What are you reading now?

But I do agree that there should be better guidelines in place for dos and don'ts.
These things usually seem to come out sooner or later anyway, though. Thanks to the eagle-eyed among us.
I actually started an author thread in my other YA group because several authors just popped into every thread to talk about their books and I got tired of it.
i just started
then I want to read
and
.i wanted to start crescendo first but i started writing reviews and On Dark Shores: The Lady is for a review....:)

I have never heard of a sock puppet account....:(

I always thought that being indie and being self-pubbed were the same thing. Is there a difference?
I'm thinking a sock puppet account is when someone posts under another name to flog their own book. Is that correct? And, I, too, am wondering what the difference is between indie and self-published.

Maybe the "indie" word makes it look... classier.
Sock puppet accounts are fake accounts created with the purpose of self-promoting his or her own product or agenda. So here on GoodReads it could be an author or a publisher, on other forums it might be a manufacturer, political party, or whatever.Usually easy to spot here on GR by seeing when someone joined, his or her shelves, and the amount of activity devoted to promoting any one person's work vs. interest in other subjects.
Carmel that is what I was saying. I take note of authors who actually post in group threads on different matters and appreciate them - the "spam" ones drive me batty.
No problem, Carmel.I hear "indie" and "self-published" being used interchangeably these days, although "indie" can also mean published by a smaller press. I don't really mind authors adopting the term, since there's a definite stigma attached to self-publishing that's been around for a long time.
And in this digital age, we've moved far beyond what self-publishing used to be.

I will! I've been wanting to read that for a little while anyway :)

While I agree there is a stigma attached to self-pubbed, Indie can sometime be misleading. One or the other parties just need to adopt a new label so we can distinguish between small press (and I'm totally cool with them making the switch) and self-pubbed. Using the same term is just going to create confusion.
People who were published with small press companies called themselves indie before self-pubbing became the giant it is today.
Here's a wikipedia article that talks about small press companies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_press
In some ways self-pubbed today is more akin to vanity presses, which also has negative connotations and nobody wants to be called vain.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanity_p...
Yeah, it's complicated because its changing everyday. Nobody controls the terminology in the new world of self-pubbling and only time will tell what name sticks.
Hi guys! I hope you don't mind me popping in to talk about the sock puppet account thing. I'm a self-pubbed writer and when I first started on GR, I talked about a lot of stuff. Then, I read somewhere on here that writers shouldn't join threads and talk to readers who might potentially be reading their books because it would make them feel uncomfortable. Def. don't wanna do that, so I don't comment. Maybe others are like that too? I do read these threads, though - because you guys talk about some of my favorite books. The Mortal Instruments (<3 Jace), Vampire Academy, Hush Hush! Sigh. lol
Anyway - just wanted to offer a different point of view! =D
Also I have to note that any book that has a cover as awful as the one this sock-puppet account is promoting needs to learn a little bit more about marketing. I know I'm biased because I was a graphic designer but I'm sure there are people online who would do a reasonable cover for a fair rate especially with the abundance of stock photography out there.
Cheryl wrote: "I'm thinking a sock puppet account is when someone posts under another name to flog their own book. Is that correct? Although, I think i recall reading/hearing somwhere that the original Indie's of publishing were your smaller publishing houses and that they were called Indie because they were Independent....but I don't know if that is true.
Hey Sammie thanks for popping in!I think it's fine to comment on threads as long as you aren't commenting constantly about your personal book or arguing with readers who don't like it. As long as your skin is thick enough to read what readers say then I think you're welcome to post and talk about what you're reading (since that's what we talk about).
We have a few people here who have self-pubbed/indie pubbed/whatever we're calling it now and I see no problem having them in the group.
To me (this is just me off the top of my head) the guidelines would be:
1. Don't comment on negative reviews
2. Don't argue with readers
3. Don't shove your book down potential readers throats
4. Don't post under false pretense
As long as your genuinely here as a reader wanting to engage in conversation I don't see any reason not to be here.
There's a lot of different advice/different opinions on the Internet, but I can't imagine not having goodreads groups to talk about books because I looooove talking about books and the real world isn't always as accommodating.

How else are you going to connect with people? I think maybe you could chat along and even mention your book when someone asks just not advertise it through every post you make you know?? We would definitely all love to chat with you more often about your favorite books! :)
p.s. I loved Hush Hush too!!
Cassi - Thanks! I totally agree with you. I can't even imagine arguing with someone who didn't like my book...everyone has different tastes! Cambria - Definitely agree! I've just been chatting on Twitter about my faves but I love reading GR threads, especially when I see people who are in love with the fictional characters I'm in love with. Haha!!
We are all in love with one or maybe two ficitonal characters...Of that I am so guilty! So how is Twitter for you? Is it easy to use?
Archer Cross??? Not familar with him...(yes I hear you gasping). You can have him I suppose. Lets see I really want:Riley from
Tucker from
Oh, and definitely some Damon from Vampire Diaries.!!
Groannnnnn. I just bought this the other day!!!! I so want to read it. I am reading another book first because it is for a review I promised to do. Then it is on with Hex Hall. I have heard such great things about it. Maybe I take back my give away of this Archer Cross....I have high expectations for this book. I will let you know when I get it read!!!

I second that!
It looks as though the puppet account left our group and deleted the comments that started the discussion.

Ooooh - I've never heard of Archer Cross either! My favorites are Adrian Ivashkov (Vampire Academy), Patch (Hush, Hush) and Jace (TMI). *eyebrow waggle* lol
I'm a self-published author with limited time, but would like to comment and interact on occasion in these forums. I hope it doesn't come across as I'm only popping in to promote if I can't get back to the forum in a timely fashion.I'd especially like to tell you what I'm reading right now: I'm half-way through "Shine" by Lauren Myracle (not self-published--Amulet Books) and love it. A book blogger recommended it to me and I'm so thankful she did.
I also just finished reading "Ethereal" by Addison Moore (agented self-pubbed) and then had the opportunity to interview her on my blog. I loved her book as well. It's YA fantasy whereas "Shine" is definitely edgy YA contemporary.
So if those are two genres you enjoy, I recommend you check these two books out.
Have a good night!
Angela
Hey - speaking of, have any of you read the Iron Druid Chronicles? I just learned about this series yesterday and I saw the covers and thought...I GOTTA read those. LOL
I think being able to say "hello authors are welcome as long as their here as people" is actually a very positive outcome to todays discussions. I hope you both feel welcomed here.

Snyder, etc..) who post on here and I really love to read their comments about books.
I'm reading The Truth About Forever. It's my second Sarah Dessen book, and everyone said they really like this one out of all of them but I'm not super into it yet. It seems like all of her books follow the same formula, at least the 2 that I've chosen lol

I love Sarah Dessen, I just read her books in moderation, one every once in a while when I need a good love story. The Truth about Forever and Along for the Ride are two of my fav's.
I just finished
and I'm starting
, although I might put it away for now, not sure I want to read two emotionally draining books in a row. I'm feeling a little depressed : )

I've been reading Sarah Dessen's books all month, but I think I may have liked them more if I took a break between each of them.

You know how they show the "frequently shelved as" section, could be a good way to label a book.
