Young Adult Fiction for Adults discussion
What are you reading now?
I thought
was a okay read but it took me way to long to actually get interested in what was going on..with all the OMG's this is a awesome book I thought I was going to be the only one that just thought it was eh, okay..LOL Glad I am no longer alone. :)
I love the idea of reading a new book first thing. BUT lately I've been waiting to see what everyone else thinks before jumping straight on a new release (unless its by an author I already love)

Mmm. Good idea, Jaimie! I'll have to try it.
It happens to me every few months and when I go back to reading I am back to my super reader self. That is also how I got addicted to many a cancelled show like Wildfire and Veronica Mars also ones in their like billionth season like One Tree Hill.
Iam reading City of Bones been trying to read it for two days now but i was in the hospital and kept falling asleep from all the good drugs they give you lol Now i am home so i should stay awake now!
From the library I just received....
ahhh... I need to hurry up and finish The Pillars of the Earth!!!
Wendy F wrote: "YAY! Chaos Walking! I love seeing people read those books!"Agreed. Mainly because it gives us an excuse to talk about those books...

[boo..."Chaos Walking and The Help - most excellent!

And live vicariously through them!

So far, so good, although I just started reading it tonight (I'm about 50 pages in). I've heard lots of good things about it.

Yay Jaimie. Are you gearing up for Piper's Son? I was stalking Melina Marchetta's website last night and saw that she released a middle grade book in Australia only (of course) that has something to do with Jonah Griggs' little brother. I clapped my hands with excitement.
Just the thought of learning more about Jonah Griggs turns me into a squealing fan-girl. Although I don't actually think Jonah is in the book. But a Griggs is a Griggs (or so I hope).
CARMEL: Where are you? Have you read it? I want details... okay not really, but you get the point.

Hahaha Yes, actually that is EXACTLY what I'm doing! I just heard of these books so I am excited to start them!
lol I am not quite sure who Griggs is yet, though I am betting I am about to find out aren't I? :-D *Fastens seat belt*

Actually, different book, same author. So maybe not. He's a character in Jellicoe Road. I LOVE him! Francesca has her own boy drama.

Wow, first time for everything."I had to read this for class a couple semesters ago and I just wanted to die. It was so terrible. But my professor soothed me a little bit by saying it was written before the time of the novel.. so it wasn't actually supposed to be entertaining. Still bored me out of my mind though.
I'm glad I started with Uglies before other Dystopians because a lot of the later Dystopia is so good I think it would have paled, but as one of my firsts I really enjoyed it.

I guess I'll have to read that one too? lol

I didn't like Gone. But otherwise I agree. I started with the Uglies series, moved on to Hunger Games, read one of the Gone books and didn't like it, then moved onto the amazingness that is Chaos Walking. It was a good progression. Sometimes its hard to go backwards in a genres development.
I liked Gone, Hunger Games, and of course the Amazing Chaos Walking. Honestly, since Chaos Walking I havne't been able to pick up another dystopian. It's that whole, not wanting any competition for my favorite, lol.

Don't worry Francesca is really good and her boy is good too. It is my opinion that you cannot go wrong with any book by Melina Marchetta. I personally enjoyed On the Jellicoe Road and Finnikin of the Rock more.
I'm sure you'll get there. I know Heidi, Peep, Wendy, and Shannen are big fans too. When/if you read Jellicoe Road just know it takes well over 100 pages to get into it.

. I think there's so much potential in it and I can't put it down. I'm rereading the previous action scenes because I didn't find them believable at first. Now I imagine them fighting martial arts style and it actually works haha! I'm curious about what others think about the romance though?
I started
this morning and I'm already about half way through. It's a cute, light read that I decided to pick up because of all the raves I've read from this group. Really enjoying it thus far :)
Ok, I'm apparently totally out of the loop because I've never heard of Chaos Walking... Dang it. I've gotta get on these discussion boards more!!!
Am I missing something epic here??
Am I missing something epic here??
You are missing something epic! But worries THERE IS STILL TIME! Start with
then it gets better and better with
and then its AMAZING by
. Then when you finish you feel a little crushed and defeated because you want more.
I was writing that I thought it was epic too, and I was thinking about how we're pretty good networkers for specific Authors. I think Melina Marchetta and Pat Ness should put us on payroll, lmao.
Wendy F wrote: "I was writing that I thought it was epic too, and I was thinking about how we're pretty good networkers for specific Authors. I think Melina Marchetta and Pat Ness should put us on payroll, lmao."Or at least send us ARC or swag! (Or whoever Marchetta based Jonah Griggs on)
We do push other people occasionally (I'm a Hex Hall pusher I know) but those have been our biggest. I wish there were a way to know how many people have read these books based on our group pimping them.
Ha!!! Ok, I will definitely check them out! Yay!! I need something epic to obsess about. Most of the books I've read lately have been total letdowns. Sigh.
OH, I feel I should ask so I can prepare myself: is this going to become one of those times where I don't speak to anyone or sleep for days because I can't make myself stop reading??
I get way overly involved in the books I read.

Potentially. I got the first 2 Chaos Walking from the library and I functioned fairly normally between the first and second. But when it got to the 3rd book I immediately bought
on my Kindle because I NEEDED it. The books end of cliff hangers which is kind of torture.

Uh oh. I feel like this could be extremely dangerous for me. And as my ridiculously lame library most likely won't have them (grrrr), I'll have to hunt them down elsewhere.
See, this is why I'm an obsessive book buyer!!

The cliffhangers are rough. For me it was the same thing. I read the first two and thought they were really great, but I was functioning. After reading Monsters of Men I was a blubbering mess and I've had a hard time picking up another Dystopian ever since. I just know they won't be as great. Hunger Games wasn't even as good to me.
Chaos Walking is underrated (and I'm determined to make more people love it). I don't know if its better than Hunger Games but I don't think its less than Hunger Games. I think there is a bit of a flood of Dystopians which is why Chaos Walking has not got the much deserved attention. I also think the fact that its got a more sci-fi element probably turns some people off.Better than Uglies, better than Unwind, better than Maze Runner, better than most series out there. Chaos Walking!
I'm still reading
but just bought
for my Kindle because it was only $5.59! I think I'm going to read that next. :)

It's only $5.59 on Kindle!!!!! AHHHH(Please don't make me consider a re-read oh publishing powers that be!)
Oh my word. The fact that you guys think it's as good or better than the Hunger Games makes me want to leave work right this second & go buy it. I am absolutely in love with those books & have forced (no really, there were threats involved) my friends & sister to read them.
Aaaah!! I'm so excited now! =)

Whereas I think that Mockingjay left me feeling just a teeny tiny bit disappointed. I still LOVED it. Both series got 5 stars from me, but it felt like Hunger Games was the best, Catching Fire wasn't quite as good, and Mockingjay wasn't quite as good as the other two. I found the opposite of Chaos walking. Each book was better then the previous.
Hunger Games and Chaos Walking are only similar because they are both Dystopian. Other then that they are very very different.

Isamlq I plan to keep preaching Chaos Walking and Melina Marchetta. Its my own way of trying to make these authors write more books (by helping them get more readers).

That's where I'm at now. I normally devour books quickly, and lately just haven't done it at all. I read 12 books last month, and I've only read 5 this month. It's almost depressing. Sighs
