Should have read classics discussion
What else are you reading?

It was just great, fast paced fun. Adventure, romance, drama, hero in disguise - the book has it all. I devoured it in two days.

Be warned, if anyone wants to read Fanny Hill & has kids of a reading age, when you aren't reading it, do NOT leave it where they can pick it up. Fanny Hill is 18th century porn, but it IS considered a classic, & is on both the 1001 list & the Banned Book list. The Black Dahlia is also a classic & on the 1001 books list. I just started that one.

Just the name tends to think that the book might be rather trippy! LOL!

Currently reading Swann's Way and Middlemarch.
Zuzana and Jim, I have wanted to read both of those books. I'm glad that you liked them. Middlemarch is on my list also, have you read it before?

I have never read anything by George Eliot, but I have Daniel Deronda on my to-read list and Middlemarch sounds equally interesting. Perhaps we could do Middlemarch as a buddy read if you are interested, Lisa?

Sounds good, or as a group read. We actually don't have any new books after November.

I read 'Middlemarch' during my studies, years ago, and it is a great book, well worth a read. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Ah! I found fine free iphone application to record my reading easily. It's "Readlog". I'm glad that it make it easy to jot down my feeling when reading.

I recommend it!

Great idea. That would be a nice way to interact with what you're reading and see how your feelings, insights, and ideas might change throughout the book.

I am "reading" The White Queen for a book club meeting. It is pretty good so far. I love the main character's confidence. I am also about half way through The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference and am enjoying it; although, I think I liked Outliers: The Story of Success better.

And I'm listening to Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford, I'm really enjoying it.

Well done, Holmes!

The image is a statue of Gilgamesh. I don't know the source of the statue, but I'm guessing Assyrian or Babylonian.

Ah, thank you! I'm afraid I'm too caught up with Greek & Roman statues and could only wonder if that was some hero or poet etc. Obviously I need to broaden my horizons to encompass non-greek/roman kings too :S

If you haven't read it, The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest known books and is believed to be over 4000 years old. It is worth the read if you are interested in antiquity.

I studied Classical Civilisations at school & enjoyed it - but we mainly stuck to Ancient Greek and Roman civilisations as that was the syllabus.
I'll bear that in mind for when I need to consider new books, thank you :D

Steve Jobs, Ready Player One, Pearl Jam Twenty, Choices of One, The Complete Mark Twain Collection, and How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age.Ready Player One.

It's also a pretty neat adventure story.

It helps me get through some long drawn out stories.

Lisa, we read The Woman in White last year and it was such fun. It was lengthy but quite worth it! I hope you enjoy it!

I have heard that same glowing(no pun intended) review from everyone that has already read Woman In White! So far, Age of Innocence is cute too.
Oh, I'm also reading The Cartoon History of the United States LOL. I bought it on a lark to see if it would encourage my 13 & 11 year old sons to do better in their history classes at school, but found it such FUN to read that I leave it on the coffee table for anyone to pick up. Everyone that has read even a FEW pages has laughed.

The 'Depths of Winter Russian Lit' poll is for a buddy read. All are welcome to join in, of course, but the idea is that it's a side read. The idea came from one of the threads when a few of us were discussing our love for Russian lit. The idea is that we would read something after the holidays, and there's nothing more perfect for a winter day than a Russian novel. So, the tentative plan is to do the buddy read beginning around January 15th. If the winning book is 500 pages or less, we'll schedule 4 weeks. If it's significantly longer than 500 pages, we'll schedule 6 weeks for the read. If you're interested, go to the poll and vote. At this point, it looks like Dr. Z isn't going to win the DofW read, so keep your fingers crossed for the other poll, if that's what you want to read!

I really enjoyed it, but I love all those kind of books anyway.

We decided to wait on Little Women. The girls want to start King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table instead (and now I'm having serious Monty Python flashbacks).
