^^ THIS sums up the book perfectly. It does take about halfway through when suddenly that lightblub hits and it becomes a truly great read.

Also Evelina - Finnkin is awesome as well.. similar lightblub moment for me in this book...

Oh and I am LOVING 'The Knife of Never Letting Go'.. stayed up way to late last night reading it and going to dive back in later tonight

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Shannen, I'm about to work on my Dreamfever re-read too. But I'm putting a Melina Marchetta book ahead of my re-read. That's how much I love her stuff. But then, it's Dreamfever time!

Ali | 106 comments Just finished The Knife of Never Letting Go... wow... wow.. wow wow wow freaking wow. I cried SEVERAL times throughout the book. Seriously another great recommendation from you all. Had to get book 2 immediately (Thank goodness for insta-buy via Kindle)

Jellicoe Road and now this... think I also got The Hunger Games from this board... Quit throwing all this profound, amazing dystopia at me *ducks*

Not yet, but I've been considering it.

message 4821: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments I can still remember the day almost two years ago when I decided to try The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan and re-discovered what great YA stories there are out there. I think I've only read two or three "adult" books ever since. I'm having too much fun with all the YA stuff and appreciate all the new recommendations I've picked up on here.

Between these and re-reading George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire books, I might just be kept occupied until A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, #5) by George R.R. Martin finally comes out. (It could happen!)

Becca | 1608 comments Emily (Super Reader Girl Reviews) wrote: "I'm trying to read PegasusPegasus by Robin McKinley again, but I think the writing style just isn't a good fit for me. Has anyone here read it yet?"

Hey Emily, I don't know if you got an answer or not, but I've read several Robin McKinley books and her writing style is definitely not my favorite. Most of her books rank around three stars for me. I haven't read that one in particular, but if it's like her others, her writing style can definitely be buggy. The stories are nice, but how they're written rubs me the wrong way.

That was my nickname when I worked at Dark Horse Comics (though it may have actually been "King of Dorks" - either way, it was meant fondly...I hope!) I might have to check that one out. I've noticed it before because of the title but keep forgetting about it.

I've been debating reading these. A co-worker reads them and I've heard alot about them. Everyone says they're excellent. Have you read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, and how would you compare them?

Lloyd | 415 comments Wendy wrote: "I've been debating reading these. A co-worker reads them and I've heard alot about them. Everyone says they're excellent. Have you read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, and how would you compare them? "

I couldn't get into them. I read the first book, but then heard that the series just dries out.

I've read my fair share of fantasy in the past, but George R. R. Martin's books are the first time I have just been blown away. At first, it was rather intimidating because of the long list of characters, but it is a truly great read. He is a gifted, intelligent writer and I would encourage anybody to give the series a try. One of those sagas where people you hate you grow to love later, etc.

Good stuff.

message 4828: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I read like the first 8-9 books in Robert Jordan's, and loved them, but they eventually just lost me. Same with Terry Goodkind's Wizard's First Rule books, (I preferred Jordan's of the two.) It makes me nervous to embark on another Epic Adult Fantasy.

I'll boost it up and check it out.

I read Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth saga. I still have to finish the last two books one of these days. I agree with you that they got stale after about the fourth book. Martin's books are far and above. The worst part is the huge lag of time since the last book. But I'd rather have a quality story over just getting another book out quickly. (But it's going on over six years now.) I have faith that he knows the whole saga and where he's going with it. Just hoping he lives long enough to finish it!

Lloyd | 415 comments Heidi I wrote: "Yup there are vamps."

Ugh. May have to re-consider that series then. Sorry, but vampires are just (for me) booooooring.

(So there goes Twilight and the other forty different series out there.) :P

Heidi Kourtni wrote: "Ugh Heidi you are such a hater! Yeah there are vampires but it's not about them at all. I recommend MI Lloyd!"

Well I didn't want him to think the series is for everyone should he decide he does not like it once he reads it. I really do hope he likes it more than I did. I wasn't trying to be mean about it.

message 4842: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Dec 21, 2010 02:00PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Vampires appear in the series as minimal side characters, but are not the focus.

The world is built around a half angel race (nephilim) called Shadowhunters. The hunters are essentially demon killers.

The strong points of the series are a ton of snarky humor (Clare writes it in spades) and a cute, forbidden love story. The romance is definitely a main focus of the story, but I do know some males that enjoy the series in spite of it because there is action and adventure.

The main weakness of Clare's writing style is a lot of excessive world building/overdescriptiveness (which is why I think Heidi didn't like it, iirc?). It never bothered me, but I give Clare credit for improving more with each book.

Okay, I guess I approve of you finishing up Chaos Walking first. LoL. Those books are pretty amazing.

message 4844: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Hey what can I say? When I love a book I am very vocal and when I really dislike a book I am not shy either. Luckily for me since I joined this group I have found a lot more books I love than hate :)

Not to mention I still need to finish Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman one of these days too.

Arrgg!!!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Unwind has a great last few chapters.

I agree with everything you've said Stacia. I think the snarky humor is what made me like the series so much.

message 4850: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Yes Lloyd you must finish the Chaos Walking trilogy first. Also, I liked Unwind (4 stars). Stacia is correct about MI author's writing style being the downfall part for me - it was too wordy for my tastes and reminded me too much of Stephanie Meyers writing style. In fairness I can not speak about the entire series because I only read book one.
