It is gorgeous. I don't normally do poetry either, but this a book in verse done right.

Regina (reginar) Catie, it has been compared to A Monster Calls, which is understandable but the books are very different. My husband is from Mexico and I have spent time living there and visiting, reading a book written by someone whose first language is spanish makes a huge difference in how she incorporates culture and spanish words to her text. I am not knocking authors who attempt to cross the cultural lines, I think it is awesome that they do - -but often words that don't have signficance are the ones translated into spanish and the way it is done it is not authentic. But McCall incorporates language and culture in such a seamless way, she incorporates them into her story in the way real people incorporate them into their life. She has these amazing descriptions of making food, of crossing the border and visiting "home". I may read this book again. It is about a mom dying, yes, but it is also about so much more. Sorry to gush. I just loved it. I really seek out books like this, ones written by Mexican American authors that write about their experiences. I am so glad I found this.

Regina (reginar) Loved it. I am sitting here stressed that it is not getting enough exposure. I may talk to my daughter's language arts teacher (middle school) and suggest attempting to incorporate it. I am sure teachers love that, nagging parents suggesting that they read this book.

Lloyd | 415 comments Seeing everybody post makes me wonder if I'm the slowest reader on Earth. I thought I was really plowing through 11/22/63 by Stephen King , considering I'm almost finished and am lucky to sneak an hour or two to read every day. But then I look on here and people are posting left and right - "Just finished A, B, and C and am going to start D!"

Ah well. Like I tell my speedy reading wife, "It's not a race. I read for the joy of the story."

But still... :P

I hope everyone had a great and happy Thanksgiving!

I lived in Phoenix for about 17 years. Strangely, I haven't missed it at all. My wife still pesters me about moving back there, but I really have little interest. After living in Portland for so long, when I last visited Phoenix, my lungs quickly told me how terrible the air quality is there. *cough* *hack*

Yes I haven't been around hardly at all, I blame school, they keep you busy with homework. Gag me.

Regina (reginar) I have moved on to the audio of The Ask and the Answer (Chaos Walking, #2) by Patrick Ness , I now understand what you all meant about the series getting better and the narration improving. I liked it alot before, but now it is just amazing.

Lloyd | 415 comments Just made my way back to Young Samurai The Ring of Fire (Young Samuri, #6) by Chris Bradford and have to say that this is a series and author that is deserving of a wider audience. Yes, I am a bit biased about the subject matter, having a fondness for feudal era Japan, but this is such a fun, adventurous, series I can't see why it shouldn't enjoy Rick Riordan-sized success. Once you get past the first book (which was just okay - even to me), it just gets better and better. Vivid characters, intense plot lines, action, intrigue.

I guess I need to start blogging or something, huh? :P

Regina (reginar) Has anyone else read Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1) by Susan Beth Pfeffer ?

I need to discuss some things and I am trying to find people who have read it. :)

It is okay so far, likely a 3.5 star book, not sure if I would recommend it as a great YA apocalypse book but I am only 45% in. It is interesting to see how one family prepares for the what people anticipate will be the deprivation that is about to happen.

I loved this book series and have recommended it to several of my students. I haven't had any yet who didn't like it.

message 11683: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I just read your review Jen. Your review states precisely what I feel like I should be doing. I like a lot about the book thus far, I just would love more information about the town, the other characters, and the world wide situation. But I think the readers are not getting that information, because the protagonist doesn't have it.

I'm an enormous fan of The Hunger Games. Not a bandwagon-jumper.
They're amazing. I'm too lazy to write more, I just finished a review for the first book.

Regina (reginar) Lol. :) I did the audio a few weeks ago and I think I listened to it non stop. I immediately checked out her other 3 books from the library. I had a GR friend who gave it one star and I commented in her review. So that may be where your impression came from. :)

Catie I looked at my status updates. I had one comment where I said to a friend that I did not like the theme (generally speaking) (view spoiler) and also a status where I was critical of something Brimstone did. So that is probably why you thought I had a negative take on the book. :) Sorry to confuse you.

I think I am the only one in the world who really didn't care that much for Hunger Games and never finished the series, though I admit I will probably watch the movie cause it looks cool! Have you all seen the newest full length trailer for it..it was on Breaking Dawn when I went and seen it. :)
