I'm a big fan of the dark books like Hunger Games or Strange Angels and, of course, Neal Shusterman.

I love dark books too :) Although I wasn't really into Hunger Games and I haven't read Strange Angels yet …

Have you read the Chaos Walking books by Patrick Ness? They're great … also dark. :)

Wendy, I found it, if you go to Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon and scroll down to the review by Holly posted Feb 18, 2008. There are like 75 comments on the review, when I go to the Outlander page it is the second review, so I would assume it would be on your page too. It starts out with:

How To Commit Adultery Without Being a Cheap Slutty Whore: A Q&A by Diana Gabaldon

Q: I love my husband but I'm feeling kind of restless. But adultery is wrong. So what do I do?
A: Easy! Go back in time!

Q: What do you mean, Ms. Gabaldon?
A: If you go back in time, your husband hasn't been born yet. So you can have wild and crazy .................................................................
Make sure you click MORE and read it all. You'll see why I asked you if you wrote it, it is hilarious!!

Brigid, have you tried Strange Angels (Strange Angels, #1) by Lilith Saintcrow yet?
or The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff . The Replacement was quite weird even for me.

message 4508: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawnb2) | 29 comments I'm currently reading Royal Blood (Vampire Kisses, #6) by Ellen Schreiber then Love Bites (Vampire Kisses, #7) by Ellen Schreiber

message 4509: by Sara (new)

Sara (rose081900) | 177 comments I finished Jealousy (Strange Angels, #3) by Lilith Saintcrow and I have no idea what I'm going to start next. It's really sad that I have to wait until April 2011 until the 4th book comes out.

message 4510: by Sara (new)

Sara (rose081900) | 177 comments I decided to read Candide by Voltaire because I've had so many people recommend it to me over the last few days. It's also a pretty short books so I should have it read in no time.

message 4511: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I've started Lover Unbound... acutally by started I mean I'm already half way through.

I have Knife of Never Letting Go at home too, along with Everlost and Everwild. Um... I have Graceling too... I have all these great books on my shelf that I will get around to reading here soon. I'm trying to prevent myself from ordering Saving Francesca and Looking until I get some others read...

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Listening to: Under the Jolly Roger: Being an Account of the Further Nautical Adventures of Jacky Faber

Still technically reading Gregor the Overland though honestly I haven't had time since I started it. Hate being that busy.

I'm jealous, you have some good books to read!

message 4514: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) At last count I had 29 books physically on my shelf to read. From Stolen: A letter to my captor by Lucy Christopher through Stephen King's It, lol. I really don't need to order more books... I really don't need to order more books... I really dont...

LOL, that's my mantra because those two Melina Marchetta books are in my shopping cart on Amazon.

message 4515: by Traci (new)

Traci just finished The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner . I thought it was pretty good, but the ending seemed extremely rushed, IMO.

Think I'm going to start Matched (Matched #1) by Ally Condie on my break at work. I've heard really mixed reviews on this one.. so I guess we'll see.

message 4516: by Amy (new)

Amy (3601144-amy) | 41 comments I'm halfway through Glass (Crank, #2) by Ellen Hopkins , but paused on reading it so I could read the VA books. I'm reading: Shadow Kiss (Vampire Academy, #3) by Richelle Mead right now. I'm trying to get the first 5 read by Monday Dec. 13. That's when I go meet Richelle again! :)

Brigid, I asked my librarian for a recommendation on a book similar to something Neal Shusterman would write and she told me to try The Marbury Lens by Andrew Smith .

message 4521: by Sara (new)

Sara (rose081900) | 177 comments I'm still reading Candide by Voltaire but only a little bit here and there. I also took it upon myself to start reading Reaper by Rachel Vincent while I'm at it. If I'm going to read a classic might as well read something else along with it.

Cassi I liked the third Jacky audiobook better than the second. Hope you do too. p.s. I am about 3/4 of the way through the fourth book on audio. I am bummed because my library does not have the remaining books on audio :(

Brigid ✩ | 135 comments Amanda wrote: "Brigid, I asked my librarian for a recommendation on a book similar to something Neal Shusterman would write and she told me to try The Marbury Lens.

Hmmm I've never heard of it until now. But it looks good! I just requested it from the library. Thanks for telling me! :)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments The second book got better like halfway through when she stopped crying all the time. So far I'm enjoying the 3rd. It seems like there are a lot of sketchy sketchy men in Jacky's day, or she just draws them.

These are audiobooks that I would invest the money in buying. I actually went to Barnes and Noble when I was in a bigger town recently BUT their selection was pathetic. All like James Patterson and none of the really really good audiobooks I've listened to. I was going to buy the 3rd Jacky Faber book (because halfway there I finished and still had a long drive back) but it was pretty dismal selection so I went without.

message 4527: by Heidi (new)

Heidi They are worth having Cassi as the narrator is excellent. I actually bought the 3rd book through Audible, so I have it on mp3 anytime I want it. I may have to buy the audio for books 5-7 that way too.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I would seriously pick audiobook based on narrator. They make the book! Seriously I would listen to other books just because I know how talented this narrator is.

message 4529: by Mindy (new)

Mindy (mindylu) | 82 comments I am so happy the Jacky is catching on in everyone elses life too. When I joined this group nobody had read the series. She is my favorite character ever. I have read them and listened to them. I like them both ways. I can tell you though many libraries have it where you can check out the MP3 online. At least in Utah they do. I am sad they don't have #8 on audio yet so I will have to read it first. Keep me posted on how you are likeing them, especially when you get to Mississippi Jack! Happy reading (or listening).

message 4530: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Mindy thanks for recommending Jacky to us! I thought the 7th book was going to be the last one???

message 4531: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Cassi wrote: "I would seriously pick audiobook based on narrator. They make the book! Seriously I would listen to other books just because I know how talented this narrator is."

Yes. This is why I feel bad when people try out audiobooks that have narrators who lend nothing to the book and then based on that they decide they don't like audio. A great narrator can add SO much more to a book. For instance, the Georgia Nicholson series is actually better on audio IMO.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I've only listened to Jacky Faber books on audio so at this point I can't imagine reading them. You'd miss out on the whistle and the songs. The very distinctive way she says "uh oh" when things are going wrong. A good narrator brings so much to the books. I had someone criticize me for giving a book a bad review based on audio. Based on their comments (about someone just reading the book without personality) you could tell they don't know anything about audiobooks.

If I ever have children I plan to use audiobooks such as the Jacky series when driving them around. I think kids would find audiobooks exciting and it might encourage them to read. Audiobooks are their own art form, a bit like the lost radio dramas. The story is important, but the narrator is JUST as important, sometimes more. (Just like a good actor can sometimes redeem a bad movie).

Mindy (mindylu) | 82 comments The 8th book is already out. I got it a while ago but I just started reading it last night. I sure it will be good!

message 4534: by Capability (new)

Capability | 4 comments Hi - I am new to the group and love YA fiction - I pretend (slightly) to be pre-reading for my children but really, I just like the books. I just read The Hunger Games series and am moving on to Percy Jackson and the series after that. Have only read paper books but looking forward to trying out an new e-reader - will let you know how it goes.

Sara (rose081900) | 177 comments I finished Reaper by Rachel Vincent , very short book and it just leaves you hanging but it is well written. I'm still slugging along reading Candide by Voltaire which may take me a little bit since I'm not use to the writing style, it's good, but hard to keep my attention after a little bit. I'm not sure what I'm reading next.

This was a longer book than the first two, but I read it in like two days because I loved it.

message 4545: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Just started The Ghosts of Ashbury High (Ashbury/Brookfield, #4) by Jaclyn Moriarty on audio. This one is going to take awhile as it is 15 hours long and I only listen to my mp3 player for about 15-20 minutes per day!

message 4546: by Arphaxad (new)

Arphaxad | 335 comments Just finished Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead , and was pretty disappointed with it, sadly. Couldn't stand any of the characters (especially not the MC) and spent most of the time yelling at them in utter exasperation. Tis a shame, I was really looking forward to this one because of all the great reviews! Alas, taste will differ.

Now moving on to White Cat (Curse Workers, #1) by Holly Black , and reading a bit of Mercy Thompson to cheer me up :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Book 1 of VA was weak compared to the rest of the series. I only moderately liked it, but loved the rest of the books.
