Young Adult Fiction for Adults discussion
What are you reading now?
Jaimie wrote: "Sheila wrote: "Yes Heidi, bridge to nowwhere, I get it. Now come on you guys you have to admit she is entertaining, right? Each and every time she opens her mouth something even more profoundly..."
Ha!
Something about Ms. Palin does remind me of standing in line at the checkout ogling the National Enquirer.Unfortunately, The Help CD is in high demand. I DO have the book and think it is terrific so far. May I say KINDLE once more? I know the autoreader is not perfect, but it would suffice in a pinch.
Heidi wrote: "p.s. if you think Sarah really wrote that book I have a bridge to sell you (get it...bridge???) Ok I am done now. Well, at least until this weekend when I visit my dad, because he loves her too."
Oh, Heidi, this is yet one more reason why I love you. Haha!
Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Sheila wrote: "I've never read any Harry Dresden books, what are they like?"They're urban fantasy. Harry's a wizard in Chicago. The first one, STORM FRONT, is actually not very good. If a friend had not insisted I try the second book I would have missed SO much good reading!! But when James Marsters is reading it, he even makes STORM FRONT good. I know because I got it when it finally became available on audio and listened to it.
Heidi wrote: "Sheila wrote: "I've never read any Harry Dresden books, what are they like?"Yes - are those good? I just read the description for the first book and it sounds VERY interesting."
You might like these, Heidi. Keep in mind that unless you're going to do it on audio you might want to skip the first one, STORM FRONT, as it isn't really very good. On audio it's different. Starting with the second one, FOOL MOON, the series takes off. CHANCES, which I think is like the 13th book or something, comes out next week. It promises to be a REALLY good read!
Annie - yes to the National Inquirer comment, and I DON'T have a Kindle, so I can't use the autoreader! Thanks for reminding me :( p.s. does the autoreader sound like Steven Hawking????
Lisa wrote: "Percy Jackson and the Olympians are fabulous. Has anyone read or heard anything of "The Last Apprentice" books by Joseph Delaney?"
YES! They are very good! So is the 'Ranger's Apprentice' series by John Flanagan.
Heidi wrote: "Annie - yes to the National Inquirer comment, and I DON'T have a Kindle, so I can't use the autoreader! Thanks for reminding me :( p.s. does the autoreader sound like Steven Hawking????"The autoreader sounds like your average robot.
Yep, and not all the books have text-to-speech.
OK, I put aside Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev. I gave it 100 pages and couldn't get into it, which is a shame because I thought the author wrote beautifully. Now I'm reading The Luxe by Anna Godbersen. A little wary because of the historical setting (which I don't like) but so far it seems OK.
Victoria wrote: "OK, I put aside Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev. I gave it 100 pages and couldn't get into it, which is a shame because I thought the author wrote beautifully. No..."The Luxe novels are pretty good but man talk about backstabbing socialites - gossip girl has nothing on these ladies.
Jaimie wrote: "Victoria wrote: "OK, I put aside Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev. I gave it 100 pages and couldn't get into it, which is a shame because I thought the author wrote..."Good! I was hoping for incredibly scandalous drama in this book!
Shannen wrote: "Can you get audiobooks from the library and download them to your iPod? I might do that if it's possible."Legally you are not supposed to do this, but if you happened to try to burn the cds onto your computer and move them onto your MP3 player, it would work... ;)

Okay, update on my The Book Thief experience, I'm more than half way through it. (I know I'm being slow, but it is what it is and I'm swamped at work!!) 1) Everyone was right, it took a while to get used to Death as the narrator.
2) It was good from the beginning, but yesterday I really got into it. The catalyst you ask? Max showed up! That helps. It adds more urgency to the story
3) What is up with Death and all the spoilers? He keeps getting ahead of himself and tells me things I don't want to know about yet. Why Death Why?? (yes, I realize how weird that sounds)
Overall, really enjoying it though. Good recommendation! No tears yet. We'll see if I can finish without them.

Understand what Bluemoon? I'll understand why all the spoilers?? I hope so because at this point it's really my only complaint. Other than that I'm loving it.

Oh those tears will come, you just wait. Even with Death and all of his spoilers. Do you love Rudy yet?
Laura wrote: "Ughhh! Now I really want to get The Book Thief ! Waiting on the library to get it to me!"Hop to it Laura!
Brittany - I also wondered about the spoilers, but like Blue Moon said, in the end I think it helped the story. Glad you stuck with it. Max is wonderful.

Really liked the "Percy Jackson" series so far, but I'm on the waiting list at the library for 3-5. I'm also on the list for most of the books in the "Ender" series by Orson Scott Card. I usually don't go for sci-fi, but OMG "Ender's Game" is one of my favorite books ever now that I've read it.My To Read list is growing.
I think I am going to reread the Jessica Darling series this weekend. I need a little Marcus Flutie in my life right now. Nanny Returns is slow going (well for me, I'm on pg143) and I feel like I know everything thats going to happen in the rest of the book.
Laura wrote: "I need a recommendation of a fabulous audio book then. Please."If you want a good reader for audio books, try the "Bartimaeus Trilogy" written by Jonathan Stroud. I loved the books, but listening to it was an awesome experience. I don't remember who the voice is, but he makes Bartimaes come alive for me.

Thanks for the recommendation - I heart audiobooks.

I am torn between wanting someone to make it a TV or Movie and not because I am afraid they will mess it up.
Jamie - totally know what your are saying there, sometimes Hollywood screws everything up. p.s. still loving Georgia - I should be done with that this weekend.

Becca, I have heard great things about the Ender's Series. They're on my TBR pile. Let me know how they go as you continue. I'm quite interested. I don't know a thing about the series (and I prefer it to be that way so I have no expectations)
Heidi wrote: "Jamie - totally know what your are saying there, sometimes Hollywood screws everything up. p.s. still loving Georgia - I should be done with that this weekend."Well there is so much to love about Georgia and after listening to the sample audio book I think that would be a great way to experience all that is the Fabity Fab confessions of her young adult life.

Of course I love Rudy. I mean, how can you not...
I'm starting to get hesitant though. I'm in the Fall of 1942 and I'm afraid it's going to be getting intense soon.
Damn the fact that I have to work so much right now! I was at the office until 11:30 last night finishing stuff up, but when I got home I still had to read at least a little bit (50 pages or so) because I want to know what happens. But I can tell it's going to get bad soon... sad day!

I'm reading it. I enjoy audiobooks, when I get the chance to listen to them, but I have an addiction to podcasts so they tend to take up the majority of my audiobook time. So I usually stick with the old school books.
OK, I'm a total dork when it comes to audio stuff so can someone explain what a podcast is?
Shannen wrote: "OK, I'm a total dork when it comes to audio stuff so can someone explain what a podcast is?"It's like a prerecorded am radio show that you can download in mp3 format.
Laura wrote: I love Ender's Game too! I have read Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide and Children of the Mind. It's at the top of my list. I loved Bean so I can hardly wait to read from his perspective.

Shannen wrote: "OK, I'm a total dork when it comes to audio stuff so can someone explain what a podcast is?"Yes, what Jamie said, and they tend to be topical. So, for example I listen to a Harry Potter podcast called Mugglecast which I download for free from itunes, and they give me all the lastest info I could ever need to know about what's going on in the Harry Potter world. This one in particular has chapter-by chapter discussions and all kinds of fun segments like quote quiz, make the music connection, and LovePotion, Imperio, Avarda Kadavra (a HP version of screw, marry, kill), among other things.
I think it's higly entertaining and love to listen to them while I'm working out at the gym. (That and I think Micah has a super sexy voice)
But you can find one for almost any topic and they are usually attached to websites.
I love comedians podcasts like Bill Burr and Adam Corrola. My husband has been listening to Sick and Wrong, but from the title I think I'll skip it!
