2. Would a book where the protagonist is a soccer player and runner work for the PE/Sport task even though it is not the focus of the story just part of it?

While 25 years is nothing to sneer at, I don't know that would considered the test of time, either. When I think classic, I'm thinking more along of the lines of White Fang, the Foundation series, stuff like that. But I don't think my disagreement means that you shouldn't take the points or anything. Amy said it was fine and she's doing all the hard part of running the challenge. Don't mind my side commentary. :)

I took Ramona as a classic. I would consider BSC one as well, at least for my generation. It's a modern classic.

I just figured the Babysitter's book are sort of a new classic. I guess typically, it would be more traditional novels, but it's summer, it's a "fun" challenge, so let's just go with it!I totally have to apologize to everyone for being so slack this month. It was so much easier to keep up with the challenge points when I was working. LOL. You'd think being on summer vacation would make things easier. I've been running around crazy, trying to keep the boys entertained, getting errands run, and just flat out being lazy!
I hear you on that Amy! If I'm not running errands or visiting family, I'm being lazy by playing games, reading books or ignoring cleaning in general by pacing around to different rooms. :)
Being flat out lazy sounds lovely, Amy! I hope you're enjoying it. :)June N: The Namesake, 291 pages, Multicultural

Maree wrote: "In this case then, I'm going to go ahead and call Lois Lowry's Messenger a classic as well and take 5 points for it as well. :)..."The Messenger is only 7 years old... I definitely think it will be a classic, but I don't know how it could be one yet.
I think my BSC as a classic started an avalanche... I'll go ahead and take back my 5 points so that there are no hard feelings anywhere. I don't want my claiming classic on something that others don't agree with to make the definition of a classic become fuzzy.
BTW, there is a "What is a classic?" discussion board too :)
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
Wow, that's a my bad...I totally overlooked when it was written. I was assuming it came shortly after The Giver, which I would consider a classic. I'll withdraw that as well.I don't think that date alone makes a classic, though. But I also have a different definition of literature than most people in that it doesn't just apply to written work. But this is probably the wrong place to get into this discussion, as you've said, Kellee. :)
We could! I'm pretty much on board with what Teri said on the subject though, highlighting the 'well-written' portion. And with that....I'm finished! :D

Maree you just read one of my favorite books that I read forever ago. How did you like THe Lost Years of merlin?
I think I vaguely remember reading it as a kid, because some parts were hauntingly familiar. I really liked the whole idea of doing a story on Merlin's childhood, since it is something that isn't mentioned much, and it's probably the most interesting part of the story, where he learned his wise and magical ways. It was a good adventure, I liked it. :)

+5 for dystopian genre

Total Points: 170

I agree with Kellee. I think classics would either be the typical (Catcher in the Rye, etc). Modern classics are more like ones we read when we were kids (so at least 10 years older or more?).
Well, if you want to make the term 'modern classics' instead, then it's a little different. But I personally wouldn't put BSC down for having excellent writing, which would be a criteria for me to be a classic. The writing is fine, just not noteworthy enough to be a classic in my book. But we've established that I have kind of a selective book at this point. :)
