Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I have a 25 minute commute PLUS sometimes I have to drive anywhere up to 2 hours & back to get to an event/training I'm doing for my job (Girl Scouts).

I'm not saying audiobooks are for everyone. But those who listen to them are not just "lazy" or "casual" but very avid readers who are looking to find ways to read even more.

I would start with a really excellent audiobook on a day when you have to drive maybe further. I am the Messenger is recommended.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) We have to drive to from Michigan to Florida in Februrary so maybe we'll try then.

i agree with everything you said.. :)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) The good audiobooks are SO worth it. Some aren't great and leave you bored. But when you get one that makes you like a book that you would otherwise hate, it makes you LOVE audiobook. Try starting out with one that has won awards or maybe a bestseller (audiobook, not physical book).

message 3855: by Heidi (new)

Heidi The Help on audio is the best one I have ever listened to. Other than that, all the Harry Potter books on audio are excellent as well.

message 3856: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I like Harry Potter... I might start with that one.

Heidi Wendy wrote: "I like Harry Potter... I might start with that one."

Yes!

message 3858: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (peanutty222) | 529 comments I finally finished Lover Eternal. Yaay. On to #3.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I really liked "Secret Life of Bees" on audiobook and its not my normal type of book. The narrator really sounded like a Southern teenager.

message 3860: by Isamlq (new)

Isamlq | 177 comments Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman ... liking it so far..

message 3861: by Book (new)

Book (bloodwitch) | 90 comments Just finished Behemoth (Leviathan, #2) by Scott Westerfeld and it was just as amazing as Leviathan, but god dammit why'd it have to have such a fugtastic cover?! Waiting to buy a different edition... :(

i was thinking just that.. if i were to buy a book based purely on its cover, id skip this... whats it about?

message 3863: by Book (new)

Book (bloodwitch) | 90 comments Leviathan (Leviathan, #1) by Scott Westerfeld the first had a beautiful cover though ;)

It's a steampunk AU-WWI following prince Alek (Austro-Hungary) and Deryn (a girl passing as a boy) in the Royal Air Navy

It's definitely one of my favourite series

message 3864: by Isamlq (new)

Isamlq | 177 comments i have leviathan, havent read it yet though.
see, the word "steampunk" intimidates the hell out of me.. i know, clockwork angel falls under that genre but i feel like it might not be my thing...

message 3865: by Rach (pagesofpiper) (last edited Oct 17, 2010 12:59AM) (new)

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) I'm currently reading The Puppet Master by Joanne Owen

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, # 1) by Cassandra Clare is actually pretty awesome if you've read and liked Immortal Instruments, it shows a different perspective on the world Cassandra Clare has created.

message 3866: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Cassi wrote: "I really liked "Secret Life of Bees" on audiobook and its not my normal type of book. The narrator really sounded like a Southern teenager."

The narrator is Jenna Lamia and she is my favorite female narrator. She also narrated The Help, Shiver, and Saving Ceecee Honeycut.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Glad to know her name. I'll know when I pick up books with her that's she's excellent. Narration can really add so much to a book.

And on the Steampunk topic. I think the word scared me at first because its something I wasn't initiated into and heard about a lot before I read. But Soulless, Blameless and Heartless are thrown in that category and I love them. I think like any genre it varies.

message 3868: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'm not even sure what "Steampunk" means for a genre.

message 3869: by Lori (new)

Lori (tyme2read) I finished Infinity (Chronicles of Nick, #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon last night and tonight I amgoing to start Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, # 1) by Cassandra Clare

Peep, I think it was you that asked me to let you know how Infinitywas? I liked it. It was a little slow int he start but the ending definately left me with lots of questions for Book 2 Invincible (Chronicles of Nick, #2) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

message 3870: by Book (new)

Book (bloodwitch) | 90 comments Please don't judge steampunk based on Clockwork Angel! (I love the former, was not a fan of the latter)

Leviathan is different than a lot of others because there's the side (Clankers) that build all sorts of crazy machines, but there's the Darwinists that are creating their own beasties :P

Anyway, steampunk is usually a historic setting (Victorian), typically AU, with fantasy and machinery all meshed together. So really just the union of new and old technology

I can't believe you liked it, though I guess it wasn't that bad. I'll have to go back and read my review to see what I thought. How'd you like her toning down the bad guy language?

message 3872: by Lori (new)

Lori (tyme2read) Peep, Maybe that is hte difference. This is the first book I have read by her. I have a bunch of hers on my TBR list but haven't had the chance to actually read it.
I am intrested to see what happens in the next book witheh more adult characters in the book. This is a book I can see my son liking in a coupole years. He would probably like it now if I were to read it TOO him but we have other books for that right now.

Oh, that was my first book by her too. I was thinking and I guess it's the weird mix of mid grade and zombies. And big, bad guys threatening to kick someones butt. That's never intimidating. Ever. :D

I loaned it to a friend and I can't wait to grill her over every single chapter as she reads them!

message 3876: by Lori (new)

Lori (tyme2read) Peep, It was definately different for me to read a book with the main characters so young, lol. Especially a book with a male lead. I do have to admitt after a couple of the books I have read oer the past couple months it was nice to have less swearing, lol. Wierd but nice, lol

message 3881: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. I finally finished both The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4) by Rick Riordan and The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #5) by Rick Riordan today and i'm so sad the series is over. I just had to start The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus, #1) by Rick Riordan and its awesome so far.

I'm also reading the Vampire Academy series. I've only read the first 2 so far but they're not too bad.

message 3882: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I love the Percy Jackson books, I loved how The Last Olympian ended. I bought the Lost Hero too, but haven't started it yet.

message 3883: by Lori (new)

Lori (tyme2read) Well, I didn't get a chance to start Clockwork Angel last night and I Heart You, You Haunt Me by Lisa Schroeder came inteh mail today so I started it while waiting for the boys at the bus stop. It will be a quick read for sure then I WILL start Clockwork Angel for sure!

Dawn (dawnb2) | 29 comments I finished Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #3 ) by Rick Riordan last night. Starting The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4) by Rick Riordan tonight

message 3886: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. I finished The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus, #1) by Rick Riordan and it was just as good as the Percy Jackson books. There's a great new set of demigods from a place I would have never expected.

message 3889: by Julie (new)

Julie | 7 comments I loved the Hunger Games trilogy!!! It was picked by my book club and I was uncertain, but then I was hooked!!! :) Enjoy the trilogy!!

I have recently been reading books by Sarah Dessen. Over the past week I have read, "This Lullaby," "Someone Like You," and "The Truth About Forever." I have really enjoyed these books!! I had not read any books by Dessen before this week and I am looking forward to reading more of her books!

message 3890: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I loved the Hunger Games!!

message 3891: by Lori (new)

Lori (tyme2read) Well, I Heart You, You Haunt Me took me about 3 hours to complete. It flowed nicely.

message 3892: by Monica (new)

Monica (nutz4reading) | 33 comments I just recently read Open: An Autobiography and now I am reading Outside Wonderlandalong with a few other books.

message 3893: by Traci (new)

Traci Finished Reckless (Reckless Series, #1) by Cornelia Funke this morning and it wasn't really my style. It was really choppy and fast-paced and I didn't feel there was enough description. The story was okay, but nothing I'd go raving about to friends and family.

Started Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry, #1) by Simone Elkeles this morning and I know that there are a lot of fans in this group, so I'm pretty excited.

message 3894: by Marisa (new)

Marisa (murta) | 2 comments I re-read "Hush, Hush" by Becca Fitzpatrick yesterday and am half-way finished with the sequel "Crescendo". They are amazing books!

RomanceNovelNews.com (RomanceNovelNews) | 13 comments Reading "Jane", "Nightshade" and "Bloodthirsty".
Jane by April Lindner Nightshade (Nightshade, #1) by Andrea Cremer Bloodthirsty by Flynn Meaney

I have Open - have not read it yet.

Eden Silverfox (tsalagi_writer) | 135 comments I'm currently reading The Secret Sister and the Silver Knight by Christine E. Schulze. It's really good so far.

message 3898: by Lani (new)

Lani (crahfty) | 253 comments I'm currently reading Return to Paradise and loving it! It's a cute light love story that is holding my attention splendidly.

I'm also trying to slog through Covet by J.R. Ward. I really liked her Black Dagger Brotherhood series and this Fallen Angels series is set in the same place with a few crossover characters. So far it's hard to get into because I keep waiting for the Brothers to make an appearance, lol

message 3899: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (marcher08) I just started Thomas Riley by Nick Valentino . This was a great little find. I was interested in trying the steampunk genre and this looked like one the whole family would enjoy. (Yes, sometimes we all read the same book. You know the family that reads together.....???) So far it is very appropriate for 11, 15 and 40+. To add interest we actually met the author, Nick Valentino, at the Southern Book Festival in Nashville, TN. He was dressed in full steampunk regalia and he really got us excited about his book and steampunk. He signed our book also. Neat!
