Nicole Kathryn What book is she on?

message 152: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments I guess she just finished the second one (she started it this morning, so I guess she's a very fast reader).

message 153: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Kathryn Cool! They're pretty fast reads, too. Huge print, ton of dialog.

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments Cool.

Xdyj | 418 comments About 10 years ago my favorite was James Tiptree Jr. a.k.a. Alice Bradley Sheldon. Many of her short stories could be quite depressing and characters often end up dead or worse, but I really enjoyed sad stories then. Nowadays I don't know what is my favorite book or author anymore. I'm not quite sure about your definition of "classic" but some other older sf/f authors I like are Issac Asimov (I, Robot, Foundation trilogy), Arther. C. Clarke (Rama, 2001 series), C. J. Cherryh (Morgaine, Cyteen). As to recent and YA stuff I haven't read much recently but I do really enjoy Harry Potter.

message 156: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments I have been meaning to read I Robot for a while too. I haven't read James Tiptree. Isaac Asimov, Jules Vern, Edgar Rice Burroughs I'd consider classic but we don't have to read classics in this group. I might have meant more of the style but now it looks like some of us like the contemporary YA books (like Harry Potter but everyone reads those so I don't want to read them in the group).

Jdaniels | 27 comments Forgive me if some of these aren't really appropriate - I'm still figuring out just what type of books people in this group like!

Dragonsong (Pern Harper Hall, #1) by Anne McCaffrey Has anyone read any of the Pern books by Anne McCaffery? One of my favorites from that is the Harper Hall trilogy, starting with "Dragonsong"

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine I really like re-told fairy tales. Has anyone read Gail Carson Levine's "Ella Enchanted"? Believe me, it's worlds better than the movie - when the movie came out I ranted and raved and cried because they ruined the book, lol!

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Oz, #1) by L. Frank Baum What about Frank Baum's book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz"? Even if everyone has read that one, not many people realize that Baum wrote another 11 books in the series.

Ozma of Oz (Oz, #3) by L. Frank Baum My favorites from the series is "Ozma of Oz", when Dorothy returns to Oz for the first time, sees the changes that have taken place since her last visit, and revisits with old friends.

The Emerald City of Oz (Oz, #6) by L. Frank Baum Another is "The Emerald City of Oz", where Dorothy, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry all move to Oz to live there.

I've read Ella Enchanted

message 159: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments Most of those are probably okay.

message 160: by Xdyj (new)

Xdyj | 418 comments I've just read a couple of Pern and the first Oz book.

message 161: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Kathryn I've read Ella Enchanted and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

message 162: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments I haven't read any of them. I plan on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz sometime. There was a play last week (of today).

message 163: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Kathryn Cool. It's pretty, good, if I remember right. It's been awhile.

message 164: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments What's nice about the book is they don't sing! I don't like musicals.

message 165: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Kathryn Hahaha, ain't that the truth! ;) Well, sometimes they sing in books, but technically you can't hear them. ;)

message 166: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments LOL!!! At least you don't have to hear them. :)

message 167: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Kathryn Haha! Yep! But sometimes you get so into a book that you can almost hear them singing, just like you can hear them talking. :)

message 168: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments I can't imagine singing unless I've actually heard it before. I image really lame singing.

message 169: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Kathryn That's too bad. My best friend is an amazing singer, so I can hear it pretty well. She's aiming for Juliard.

message 170: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments Cool!

I think most of the YA books I've read are this kind of popular stuff that most people have already read like HP, LOTR and Twilight. I've read a few Asimov and Jules Vern, but haven't read anything by Edgar Rice Burroughs yet. Last semester I read a few cyberpunks like William Gibson (Neuromancer), Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash, Diamond Age) etc., and recently I started reading some fairytale retelling like some works by Angela Carter or Neil Gaiman.

Also do you like Heinlein or Kim Stanley Robinson? Their sf are almost entirely about politics. And do you think Starship Troopers, Ender's Game, 1984, Brave New World or Handmaid's Tale would be appropriate here?

message 173: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments I think those would probably be appropriate. I really want to read Ender's Game (already on shelf) and I want to read 1984 but my dad said it might have some bad content in it but I'm not sure.

message 174: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Kathryn I read Animal Farm, then started reading 1984 but stopped, can't remember why.

message 175: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments I didn't like Animal Farm but I think I'll read it again. I was forced the first time so I didn't like it much. I haven't read 1984.

Starship Troopers was also intended as YA though a bit controversial for it's criticism of democracy. 1984 seems to be quite popular in China these days, probably because we were ruled by a totalitarian government for decades until 1980s. There's a little sex and quite a bit of violence in it, but many YA books nowadays can also be rather bloody, e.g. Hunger Games.

That's very interesting. For some reason I imagine China to be different in every way. I don't know why. Maybe it's because it's on the other side of the world and GREATLY populated. I imagine you guys to read different books over there. I would have guessed maybe old 1800s classics were popular over there too because they're old enough to be spread all over the world, but 1984 for some reason just seems to new. I don't know (I hope I'm not offending you).

Sorry by "popular" I don't mean bestselling or something-the bestseller list in China of foreign books is usually more or less similar to NYT. I just happened to have quite a few friends in China who have read 1984.

message 179: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments What's NYT?

message 180: by Xdyj (new)

Xdyj | 418 comments I mean, bestselling lists here like in Amazon.com or New York Times. The majority of the bestsellers in China are probably still books by Chinese authors, though when some extremely popular stuff like Harry Potter or Twilight released they stayed in top 10 in China for months.

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments Oh... I see.

message 182: by [deleted user] (new)

:P I love international people...they're so...international!

message 183: by [deleted user] (new)

lol. (in a commercial tone) If you like writing stories, I have the group for you! Great, forgot what it was called... one sec...

message 184: by [deleted user] (new)

Future Writers!

message 185: by [deleted user] (new)

Yay! Lemme dial the number on my screen right know!

message 186: by [deleted user] (new)

nope! Everyone else is off topic, so don't worry! A Sci-fi book that I like is the one I'm trying to write. Actually, it's pretty bad, but I still like it! I liked The Tripods Trilogy, and yeah.

No! You're the one who gets us back on topic most the time.

message 188: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Kathryn What were we talking about here again?

message 189: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments What book do you like? I like The Lord of the Rings. :)

message 190: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Kathryn Okay! I like everything I've ever read! Well.. almost everything. Okay, not everything. :)

I love Ella Enchanted! I was sooo disappointed when they made the movie. :( They really could of just kept to the original story and I think people would have liked it. It was very original.

message 192: by Terry (new)

Terry Holmes | 7 comments I like the Sword of Truth series.

message 193: by P.J. (new)

P.J. Johns (PJJohns) | 4 comments Er, let's see ...

Love the Night's Dawn trilogy and Commonwealth series by Peter F. Hamilton, and the Waylander series by David Gemmell. I'd probably say those were my favourite go-to books.

message 195: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments The only one of those I've read is LOTR.... I've never heard of Chronicles of the Black Company.

message 196: by [deleted user] (new)

Connor wrote: "The only one of those I've read is LOTR.... I've never heard of Chronicles of the Black Company."

Me, neither...

My favorite series is definitely:

Artemis Fowl

Bit of sci-fi and fantasy mixed together, and always humorous. :)

message 197: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 1324 comments I haven't read that series....... yet...

message 198: by David (new)

David (whovian223) | 3 comments Definitely check out Jennifer Fallon's books if you like Fantasy. She writes some truly gripping stuff.

Her Second Sons trilogy is what got me into her. Each one is over 500 pages, and I read each book in just over a day (which is super-fast for me).

You really should read it. It's one of my favorites, by a wonderful author. :)
