What do you think so far of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children?

message 11302: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Started Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne because it sounds like the right fit right now.

And listening to Three Bedrooms, One Corpse (Aurora Teagarden Series #3) by Charlaine Harris . I'm enjoying these mystery audiobooks but I keep thinking "Why am I smarter than all these characters?" Seriously call the police people, don't do their job yourself. (This is in response to the one I just finished, not this one. Talking about Sweet and Deadly by Charlaine Harris )

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Hounded was a good one. Very gender neutral, with a lot of humorous touches. And the guy was a casual type of guy who just happened to be badass on the side.

Just started but the opening has already got me excited. Sounds like my type of guy to spend a book with.

Any romance in it? I like books to have at least a little.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Not really, but he does have a bit of an attraction to a woman and I think there's a chance for romance in the future. My guess is that even if there is a romance, it will be very downplayed.

The dog gets some play though, haha. I love the interactions between the dog and his master.

I like romance too, but didn't miss it at all in this book. The story was entertaining enough to keep me interested, and the guy was swoon worthy in a very cool and not overdone way.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments So popping back in. Did you guys follow the National Book Award YA category DRAMA of this week? It makes me mad. It also makes me want to kick the whole committee in the backside.

Just ready Lauren Myracles Q&A about the whole ordeal and want to hug her:
http://www.vanityfair.com/online/dail...-

Also worth reading is Libba Bray's blog where she doesn't hold back http://libba-bray.livejournal.com/622...

message 11308: by Stormi (StormReads) (new)

Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) Cassi, you always have all the great gossip...lol.

Wow, I can't believe they did that to her, I have never read any of her books but that is still such a horrible upset.

message 11309: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I was checking twitter when the story broke. Got to see all the initial agent/author reaction.

Was very upset myself. The National Book Award people apparently have no class.

message 11310: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments That was my first reaction Catie! Kinda a big epic "Screw you awards committee" but it doesn't appear to be happening.

I downloaded Shine when the one stupid article (forget which publication, their are so many anti-YA articles nowadays) but I never got around to reading it. Its sitting with those impulse buys on my Kindle.

I can't believe the award committee acted like that. You make a mistake you just deal with it. Let her be nominated just don't give her the award. Clearly she was in the conversation at some point because Shine/Chime is similar, but the author names are not. Seriously I took like 2 PR classes and everyone knows you don't make a PR crises work with stupid antics like that.

message 11311: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I just don't follow the committees logic at all. It baffles me completely. It sounds like someone on the committee threw a hissy fit and I don't even understand why. It's one thing to give the award to the wrong book, but a nomination? Why bother making yourself look like gilligan talking on a coconut phone?

I love how blunt Libba Bray is.

Amy that is the sweetest offer! I am actually waiting for it to be sent to me on another thread in this group (and I am way down the list) so I am getting depressed by each reader who posts on here. Thanks so much for the offer. Fellow readers rock! Everyone is so nice around here!

I finished it this weekend. It really was not what I was expecting, but I still enjoyed it. I didn't LOVE it as I'd hoped I would though. I thought it would be more creepy than it was. The pictures were a really interesting touch though. I guess I just think there was some wasted potential. I'd still give it 3.5 stars.

message 11315: by Brandi (new)

Brandi I've been breezing through books for the past few days! Today I finished Closed for the Season by Mary Downing Hahn and read If I Stay (If I Stay, #1) by Gayle Forman and Where She Went (If I Stay, #2) by Gayle Forman . Next up is Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins .

message 11319: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Wow, that is awful! (NBA) And she absolutely seemed to have handled it so gracefully and kind. But I thought it was great that Bray comes behind her and lays out the truth in Myracles defense.

Oh my God! 3 books in a day??? What are you?? Where does everyone get the time to read so much. *I am sulking right now*.

message 11321: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) Reading Mistaken Identity (Rosato & Associates, #4) by Lisa Scottoline . So far so good! I am hooked!

message 11322: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Haha I read fast Pragya, but that was unusual even for me. I'm a school counselor and we were doing testing for our 8th grade students. I get to read while they work on their tests so that helped!

message 11323: by Brandi (new)

Brandi I loved Where She Went Heidi! I'm just starting Anna and the French Kiss but so far so good. I've heard great things from you and others!

message 11326: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments I can see why the committee asked Myracle to step down, I don't agree with their decision and think they're a lot of bastards, but I can see why they did it. Even if she hadn't won the award, she would be able to advertise her book as a nominee (lots of books do). That can tote a lot of weight in some parts of the book community and if this truly was a human error and not a some committee member being a stupid about the subject matter of the book...

Anyway, they didn't handle it graciously, but I'm glad at least a little good is coming out of it.

message 11327: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I think that it was them asking her to step down to 'protect the integrity of the award'. They could have come out and made a very gallant speech about their own error and profusely apologized for how it made Myracle feel to be nominated only to find out it was a mistake and offer to compensate by donating to a charity honoring her book.

If it was truly a mistake I agree that that shouldn't automatically give you a spot. I just think that there was a much more appropriate way that they could have handled it.

message 11328: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) Wendy F wrote: "I think that it was them asking her to step down to 'protect the integrity of the award'. They could have come out and made a very gallant speech about their own error and profusely apologized for..."

I completely agree with you Wendy. Why make it the author's responsibility for your own goof-up.

message 11329: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Personally I think they should've given her the spot (unless it was a crap book like Sweet Valley High or The Zombie Project: Boxcar Children Mystery).

But even if they'd dis-included her somehow they should SAY something. "No comment" is never a good PR answer and they've said very very very little in the after math.

message 11330: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I think that a book should only be nominated on it's own merit. I've never read it (I want to now!), so i can't say whether or not I think it's deserving. I think that to have been kept on the list if the book wasn't meant to be there would feel cheap.

Mostly I think it's what they did afterwards that's really crappy. Calling her in secret and going 'step down so that we don't have to kick you off' is just bogus. It was completely cold and... well I mean, is this thing run by President Snow!

message 11331: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Clearly President Snow! Or someone equally dumb.

I guess my interpretation of the situation was that Shine was somewhere in the competition. If it were even in the top 10 or 12 I don't see an issue allowing it to stay on the list.

message 11332: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) To those who have read Shadowfever (Fever, #5) by Karen Marie Moning (and know how I rate things), can you tell me if it's worth finishing. It's a long book and I'm only 19% of the way through, but Mac is irking me right now. I had to return the audio and switch to text because I couldn't take her talking, ugh. Anywho, I just need to know if she changes from this "mission" she is on. I know there's a dedicated thread but I think it has spoilers so I didn't go in it.

message 11333: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I gave the whole series pretty much 3 stars across the board, last one included. I always meant to write a long review for it but looking back I never did. Um which mission is it that you're referring?

I mean it's the last in a series so thats an incentive to me to finish normally (because then you can be DONE) but well at 16% my status update is quite frustrated so I have a feeling that's a similar place to you. Then at 40% I was yelling at Mac again. Then no more status updates until the end.

message 11334: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I loved it. Absolutely loved it. My favorite in the whole series. But you may not like it, lol.

She does get diverted from her 'mission'. If I know what you're meaning.

It was not my favorite of the series and tended to go on and on IMO. I think it is worth the read so you know how it all ends, but you may want to skim most of the middle!

message 11336: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) The mission I was referring to was (view spoiler). Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I think I will skip it. It's too long and I you know I can't deal with annoying characters. I'll just read the spoiler thread, since if I read it/skim it then I won't be able to count it in my books read. Maybe. *sly eyes*

@Catie - I don't normally hate narrators but that was just wrong, wrong, wrong. And I really love Phil Gigante but I couldn't get into his voices either. Maybe because the storyline annoyed me. Or, maybe I was still reeling from the Mac attack on my nerves. The way she was talking, I was like, "Girl, get over yourself. Quit your whining!".

message 11337: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) P.S. Sorry Wendy F!! Hahaha.

message 11338: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Oh that mission disappears pretty suddenly actually. Just FYI.

Maybe you could just skip and read like the last 50 or 100 pages? It's not that hard to follow after all. LOL

message 11339: by Stormi (StormReads) (new)

Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) I only made it through Faefever and haven't really had a inkling to read the rest..I liked Barons but just didn't really like the end of Faefever...don't feel like I am missing much by not reading the rest of the series...lol

message 11340: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) LOL! No reason to be sorry, I think we're either really on with your books or completely opposite.

message 11341: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I liked the narrator they had for the first 2 or 3 Fever books and never did listen to the two you all are talking about because I was sad my gal was replaced. I read the last two in print.

message 11342: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Just finished Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and Underdogs (Wolfe Brothers, #1-3) by Markus Zusak and highly enjoyed both. Now onto Raw Blue by Kirsty Eagar and hopefully will be starting A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness narrated by Jason Isaacs (HP's Lucious Malfoy) tomorrow.

message 11343: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I just bought Underdogs. I'm excited to read it. I want to read Raw Blue too.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Jason Isaacs!!!!!!!!!!!!

For reals?

message 11345: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I knew they switched narrators! The original Mac annoyed me as well, but it was a likable annoyance. This Mac... I don't know. I just don't think it was a great match at all. (And I've heard Phil Gigante's ladies voices - I don't think anyone likes them!).

I'll miss Barrons. Maybe I'll read those last 100 or so pages... hahaha.
