Cammie I just started The Lucky One.

message 15602: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) I'm working my way through Jane Austin The Complete Novels. Finished Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice but I'm taking an Austen-break before moving on to Mansfield Park.

Also reading Baudolino by Umberto Eco and enjoying it. Reading Eco always makes me wish I knew more world history.

Started Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt and Angels of Destruction A Novel by Keith Donohue yesterday. Freakonomics is interesting in an unorthodox way. The Stolen Child was Donohue's first novel and I loved it. Angels of Destruction looks like it will be just as good.

I love freakonomics, it's freakonawesome! I can't wait to read super freakonomics and see what other crazy theories they come up with.

Lauren | 220 comments Just finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak! One of my new favorite books! Starting The Red Necklace by Sally Gardner!

message 15605: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (libbith) | 39 comments Just finished The Pact by Jodi Picoult and about to start Isabella Moon by Laura Benedict.

I think I might just be tempted to have a bit of a romance-thon soon though. I think I've reached my quota for unhappy endings for the moment!

message 15606: by Kate (new)

Kate | 119 comments I'm about 100 pages into Her Fearful Symmetry. It took me a little bit to get into the flow of things but I'm enjoying it!

message 15607: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) I loved Wonder Boys, next up: Ian McEwan's In Between The Sheets.

message 15608: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Klaassen (librarymom23) Just finished last night,"The Alchemyst" by Michael Scott. Look out Harry Potter here come the twins!

message 15609: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments I'm on page 179 of Her Fearful Symmetry. To my surprise I've found it very charming so far.

message 15610: by Maicie (last edited Nov 04, 2009 08:14AM) (new)

Maicie I just finished The Whispering Room. Yuck. I've been listening to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but have discovered that my mom is right...I just don't listen. I keep rewinding, loosing my place, and not focusing. I guess the written word is my only option. I can't Magic Eye and I can't multi-task (listen and walk at the same time). How embarrassing.

Just started The Ten-Year Nap by Meg Wolitzer. Wonderful.

message 15611: by JSou (new)

JSou I can't do audiobooks either, Maicie. I've tried, but my brain always wanders off just trying to listen.

Maicie,
Listening to someone read that you can't see is hard for many people. I also forget I am listening and my mind wanders off. I find when I listen to lectures, I need to take notes, or make a trigger list (key words) or even doodle to help me stay in the present and listen. That is called active listening. Another method would be to picture what the person is saying - that helps you use more senses. Ask your mom to help you summarize what she has said or use different words- that also helps with you practice active listening.

The brain is a wonderful muscle, but it works differently for everyone, people are such different types of learners. You could be a better visual learner. (magic eye puzzles don't count) That is what I am - I have had to learn to use what is strong for me (my sight) to help me listen.

Good Luck Maicie!

How is it so far? I can't wait to read it!

message 15617: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Last night I finished reading Julia and Julia - and I really liked it! This is a book that I had absolutely no interest in reading. I ended up having to use it for the Group Read task in the Seasonal Challenge because I had already read the other two books. After dreading it and putting it off for so long, I finally decided to bite the bullet. What a pleasant surprise!

So does this mean I might actually like Eat, Pray, Love? That is another book that I have no desire to read because people talk about how narcissistic and unlikeable the author is.

I'm about half way through The Jane Austen Book Club, which is not as terrible as I was expecting but still pales in comparison to the movie.
This morning I also started Last Night in Twisted River A Novel by John Irving. I'm so excited and can't wait for Irving to knock my socks off.

message 15618: by JSou (new)

JSou Eating Animals is great so far. I read the first page to kind of get a feel for it, and didn't put it down until about page 60...even while making dinner.

I really liked Julie & Julia, too! I wasn't expecting to get a whole lot out of that one, but was shocked at how much I actually enjoyed it.

I'm so jealous you have the new Irving! I definately want to check that one out.

message 15619: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I am still dragging myself through The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and now that I finished I Capture the Castle(which was really good), I chose Saving Faith to help me get through the other book. First time I am reading a david Baldacci.

message 15620: by Lindz (new)

Lindz (miss_bovary00) I really liked the curious incident of the dog, though I have to admit it took a little while to sink into because of the language. But I love how it illustrates how words need emotion behind them for them to have meaning.

And would love to read I captured the castle I have heard so much about it!

Lindsay, I am now at page 113 and still didn't get into the story. I think it is just not for me the writing style and it goes too slow without anything really been told.

I was sceptic about I capture the castle and the beginning was a bit slow but what came after grew and grew. I don't say you will for sure love it but there is a good chance you will like it.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I'm reading Angels of Destruction A Novel by Keith Donohue and I'm loving it so far. I love it even more than The Stolen Child and I loved that one, too.

hee hee.. gotta love it. I just realised that the last chunk of the book is just notes. Not part of the actual novel at all.

Glad to see you liked "Little Children" Eric. I thought it was an ok read but it was sure a dysfunctional bunch of characters! LOL I have "The Titan's Curse" coming from the library on audio soon. Cute series.

I'm in the middle of The Hunger Game's right now and I'm loving it! I'm glad I already have a hold for the second one.

message 15632: by Michelle♥ (new)

Michelle♥ I just finished Lord of the Flies by William Golding. It was just "meh" for me. Maybe I missed out on all the symbolism that it was suppose to represent? IDK. Oh well...

I received a BOAT LOAD from my library today! I had holds placed on about 8 books and what-do-you-know, of course they ALL come in at once?! I hate it when that happens because now I feel rushed to get through them all instead of just enjoying them!

Going to glance over them all now and then decide which one to cleanse my mental palate with next....

Fenixbird SandS | 403 comments Two really..but in between the arduous tasks. Aaargh...Someone hand me a book..P L E A S E! ! !

Stephen King's The Eyes of the Dragon
Greg Mortensen's Three Cups of Tea

Both are terrific!

JG (Introverted Reader) I finished Prayers for Sale. It was a sweet story, but the writing wasn't great for me, so it only got three stars.

Now I'm trying to start The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. No, I haven't seen the movie. :-)

I read this one twice. Once in high school and once last year just for the heck of it. I was hoping I would like it more than I did in hs, but its just alright still. I totally understood the symbolism this time around, but I don't get it why my brother and sister like it so much. Everyone's different

message 15642: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15 comments I'm still reading Isabel Allende's "Paula." When I first started, I was a bit put off with her stream of consciousness writing, but, mea culpa, I shortly realized it is a memoir. At any rate, I soon became caught up in her prose--so beautiful. What a talent. I now read it, not only for the richness of her background, but for her skill with words.

I really look forward to it. And the author seems very nice - he sent a personalized note and a bookmark along with the signed book. I was so excited!

I'm really looking forward to this one. :D
