Michelle (michellezink) | 168 comments I'm wondering if the publisher didn't pick up The New World. A lot of authors I know release work themselves as ebooks if their publishers don't pick something up - especially if it's a book their readership really wants and is asking for. Weird, though, that they wouldn't pick it up. It seems like such a popular series...

Glad you're enjoying Prophecy, Anna! Hope you enjoy it, too, Carmel. I should tell you guys that Alice beat out Lord Voldemort in Canada's Teen reads Award for Best Villain. She's scaaaaary twisted!

What I find strange is that the book isn't even mentioned on the author's website. Anyway, I am reading book two The Ask and the Answer and I love it. Luckily, there is still book three before I really need to stress out about my lack of access to the prequel...although I did buy my husband an Ipad for Christmas...I could swear off my hatred of technology long enough to download the app... :)

I just finished the book. It was very lovely. I can not wait to buy the second book!

Michelle (michellezink) | 168 comments I just finished reading Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly and HIGHLY recommend it. It was beautifully written, fascinating, and pretty heartbreaking at times. The voice was SO well rendered that I cared about Andi from page one.

*full disclosure; Jennifer and I have the same agent, but this has NO bearing on my love for this book. It's been a long time - probably since Finnikin - that I've been able to recommend a YA book so strongly. I hope you guys get to read it!*

That IS weird. The author's site isn't run by their publisher, is it? Because if it is and the book isn't being released by them, that would explain the lack of mention. If the author runs his own site, though, I don't know why it wouldn't be listed. Very strange... I have to read these books. My daughter loved the first one (and we own it) but I just haven't gotten to it yet.

So glad you enjoyed Prophecy up to the end, Anna!

What were the other two? I didn't read Incarceron because I fear I'll end up on the "didn't like it" end of things.

message 4717: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments I liked Incarceron. I think some people didn't like it because it was really fast-paced and not really character driven, or at least the characters didn't feel fully developed until like 3/4ths the way through the book. I think I'm confusing myself. My view was that the book was more about the story than it was about the characters, which is why some people wouldn't like it.

message 4718: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellezink) | 168 comments Honestly, they were probably the adult books The Passage by Justin Cronin and The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. I tend to read more adult books these days than YA. YAs starting to feel derivative to me...

I can see where you'd feel that way. The world was very complex. Very... alien, I guess you could say. And because the book is more plot-driven than character-driven, you can't really put your focus there when the world feels overwhelming.

I know people who loved it and people who hated it. I just happen to be in the former category!

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Michelle wrote: "Cassi wrote: "I really enjoyed Incarceron. It was a bit more about the world than about the characters, potentially because the characters level of knowing himself...."

what? they're making it into a movie? I didn't know that.

I also liked Incarceron. It's not a best book of the year or anything, but it was still enjoyable I thought. I am planning to read Sapphique.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Michelle wrote: "Cassi wrote: "I really enjoyed Incarceron. It was a bit more about the world than about the characters, potentially because the characters level of knowing himself...."

I'm not a Twilight person so I don't know how to fill about that...not because I dislike Taylor Lautner or anything but because I haven't seen him act since Sharkboy. But if he's attached it gives the movie a high chance for sucess. And I can see him as Finn but please let him keep his shirt on through most of the movie (he should not just become the tweet fabio).

I think Incarceron could work pretty well as the movie as long as whoever creates it has a good artistic vision as far as specific effects and creating Incarceron itself.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments hmmm. I just checked IMDB and they have the movie listed as "in development" with a 2013 release date. I don't have IMDB pro or I could check the "tentative" cast list.

Personally I like Taylor Lautner as an actor. I'm not saying he's going to be winning an academy award anytime soon, but he's not a bad actor and will grow with time. That being said I'm not sure about him playing Finn. Maybe I guess. I'm trying to remember how Finn is described in the book.

message 4726: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments I think Incarceron would make a great action movie. It was extremely action oriented, so if the visuals are done right, it could be spectacular. As far as Taylor goes, I think he's a decent actor and from what I remember of Finn, he kinda fits the bill, though I imagined Finn pretty emaciated and...harder, maybe tougher, I don't know the word I'm searching for at the moment. Taylor still looks like a little boy to me, but makeup can do a world of wonder.

message 4727: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Now that I'm thinking about it, Incarceron almost read like a movie script. It was extremely action-driven. Which, in my book, means it will probably translate pretty well to the big screen.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments The action is why I think Incarceron could work even better as a movie (which sounds strange considering I don't think Hunger Games will work very well as a movie).

For some reason Finn is tan with dark hair in my mind, but much skinnier and less buff than Taylor.

message 4729: by BirdiesBookshelves (new)

BirdiesBookshelves I am more interested in this series than I thought I would be. I just finished The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1) by Kelley Armstrong and gave it 4 stars. I have just started The Awakening (Darkest Powers, #2) by Kelley Armstrong .

message 4730: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellezink) | 168 comments I've started ranking books that are very original higher on my list, because its seems like more and more, originality is truly hard to come by. One of the reasons I loved Incarceron so much is because it was utterly unique. I loved it's complexity and the fact that Fischer created such a different, fully-realized world.

Non-fantasy books are understandably more character-centric. There are only so man plots, really, when we're mirroring real life in fiction (strange how alike the human experience is across culture, religion, etc., isn't it?).

But when it comes to fantasy, I'm really looking for something original in a book to call it one of my favorites. I'm tired of the same old thing played out over and over. It's getting to be like Mad Libs, i.e. insert supernatural creature here, insert names for love triangle here...

Or maybe I'm just cranky!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) It's one of the better YA pnr's. I found it to be a little bit more mature than most of the others, and the heroine is just as tough as the guys (she's training to be a guardian). The maturity factor could possibly come from the fact that the author has written 2 other adult series. There are actual sex scenes, smoking, drinking, etc. in these books, but it's done in a realistic way and not for the sake of shock value.

Book 1 is a little slow, but once you get past that one, books 2 through 6 are all extremely good.

Beware it is a cliffhanger ending (which we all love around here). p.s. The reason I know I was not really into the book is because it has been a few months now and I haven't had to rush to get to book two to resolve the cliff hanger.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Oh, I've only got 50 pages left now and I already know exactly what I'm going to say in my review. That is unless there is some earth shattering revelation in the next little bit. Unfortunately I can see where this is going.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I was trying to do Iron Kissed (Mercedes Thompson, #3) by Patricia Briggs on audio and had to quit out because the female doing the voice kept trying to do a man's German accent and it sounded like a fake Arnold Schwartzenagger (sp).

I'm scared to try another audio now.

Heidi Stacia don't give up on audio! Please please please. Go to the audiobook thread to find some excellent recommendations. I loved the Fever series on audio as well as the Black Dagger series on audio,
if that is your type of book (I have not read the Mercedes series, so I was trying to think of what might be similar).

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) What happened was that I found myself unmotivated to keep up with the series but so many people had said it was good, that I thought I'd try a different format to see if I liked it better.

I like both YA and adult, and have been known to read everything from sci-fi to fantasy to pnr/uf to historicals. I'm not as big of a fan of contemps though, so the story would have to be good.

I already own Fever and BDB in ebook, but I'll check out the thread for sure. It's been a challenge to find good ones at my library that they'll let me download to my computer in mp3 format. I want something that will go right onto my player.
