Wanted: Reading Buddies
@K.D. If you find another reading buddy for Ulysses I might join in. But only after I've finished the others on the reading buddy list. Yeah I remember thinking I needed to review the Iliad and Odyssey while reading Ulysses, so maybe we need to read Homer first. I'm very familiar with the Odyssey but not so much with the Iliad.
Anybody up for reading the following books with me sometime in April?(1) CUTTING FOR STONE by Abraham Verghese
(2) ROOM by Emma Donoghue
@K.D.~ I want to join you and Kwesi for your Saramago read but I don't have a copy of that book. If I find a Kindle edition, I'll join you.
Monique, yes, please let me know.ROOM? - I read it already. Ha ha. Read my review if you haven't before you get too serious about this.

By the way, when are you planning to read Saramago?
Monique, I asked the Fullybooked if they have a copy of The Gospel According to Jesus Christ by Jose Saramago, they said yes and they sell it for P599! Expensive and they only have this edition. I want the vintage edition. Hmp!
KWESI, I found a Kindle edition already. But if the Saramago read will overlap with our Atwood read (with Tintin and K.D.) I might not be able to catch up. Might conflict with mommy duties. :(

ROOM! If I get hold of a copy, I can join you. :)
I'll join the Lenten read for Saramago's The Gospel According to Jesus Christ. Regarding Ulysses, if anyone wants to sell their copy to me, especially those who didn't enjoy it, that would be wonderful, hehe.
So, who are with me with Saramago?1) K.D.
2) ANGUS
3) KWESI
Monique: it's okay. unless Tintin would like to join us and postpone Atwood?
I'm fine KD. By the way anyone interested to read Alias Grace by Atwood after reading the The Handmaid's Tale?
Kwesi and I planned to read Ayn Rand's Fountainhead :D anybody up for that? Or am I the only one who haven't read the book? Oh well :)
Saramago is already on Monday? I thought it was going to be on Holy Week, hehe. Sabagay, Lenten season na pala. I can only join after April 5 (Kasi wala pa akong copy at bibili pa lang ako, haha). And I'm stuck with my current read. I can only read one book at a time. >.<
K.D. wrote:Ulysses is based on Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. James Joyce uses "recurring" character (started with Balzac) technique here by having Dedalus, the young man in his previous book "A Portrait of a Young Man as an Artist" as one of the protagonists here. I read "Young Man" but not Homer's books. I want an expert opinion (Regine, if you can help), do we need to read Homer first?Haha. I'm not an expert on Ulysses, as I've never read it. It's one of my life goals to one day read it, but I'm not "ready" for it yet. But according to my friend who has studied it for school, YES it is beneficial to read it. The whole book is an alludes to Homer. It might be hard to understand the structure and the events in the book without first reading Homer.
I don't have a copy of Saramago's book yet so I can't join that, sorry! I'm trying to whittle down my bought-books-to-read-pile ahaha.
Kwesi 章英狮 wrote: "I'm fine KD. By the way anyone interested to read Alias Grace by Atwood after reading the The Handmaid's Tale?"I love Alias Grace! I remember reading that book in my dorm as a freshman student. Nakaka-miss.
Okay. Looks like it will be The Handmaid's Tale by Monday and Saramago has to wait till April 5. KWESI: Yes, I am happy to read ALIAS GRACE with you after The Handmaid's Tale witn Tintin and Monique. Will this be like Atwood's Books Festival? Ha ha. I don't mind, I liked her "Surfacing."
So, looks like the schedule will be:
Monday, March 28: Atwood's THE HANDMAID'S TALE
1) Tintin
2) Monique
3) KD
Speed: 2 chapters/day
Monday, April 4: Laclos' DANGEROUS LIAISONS
1) Regine
2) KD
Tuesday, April 5: Saramago's THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JESUS CHRIST
1) Angus
2) Kwesi
3) KD
After THE HANDMAID'S TALE will be Atwood's ALIAS GRACE
1) Kwesi
2) KD
After DANGEROUS LIAISONS will be Chaucer's CANTERBURY TALES
1) Regine
2) KD
Let me know if I missed any book or anybody.
REGINE: Have you read the two Homer? If not, how about us reading them together and prepare for Ulysses?
KRIZIA: Not sure if you want to have a reading buddy for a "light" read. I am not discounting or have nothing against "light" books but the reading buddy should help you in understanding or interpreting the book (two heads are better than one). If it is a light read, then what will you be talking about? I think "light" read will be good for a one sitting or one weekend read while you are mostly lying on bed on a restful Saturday afternoon till lazy Sunday morning. IMO only.
LYNAI~ Great, let me know! :) But I hope it's OK with you if we start that one after my Atwood read with K.D. and Tintin. :)K.D.~ Wow, have you got your hands full or what?! I'd love to join you and Kwesi for Alias Grace, but let me check first how my sked will hold up.
Monique wrote: "LYNAI~ Great, let me know! :) But I hope it's OK with you if we start that one after my Atwood read with K.D. and Tintin. :)"Okay I can wait. I also have pending books to finish. And, I have yet to get a copy of Room. Or maybe, K.D. will be gracious enough to lend me his copy? Heheh...
K.D. I've read your review of Room, and it made me all the more want to read it. Except that this time, I lost the desire to buy my own copy.

Nga ano? Saan na ba yong copy ko? Naku, natapon na yata.
ROOM is not really bad. I was just frustrated. Maybe I set the wrong expectations. It is also a learning experience from me. I no longer, or I should say, rarely, give a 1-star rating. I am kinder to authors now ha ha.
K.D. wrote: Nga ano? Saan na ba yong copy ko? Naku, natapon na yata. "If you get to find your copy, pahiram na lang K.D. :D
I like your review. And I like the comments there too, including those who disagreed with you. I also rarely give 1 star ratings. I just don't know about Room. The reviews I read were all varied from 1 stars to 5 stars, which makes it even more intriguing.
K.D. wrote:REGINE: Have you read the two Homer? If not, how about us reading them together and prepare for Ulysses? K.D. I would love to read Homer with you, but I'm not making any promises for Ulysses YET!
I use to be a mythology geek when I was a kid, and I've read simplified versions of The Illiad and The Odyssey. I can't wait to tackle the real versions! haha.
And yeah, I think there's too much of an Atwood lovefest going on right now. Not much of a fan of her at all, unfortunately!

Can we move it to April 7? Hehe, I might not be able to read on the 5th and 6th, it's my sister's graduation. Uwi pa ako ng province. Yay! My apologies, ang demanding ko yata. I'm serious about it naman and I will commit to it. :)
Krizia, I wish I can, but I already read it last 2 years pa and used it to my book report. I don't know why I chose a chic-lit for a book report. Good luck!
ANGUS: I'm okay moving Saramago to April 7. I browsed the book yesterday, the chapters are not numbered. KWESI: could you please divide the number of pages or chapters so that we will be able to read the whole book starting from April 7 and ending on Easter Sunday? I think I can finish the book within 4-7 days if I read it alone.
KRIZIA: I take it back. Someday, lead me to a good chiclit and I can be a reading partner. Sometimes, I don't think when I write something. Reading it again, my comment to you is rude. Sorry for that.
KRIZIA~ If you find yourself wanting to read other chicklit authors, like Jennifer Crusie or Madeleine Wickham (Sophie Kinsella's other pen name), let me know. ;)
KD, I don't have a copy of the books yet, but don't worry I'll try to look for one this coming Sunday.
KWESI, take your time. You still have more than a week anyway.MONIQUE and TIN, we will be starting Atwood on Monday. I still have to look for my copy but I know it is there under my bed ha ha!
K.D. wrote: MONIQUE and TIN, we will be starting Atwood on Monday. I still have to look for my copy but I know it is there under my bed ha ha!"Picture K.D. crawling and rummaging stuff under the bed!
Picture me lifting the bed! Then I ask the maid to bring a broom and a dustpan kasi di na mawalisan regularly ang under ng bed dahil sa books in plastic containers.

KRIZIA, I'm afraid I've read all of Sophie Kinsella's books already. :( I'll just wait for your next chicklit reading buddy book. ;)
My books to read:Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Witch & Wizard by James Patterson
Obsessed by Ted Dekker
Shadowland by Peter Straub
Don't want to include Scott's books though I have some of them to be still read. I might be teased by someone out there. :DD
Just tell me if you have a copy of any of those books I mentioned above so we can be reading buddies! Yay!
ROLLIE: I can join you in reading Speak, but maybe we can start on the middle of April? I have yet to get my copy on April 10, barring other interruptions. :)
Sure sure Lynai. Yeheeeeyyyy another reading buddy! So when do you want us to start reading that book exactly?
SURE! I have nothing to do with that day. Besides, I'm not that excited to read the book immediately. :D
LYNAI and ROLLIE: Happy to know that another pair of reading buddies has just been formed! Way to go!
K.D. Naiinggit lang po ako. I haven't done much group reading really. Different schedule and different type of books. Having a reading buddy is indeed a good alternative. :)ROLLIE: Pakiremind mo nalang ako ng schedule ha. I always tend to forget. Alam mo na, the hormones...err, the age. :D
Hello po. Just finishing up Hush Hush and Crescendo before I move on to these dystopian books:1. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
2. 1984 by George Orwell
Thing is, I've started on the first one but wasn't motivated enough to finish it, even though I really liked it. So I really do need a reading buddy or buddies, preferably people who can help me analyze these books, kasi I seem to do that a lot. Anyway, I'll understand if no one wants to do some deep reading. :)
Another alternative if no one wants to do some deep analyzing:
1. A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami
2. A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
3. The Devil in the White City: Murder Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson
Thanks a lot in advance. :)

I'm up for Brave New World. However, it has to be around April 15, because I am also joining The Gospel buddies on April 7. What do you think? :)

1) BEN-HUR by Lew Wallace
2) THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JESUS by Saramago
For #2, I already invited Kwesi who is currently enjoying Blindness.
Who's with me in any of the 2 books?
