Kurt For some reason, I just cannot seem to read any book without printing a full color 2.5"x5" bookmark of the cover of the book I want to read. I find the cover over the internet, download it and print them out. I can't just use any old bookmark or a piece of paper... it HAS to be the book cover! Sometimes I get really irritated when I can't find the cover of the edition I have... so that book goes on the "Do Not Read Yet" shelf.

message 2: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I have nothing to even come close to that. What a brilliant, obsessive idea!

message 3: by Beth (new)

Beth (vanburren) | 69 comments What a cool idea, Kurt! I have card stock that I cut into strips for a bookmark, and I have the name of the author on it along with the name of the series and all the books listed in that series. As soon as I come home with my books, I look them up on fantasticfiction.com to see if the book is in a series and where it's at in that series. Then I make up the bookmark and stick it in the book. After each book I read in the series, I stick the bookmark in the next book and highlight the ones I've read.

Beth that's actually a pretty good idea. :)

message 6: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I don't know this counts, but I often use magazine inserts (only those without scents) that I trim so the print's not too distracting & old file folders that I trim into strips.

message 7: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Also I sometimes cut up Xmas ribbons & use parts of those. They tend not to fall out so easily as bookmarks seem to do with me!

Great way to recycle!!

message 9: by Beth (new)

Beth (vanburren) | 69 comments Jana. . .I actually have to make the bookmarks to keep myself organized. Otherwise, I'd be buying duplicates all the time! LOL

message 10: by Ivonne (new)

Ivonne | 11 comments I don't think it's that strange .. but when I really love a book, I keep it on my night stand even when I'm finished with reading it, just to look at it before I go to sleep and remember it. :)I've had the same 3 books on there for about 2 years now and still haven't replaced them - which means- I didn't find a book so far that I loved more.

message 12: by Bob (new)

Bob Cooley (boblikesbooks) | 16 comments I will sometimes let myself fall asleep with my book in my hands, not unlike a security blanket. I don't know why I allow myself to do this as it will usually cause me to sleep lightly for fear of letting the book drop out of bed and (heaven forbid!) bump a corner or something. But at the same time it somehow brings me comfort. Weird, I know.

As for bookmarks, I like using my kids cartoon flash cards among other things. :^)

message 13: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I also fall asleep with a book in my hands & sometimes another 2 or 3 (or even more) around me in the bed as though they were soft enough to sleep on! But I find it comforting.

And it's funny but when you're a reader sometimes it seems that everything in the world is a potential bookmark!

message 14: by Miss Asima (new)

Miss Asima (missasima) | 21 comments I think the only somewhat odd thing I do is sleep with them. I always sleep better with a book in my bed. :D Of course I'm probably wrong. If you asked someone who knows me they would probably have a huge list of odd things I do.

LOL Thank GOODNESS this question isn't being asked of our friends, huh??!!!

message 16: by Coqueline (new)

Coqueline I don't know if it's considered weird, but every now and then I would pack 10 kilos worth of my books, and send them to Indonesia, to be used for a library.

message 17: by Hadrian (new)

Hadrian (hadrian_gr) I don't think this too bizarre, but I smell them. The older the better, hardcovers are the best. I open the binding and take a big whiff of the insides. It's very relaxing.

I also carry several with me whenever I go on errands and read them whenever I have spare time. It looks a bit odd, but I suppose it's one reason wh I get so much of my reading done.

When I was a kid I liked to design my own bookmarks for certain special books. I'd print them out on the computer and then I'd cut out cardboard from cereal boxes and tape the bookmarks to that. Nowadays I often just use poker cards for bookmarks.

message 19: by Miss Asima (new)

Miss Asima (missasima) | 21 comments @ kaworu. I forgot about smelling them! Lol I do this too all the time.

message 20: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I hadn't even realized smelling them was weird.

Doesn't everyone do this?

;)

Yeah... I do that too! I agree it does have somewhat of a calming effect.

message 22: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) It's the one thing the Kindle really doesn't have.

Maybe they could come up with a special spray, "eau d'ink et papier" or something? :)

I love that idea... a spray that smells like books! They make it for cars, why not? "That New Book Smell", or "That Really Old Book Smell"

I find it comforting to have my books by me when I sleep too! So glad to hear someone else is the same way! Most people look at me like I'm nuts when I say having my books by me comforts me. :O) <3

message 28: by Kurt (new)

Kurt When I read, I always have to at least finish the chapter I am on before I put the book down. If I can't get to the end of that chapter, I have to at least finish a page that ends in a period, and I situate my bookmark facing the page I will read next.

message 29: by Linda (new)

Linda Rowland | 16 comments I sold used books for a time and made my own "quotemarks" which are my favorite quotes printed and laminated. I still use them and find joy in those quotes each time I use one.
On the odd side, I have a friend who does not use bookmarks at all. She remembers where she was. This is very weird to me. I would spend way too much time finding my place again, or more likely give up trying.

message 30: by Darlene (new)

Darlene Grant | 1 comments I determine what books I am going to read in advance. I go in alphabetical order of authors I am currently reading. For example I will read a book from Tammi Hoag, then a book from Stephen King and then a book from Dean Koontz, etc. And then I start down my list again. And I read them in order of the date they were published....Weird I know.

message 31: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 5 comments The strangest things I do with my books.
1)I cannot go to sleep unless i have a book on my bedside table it doesn't have to be the book i'm reading I just have to have one there.
2)I always have to have a book in my car if i get down the street and realize I don't have one I will turn around go home and grab one I hate the thought of being stuck somewhere without a book to read.
3)i always have to have a book in my handbag i will not leave the house without one.
4)I also keep books at my dads because i'm there so often lol I know this is weird but I cant help it....

message 32: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1 comments The strangest thing I do with my books would have to be that I CAN'T break a binding. I feel like I am hurting them if I do. So I can't lend mine to anyone unless I know how they treat books first.
I also have an ongoing list of books I want to read complete with summary, I think it may be like 100 pages on my computer.

message 33: by Louise (new)

Louise | 280 comments Linda wrote: "On the odd side, I have a friend who does not use bookmarks at all. She remembers where she was. This is very weird to me."

I do it too - I sometimes also use a bookmark, but when I was at school, the boys in my class seemed to think it was priceless entertainment to remove my bookmarks and close the book I was reading, if I left it on my desk. So I made a habit of always noticing which page I stopped reading on.

message 34: by Louise (new)

Louise | 280 comments I takes me ages to decide which books to take, when I'm going on vacation. I can move around piles, put them in and take them out (while my husband shouts that we'll only be gone for 1 or 2 weeks).

message 35: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 36 comments 1) I have ritual when I finish a book. I have 3 different apps on facebook and this website that I like to update when I finish a book. Why don't I just stick this site? I have no idea...

2) Every book I finish has to have a book plate in it with my full name in it. I buy bookplates at Barnes and Nobles and have a stack of them sitting on my "Read" bookshelf downstairs.

3) Then I have to shelve the finished book by author on my read bookshelf so that it's alphabatized with the rest of the books that I've read. I get great satisfaction from my bookshelf of all the books I've read.

I don't make my own bookmarks but I do collect them. I have a Barnes and Nobles Teddy Bear that I bought a couple of years ago and he has a back pack. I have all of my bookmarks in the back of my teddy bear and he's right next to my bed, so when I start a new book Teddy has my bookmark covered ;)

Oh my goodness this is EXACTLY how I am! lmbo The sentence MUST end at the page I end on or I have to read another page. I've spent many nights reading longer than I wanted to trying to get to a period at the end of a page! lol

I smell my books. It's not weird. That's why I refuse to get a kindle or Nook...no "book smell"! :O) <3

message 39: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) I have gotten some great ideas here....if I could just get my book organized!!!
I, like most of you, must have books by my bedside. And I always read two at a time. One will be history/biography and one will be what I call light reading such as a British mystery or PG Wodehouse short stories. And I also never put down a book until I have finished a chapter.
So it appears that all readers share the same way in which to spend time with old friends, our books.

Yeah, it drives me crazy sometimes! I'm glad I'm not the only one out there with this wierdness :)

message 41: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) It's probably not that weird in this company, but if a day goes by without my having read anything I consider it a wasted day. And I'm another one who needs an obvious stopping point before I can close the book.

Back to the bookmark theme - I love to stop by the paint department of wherever has a paint department and snaffle a handful of paint chips. They're a perfect thickness for bookmarks, and the long ones are longer than a paperback, so the place is easy to find.

message 42: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 63 comments I use a 2 of Hearts playing card for my book mark. When I read more than one book, which is often, I use a bookmark the bookstore gives me with every purchase. I have a TON of those laying around here!

message 43: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (kathyl123) I am also guilty of having to have a book by my bed and stopping at a chapter. Last night I got comfortable, covers pulled around me and everything. I took my glasses off to put them on my nook and there was no nook there. I got out of bed just to get the nook I left on the coffee table and put it on my nightstand so I can place my glasses on top of it. My husband just shakes his head at me at me now.

message 44: by Veronika (new)

Veronika (vforveronika) The strangest things I do with my books:

1. When I go clothes shopping I always have to look at the clothing tags. I got this really pretty lighting bolt tag on one of my shirts when I first bought it and I loved it so much that I've used it as a bookmark since then. Now every time I go shopping I make sure to look at the tags on clothes to see how pretty they are and look at their designs to see if I can potentially use them as bookmarks. I have a whole collection of them now. RECYCLING!!!

2. I love to smell my books. I like to smell new ones and sometimes the ones I take out from the library.

3. I have a whole box of bookmarks, so when I get a new book to read I must go threw the whole box and pick the perfect bookmark to go with that book. I usually pick ones that are my favorite and that I use often, ones that match the color of the book's cover, etc.

4. When I buy a new book I must write my name and the day on which I bought it on in the back of the book. This is so that years later down the line I can see how long I've had the book for.

5. I don't like my books to get bent up, the spine to split or the jacket cover to have any imperfections. If they do I become saddened, which is why I sometimes regret lending out my books, but I do like to share so I guess it's my own fault. lol

6. I too need an obvious stopping point before going to bed at night. I usually stop at the end of a chapter, but I'm thinking about stopping this habit.

7. If I hated a book or did not finish it due to me not liking it, I must get it out of my presence immediately. I usually keep all of the books I like in my room, but if it was bad I put it on my bookshelf in the hallway because I feel like it will infect my TBR books with its illness causing those books to suck too.

8. I have gotten into the habit of having the book that I am currently reading on my night stand next to me before I go to sleep. It comforts me and I hope that by doing this it will influence my dreams....because I usually don't have dreams : ( .

I'm with you only my book is next to my pillow, ready to pick up in the morning as soon as I wake.
As for a bookmark, anything that is on hand at the time

message 46: by Robin (new)

Robin Gezzi | 4 comments I'm loving the idea of the bookmark with the series listed on it. So gonna have to borrow that one. I loved reading your strange, bizarre things, and I feel as if I don't really have any. I use anything for a bookmark (pens, receipts, newspaper - I've even used another book!).
The only things I feel obsessive about is having all the books I own in a series in the same "type" of book. Like if I buy the first one in paperback, the rest MUST be paperback. Same with hardback.
And I cannot have a book that has the movie cover. Just drives me crazy!

I do too!!! All the books in that series must be in the same format or it will just drive me crazy!

message 49: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) I don't do anything in particular to my books, but I do have certain reading, recording and buying habits. I keep two separate notebooks for "books I have read"(kept in chronological order) and "books I want to read"(kept alphabetically). When my original notebooks wore out, I re-copied everything precisely into new, nicer notebooks. Also, I CANNOT buy or read books with other people's writing anywhere near the text, it drives me crazy. I don't know or care what the previous owner thought, I want my own personal experience.

message 50: by Linda (new)

Linda Rowland | 16 comments Veronika,
I love your number seven. Mine go directly to the FOL book sale box. I hate to think of bad books infecting good books. Now I worry about the books on the to-read shelf. If you don't know you will hate them will they still infect the others???
