Heidi Good May Day everyone! I would like to invite everyone to join us in the challenges threads. This months featured author is Lucy Maude Montegomery and this months theme reads are:
1. Mental Health Awareness Month - books with characters who are suffering from mental health issues (depression, eating disorders, cutting, etc..) OR books with characters who have someone close to them with mental health issues (parents, friends, boyfriends).

2. Mother's Day - books with characters with anything pertaining to mothers (children and mothers with close relationships, strained relationships, or a lack of mother).

3. National Teachers Day - books with characters who are close to teachers OR books read in school.

You can read only one theme book or a book from all three themes :) Thanks!

Sara (rose081900) | 177 comments I haven't been around lately. I'm too tired at night to socialize with people after work, LOL. Im not really reading much of anything right now. I got The Spook's Sacrifice (The Last Apprentice / Wardstone Chronicles, #6) by Joseph Delaney (also known as The Clash of the Demons) and Rise of the Huntress (The Last Apprentice / Wardstone Chronicles, #7) by Joseph Delaney , book 6 and 7 of the series, which I thought I had read them all last year but I didn't. The 8th one comes out sometime this year, so I'm reading the two I have this weekend.

Daria (dariadeptula) Finally finished Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1) by Orson Scott Card . I'm actually kind of sad that it's over.

message 8204: by Arphaxad (last edited Apr 30, 2011 10:57AM) (new)

Arphaxad | 335 comments Yay! So glad you liked it, Emily; I'm absolutely smitten with that book. If you're looking for more of the same, I'd leave it a couple of weeks and then read Ender's Shadow (Shadow Series, #1) by Orson Scott Card , which is also really excellent :)

message 8205: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 58 comments Finished Heist Society (Heist Society, #1) by Ally Carter earlier in the week, and getting ready to start reading Happenstance Found (The Books of Umber) by P.W. Catanese

Cambria (cambria409) | 264 comments Just finished reading Afterlife (evernight #4). I liked it...the ending was pretty good. I guess i might have been hoping for something else, but still it was good.
So, trying to decide what to read next....

message 8207: by Jessie Leigh (new)

Jessie Leigh (msjessie) I'm reading The Last Little Blue Envelope the sequel to 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson. It's very very charming and warm, just like the first one. I think I'll be reading her Scarlett series after this because I enjoyed it so much!

Rebecca what did you think of Midnight? I sort of hated Shadow Souls so I was hesitant to buy Midnight, please let me know, thanks.

i agree Cambria the ending was a little of "seriously?" and "well that was a twist in the story". i suspected things would be end as they did for Jace and Clary but i dont really like that twist.i just thought"now what?" and honestly that part brought it down a star for me. i am reading on though, i'll let you know what i think of City of Ashes.

Throught the book, there are many twists and unexpected moments that I loved. The only fault is that I am now frustrated with the whole Elena Stefan Damon triangle, I mean Elena just pick one for goodness sake.
I have read that L J Smith has signed on to do another trilogy in the series and has the 1st wrote, Phantom... No release date is set but I shall be waiting for it.

message 8217: by Gini (new)

Gini (camp80) | 88 comments Ok thanks Rebecca, I thought Elena kinda acted like a hussy in SS, is she two timing them both in Midnight?

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I read Ender's Game and then Speaker for the Dead then Xenocide I think.

I really enjoyed them. Never been sure where to go after that though with the Ender's series.

message 8219: by Arphaxad (new)

Arphaxad | 335 comments I'd actually recommend reading Ender's Shadow and the rest of the Shadow series after Ender's Game. That's the chronological order of the story - the Shadow books follow Bean and the rest of the Battle school kids both during Ender's Game and after they arrive back on Earth. The rest of the Ender series (Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind) actually takes place thousands of years later when Ender arrives at his new colony. It helps to know what happens in the Shadow series before continuing with Speaker for the Dead etc.

@Cassi, if you've not read Ender's Shadow, I definitely recommend you pick that one up next! It's excellent, and fills in a lot of extra parts of the story in EG (the two books are parallel).

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Thanks for the suggestion! I don't know why but I thought Speaker for the Dead was the 2nd book (and I loved it). Will add to my ever-scary TBR list.

Daria (dariadeptula) Cassi (Is out of glitter *sadness*) wrote: "Thanks for the suggestion! I don't know why but I thought Speaker for the Dead was the 2nd book (and I loved it). Will add to my ever-scary TBR list."

Well, Goodreads lists it as the 2nd book so it makes sense to think that it is.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I think I read the Ender's Game books before my great involvement in goodreads. You can read Speaker of the Dead after Ender's Game without any issues.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Speaker for the Dead was the 2nd written by the author.

Is this going to be like CS Lewis & Narnia all over again lol?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Goodreads has been known to screw up book order for several series before. When in doubt, you can usually check the author's website.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I looked at the publication dates and I think I figured out what he was saying.

I always find it odd when author's go back and write a book out of order. Always wonder what brought it about.

I know what you mean. But because it happens so often, (offtopic) I was surprised when I found out that The Hobbit was written before LOTR.

Sofie (paulli) | 52 comments just finished battle royale. starting Willow by Julia Hoban for my rainbow challenge.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Finished The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta .

Have 3 books from library Mexican WhiteBoy by Matt de la Pena , A Spy in the House (The Agency, #1) by Y.S. Lee and Behemoth (Leviathan, #2) by Scott Westerfeld . Not sure which one to start next. I think its always unfair for any book to follow a Melina Marchetta read.

Sorry guys, I'd better clarify! They're two separate series: the Ender's Game series and the Ender's Shadow series. They feature different characters (the former follows Ender's travels in space, thousands of years after EG; the latter starts with a parallel story to EG and then follows the adventures of Bean and the other Battle School graduates back on Earth immediately afterward).

So the entire Shadow series actually takes place chronologically between Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead, and I personally found that a more helpful order to read them in. Sorry for the confusion! :)

Dawn (dawnb2) | 29 comments I'm reading The Girl Who Was on Fire Your Favorite Authors on Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games Trilogy by Leah Wilson now, next on the list is The Throne of Fire (Kane Chronicles, #2) by Rick Riordan

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Decided to start A Spy in the House (The Agency, #1) by Y.S. Lee . It's odd because it's not the type of book I read in general but it was the one I really wanted to start.

message 8236: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Mayer (ashleymayer) | 125 comments I started Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë . It's a bit slow, and honestly I think it's kind of boring, but I'm going to push through it beause I feel like I have to read it.

I've been wanting to read that forever, im curious about it. But I have too many books waiting for me at the moment so I have to postpone reading it -sigh-

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I'll let you know what I think. I saw it browing at the library, remembered it from a blog and it just sounded right for right now.

I keep thinking I'm going to get my TBR list under control. Somehow I doubt it.

Yvonne (vonnie_reads) (vonnie20) I'm trying to decide whether to start Torment (Fallen, #2) by Lauren Kate or Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver next. What do you guys think?

I think its a little slow at the beginning but I really enjoyed Jane Eyre so I hope it will get more interesting to you.

message 8245: by Stormi (StormReads) (new)

Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) I know this is shocking but I just can't get myself in the mood to read Dreamfever (Fever, #4) by Karen Marie Moning . I think its cause I just didn't like the ending of Faefever and I am afraid of whats ahead...LOL

So currently reading You Killed Wesley Payne by Sean Beaudoin which is really different and not really my type but its sucked me up into its wierdness and I have to finish it..lol

Amy, it's a really sweet book. If you like magical realism at all, you'll really enjoy this one.

Lloyd | 415 comments My wife started reading Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning last week and kind of scoffed through the first book or two, but I just picked up the final two books from the library for her. :P (Me, I'm still only about 8 chapters into the first book - slight difference in reading speed and time to read between her and I)

message 8249: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments I imagine I'll be starting The Throne of Fire (Kane Chronicles, #2) by Rick Riordan on the bus ride to work tomorrow.

I might be starting Bloody Jack Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary "Jacky" Faber, Ship's Boy (Bloody Jack, #1) by L.A. Meyer on the trip home tonight!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Fever is one of those series that gets better with each book. Ask your wife what she thought of the end of book 4 when she's finished.
