Sounds like you have a wonderful list to choose from! TNOTR was a challenge that I never finished! I have it in my not now but later pile! Need some more encouragement for that one!
This thread is better than the recommendations! I have never heard of those books Kyle, but they sound interesting!

I'm reading more books simultaneously than I usually let myself read-- fortunately they're all very different genres! Dracula, A Clash of Kings, Paradise, Miracle of Language
I'm enjoying them all so much, it's hard to pick which one to read!

I just finished Northanger Abbey last night. :) Have Uncle Tom's Cabin on my iBooks app on my phone, & picked House of 7 Gables this morning. Still hacking my way through Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man too. Finding that one a little rough going.

I am reading Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter. I am only on about page 20 though and it seems like I will enjoy it. I love forensic/crime books. I am listening to The Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher. I am having a difficult time getting into it because the quality of the audio book which I downloaded from the library is pretty poor. There's a lot of static and crackling and it's very distracting. Shame too because I love the narrator, Kate Reading. So I might have to actually read that book to determine if I want to read the entire series or not.
I'm also reading a couple of non-fiction books, College-Prep Homeschooling by David P. Bryers & Chandra Bryers and Sidetracked Home Executives: From Pigpen to Paradise by Pam Young, Peggy Jones and I am reading a Bible as well. The MacArthur Daily Bible: Read through the Bible in one year, with notes from John MacArthur by Thomas Nelson, John F. MacArthur Jr.

I'm reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll right now. I grew up on brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Oscar Wilde and Bozena Nemcova fairy tales, I never got to read English and American stories for kids like Wizard of Oz, Jungle Book or Alice in Wonderland. So every now and then I try and read one of these to catch up.
I'm a bit embarrassed but I just finished The Hunger Games (ok, I'm a bit behind the times) and I really liked it. It will be quite an interesting movie if they do it right.Not on my list but I am reading

I gave up on that Furies of Calderon. It was just too annoying to keep listening to and I had no idea what was going on because the crackling and static was so distracting. Now I am listening to Stephanie Meyer's The Host. I listen to it as I do other things since it's not a book I want to use my free time on.
Just started A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. This is a book club read. Have not heard many good reviews about the book; but I am always hopeful!
Currently reading a book called "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", a fascinating account of what happened to a poor 'colored' woman's cells. It is sometimes surreal to think that things like this can happen, but told fairly - some great good came with the downside. Also, reading "9 Stories" - J.D. Salinger.

I always seem to have multiple books going at once also, so it is always nice to have a new club member!:)
I am reading War & Peace but having a difficult time getting interested in it. I have read & enjoyed many classic novels (Count of Monte Cristo, Villette, Jane Eyre, & Wuthering Heights are some of my favorites). So my question is - does it get better? Is it worth the 1100 page read or is it something that people only read because it is a "classic"?

I read it a few years ago and found it really engrossing and definitely worth reading. Some sections were kind of dry, but they didn't detract from how enjoyable the book was as a whole. I can't remember if it took time to get into it or not, but it wouldn't be surprising! You gotta give those long books at least 100 pages or so. I say keep going!

As a group, we read this at the beginning of the year and there were times that it just seemed to drag along, but for the most part I found it pretty engaging. I have never run a marathon, but I figured this was my marathon book and felt good when I finished it! Samantha, you might check out the depths of winter Russian buddy read poll(when it gets to working), that is one of the choices. Plus, there are threads already under the group reads if you want to see what we talked about during that time. We don't close down threads so we would love your input on what you are reading!
Thanks! I will look into the discussion for War & Peace. I am not too far in yet, so I will stick with it - because of your advice & the fact that I cannot allow a book to defeat me ;-) It does seem to be picking up as long as I can keep all these characters straight.
Almost finished the Jane Austen book club, and then I'll start Halloween Party by Agatha Christie :)

If you like John Irving, I'd chance that you'll fall into the love it category.
Stay away from the movie. It's a complete butchering of the story and just a bad movie all around.
I'm reading A Thousand Lives
which is a Goodreads giveaway. So perplexing how people were so gullible right up to committing suicide. Halfway through and just stunned by the ability of this man to control so many lives through drugs, lies and shams.
I just finished "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society." I LOVED it! Would recommend it to everyone. I also really enjoyed reading "Ella Minnow Pea"

I just finished Blankets for a local book club, which was pretty interesting. I need to get started on my classics for the book battle, but right now I'm in the middle of a pretty fun Star Wars book, Vision of the Future :)
I just finished The Scarlet Pimpernel. I loved it. It reminded me slightly of The Three Musketeers, the book I adored when I was a kid.
I'm currently working on The Count of Monte Cristo,loved the movie, figured the book had to be good too.

I didn't finish it. I got about halfway through and decided to read other things, still planning on finishing it though. The story was interesting, but all the extras was overwhelming.

I started Coelho with The Devil & Miss Prym, I'm actually looking forward to some of the rest of his. Miss Prym was a short read, & it was set almost as a fable with a distinct lesson attached to it. Those who really don't care for him should try this one. I liked it, & I'm not even a Christian, although it has distinct morality questions. It's definitely a book that will make you think, but because it's short, it goes pretty easy.
Loved The Handmaid's Tale, although I've liked some of her other things, like Cat's Eye & Alias,Grace better.
I adore Watership Down, always have, even as a girl. The movie made me cry, but it was much better done than it would have been if Disney got hold of it. Now that I have 3 pet rabbits, it's even more relevant to me, LOL.
Ok, I LOVE the Hollows series, LOL. They are fun, sexy, sarcastic, & a good romp.
I read The Mortal Instruments series, & yeah, it was cute, but a little too predictable.
Love P & P, and the movie :) Old Man IS short, & mesmerizing. I ADORE Hemingway. I've read almost everything he's written, including his autobiography, Death in the Afternoon, & the book his son finished & put out after his death, True At First Light The ONLY ones of his I had any trouble staying entranced by were The Green Hills of Africa, For Whom the Bell Tolls, & Farewell To Arms. I have a couple more left to finish him up, then work on the various biographies people have written about him
