wife and gave it 3 stars. Starting Skinny Dip and still reading Columbine. Enjoying both of these so far.
I've been reading - in between other books - The Book of the Unknown by Jonathon Keats. It's a really great collection of stories - very different. It is hard to believe, but wonderful, that this can be the same author as the one who wrote Pathology of Lies. I thought that was just plain creepy and couldn't finish. But I still have it on my to-read list.
Sheila wrote: "Plowed through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and planning on starting The Help, after I get some cleaning done....."That's one of the benefits of listening to books on tape, CD or my audio digital player....I can listen to me book while I'm cleaning! I don't clean without my book playing at the same time. :)
I have a nasty habit of reading several books at once. At the beginning of the month I was at about six, and I've got it down to three now. Hopefully I'm gonna knock 'em all out by the end of the month…

I seem to be on a disappointing kick of reading books that looked so good, but I ended up not enjoying them. It started with The Buffalo Soldier, then Water for Elephants, and now The Phantom of the Opera. I'm hoping that this summer cold has just has me out-of-sorts and I haven't lost my book-choosing mojo.
Suzanne wrote: "I seem to be on a disappointing kick of reading books that looked so good, but I ended up not enjoying them. It started with The Buffalo Soldier, then Water for ElephantsI've been wanting to read Water for Elephants for a long time. What in particular didn't you like?
As for me, I have a hard time sticking with just one book at a time, and often get distracted from them, so I probably am currently in the process of reading about 15 books! However, the ones I'm really actively reading are Angela's Ashes and Suite Française. I'm only about 40 pages into Angela's Ashes, but am enjoying it so far (even if it is a tad depressing already). As for Suite Française, I've been reading it for a long time now (about 4 months) and only have about 20 pages to finish it.
I think I'm also going to start Frankenstein tonight since it's required summer reading and I want to be able to discuss it on here!

I make sure I take time for myself (read) as it's what keeps me sane. My family appreciates my time reading too... As long as I don't go overboard. I try to limit my time reading to 1-2 hours a day, unless it's a full day off then it's probably more. ;)

Debby you are a genius! I only just stumbled across this brilliant idea myself recently. I had a lot of credit on my iTunes account so I downloaded an Erma Bombeck book on my iPod, and would laugh my way through the weeding every week. I was never so happy to go out into the heat to weed my flower beds! ;) It was awesome! And it keeps you from putting off chores!

I know there are 3 that won't be finished for quite some time. The others...well I'll shoot for having them read by the end of August, as the end of July is in only a week. ha ha.
I just started 1984 and I am really liking this one, not sure why I hadn't read this one before now. Am also about 100 pages in ofThe Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and I like this one so far as well.
Uggh I've been so lethargic about reading lately. I don't know what my deal is. I finally went and picked up the Stephen Mitchell translation of Gilgamesh, now I just have to crack the cover. Still reading through Long for This World: The Strange Science of Immortality but my attention span is not doing it justice. It's really quite good and often surprisingly funny. If only I could get some reading vim.

Had to give up on The New Annotated Dracula for now, too dense for my low levels of concentration right now. Halfway done withStories: All-New Tales but feel like i should be done with it already given how much i've enjoyed it.
I'm impressed to **** and back. The 94 year old lady I care-take lent me some books she had while I stay here for the week. I know she's healthy, except for her hearing. but the books she had were current and top notch. I chose I, Alex Cross by Patterson. I've never read Patterson's Cross series and am enjoying it. Patterson seems to be an author I love or hate.
I'm reading Pygmy right now. If this book wasn't so hard to read, I'd think it was really disturbing. I just finished the scene in the mall bathroom (aka spa) with the bully and I'm sitting there like "WTF am I reading?" I'm glad I didn't understand half of what was written.
Just finished Airhead. It was quite okay, light reading. I just started reading Sundays at Tiffany's by James Patterson. I've always read James Patterson's thriller books and didn't know he wrote romance story, so it would be interesting to read him as a romance writer.
Joanie, I just finished Dismantled: A Novel and I gave it two stars... I've only read Promise Not to Tell: A Novel by Jennifer McMahon and I think because I loved that one, my expectations were too high for Dismantled and led me to be disappointed. I say if you can get it at the library, you should because I paid full price for my copy and I'm so regretting it.Too late! I was at Borders yesterday and it was on the buy one get one half table so I bought it along with Dark Places oh well.
Anyway, now I'm going to start reading Big Stone Gap. I'm just in the mood for some comfort Southern Fiction.
Loved this series-so good!
@ Bernie and KristiI do that as well. I like it though. I like having the option to read something else depending on my mood.

If you enjoy 1984, you might look at This Perfect Day by Ira Levin. Some say its even better than 1984. I like them both.
Thank you for the heads up about This Perfect Day. I was unaware of this and have ordered it from Amazon. None of my libraries have a copy so I will have to wait until November when the new paperback is released. Thanks again ---
I finished THE BTIGHTEST STAR IN THE SKY by Marian Keys and gave it 5 stars. It was great! Now I am starting 2666 by Roberto Bolano. For those of you that have read it, is it any good. I do value your thoughts.
Nice to know it's not just me Rachel, maybe I need some fluff to get me through it. All I can think about right now is watching True Blood and Veronica Mars, and playing Words with Friends lol.

I added Perfect Day to my to-read list. I had also heard that [book:The Handmaid's Tale went along with 1984 I'm picked it up over the wkd and planning on reading it when I finish 1984
I just finished A Prayer for Owen Meany and loved every single sentence in the 543 page book. UNBELIEVABLE. I did not want it to end. I needed a book like that- I feel like Suzanne, reading a string of so-so books. Owen Meany was amazing. Now, I'm reading The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee by Sarah Silverman. I've been waiting for this from the library for a long time. I love her sense of humor. After that, I have a stack of library books to get through...I raided the library this weekend!!
The Handmaid's Tale is a book that I have never been able to let go even tho I read it for the first time over twenty years ago.I picked up and ARC copy of Daughters of the Witching Hill from my local bookstore. I am starting it tonight.
I looked up the word cleaning and it is related to the word work.... scary
Oh Marti, I love to hear what you think of Daughters of Witching Hill. I have that on my shelf to read.
I finished Dead in the Family today and have started Death of a Cozy Writer and Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time.

I starting North River by Pete hammill last night. It's really good so far.
