Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) It don't bother me to put a book down if I am not interested in it I have three or four bookshelves full of books that are just my TBR pile plus review books..if I am not interested by 50 pages it goes back in the pile and if I get to it later I do if not it usually goes in a contest on my blog. :)

message 5802: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I try to put a book down if I'm not interested but then it haunts me. Like an unfinished project.

I enjoyed the complex ideas. I like books that make me think and challenge my believes. However, I just can't see some of the concepts in the later books in movie form.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I feel like I read some of them early early high school (so years ago) but they were missing either the 2nd or 3rd so I never finished the series. For some reason I really FEEL like I read Ruby in the Smoke but I don't remember it at all....

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 325 comments I think people asked me to update them on which ARC's I received from Netgalley. I have gotten the following so far:
I Love Him to Pieces (My Boyfriend Is a Monster) by Evonne Tsang Angel (Angel Trilogy, #1) by L.A. Weatherly (not sure if that is the same one or not...) Angelfire (Angelfire, #1) by Courtney Allison Moulton Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver Lost Voices (Lost Voices, #1) by Sarah Porter The Vampire Voss by Colleen Gleason In the Arms of Stone Angels by Jordan Dane and Vegan Family Meals: Real Food for Everyone

I have read the first one (graphic novel) I am unsure which to read next. I have to read them all in under 2 months I think! Oh my... Any opinions or suggestions of which should go next on the TBR?

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride It was a good book and I did like it. I have been picking my brain trying to find a good comparable book and I can't. There were a lot of parts in the book that seemed to happen too fast, or that seems not really believable but it's fiction, and paranormal fiction at that. I really enjoyed the fact that it was a stand-alone book, I am so sick of reading series books for a while. Also, the main character just finds out he's a necromancer, so the story is mostly about how he became one, not of him using much of his powers. I suggest giving it a try, its only 350 pages and a lot of people gave the book 4 stars.

I finish everything that I start, but I am generally positive that I want to finish before I start. If I enjoy the first three pages, then the book is worth reading. Rarely does this rule fail me.

It was turned into a TV movie that was quite good, starring the current Doctor Who and a previous companion (Matt Smith and Billie Piper).

Chas | 23 comments It's so good to read all of the Garth Nix and Philip Pullman love here. They are probably my two favorite YA novelists. Truthfully, they are two of my favorite novelists of any age group or genre.

I would really like to find someone (multiple someones, preferably) else as good.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments I finally have SHADOWFEVER!! I got it yesterday and have been reading reading reading away.

i love seeing that there are fans as well. they are such great novels and so worth a read. within my friends, if i even mention these books, they all go, "huh? who's that? i've never heard of those books." and i'm going, are you kidding me?! haha

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments It drives me nuts that Garth Nix is not that well-known in my circle of people I know.

You can download books from your library? O.o

message 5816: by Liz (new)

Liz Fichera (lizfichera) @Chas - Yes, I download books to my nook from my local Phoenix, Arizona, library all the time. It's been wonderful. I think (hope?) libraries across the country are starting to do it too.

message 5817: by Chas (new)

They did The Shadow in the North the next year, which I also thought was pretty good. I preferred the novels, but I thought they were surprisingly well-done for television productions.

I am a voracious, but overly-selective reader. I really don't enjoy reading things that aren't written well (with Philip Pullman, Garth Nix, China Miéville, and Neil Gaiman as example standard bearers). I overwhelmingly prefer fantasy that isn't set exclusively in a fantasy realm, and I don't want romance to be more than a side story. I prefer heroines to heroes. It's hard for me to get excited about a book that is fewer than 350 pages. I prefer series to standalones. I don't like much humor.

I'm now excited to peruse your list, hopefully to find another gem or two. I haven't found a gem in a long while. Yes, I know it is my fault for being too picky, but that just the way I'm wired.

:-)

Thank you very much!

I found it really hard to decide which character was my favorite, but I think it came down to it being Sabriel. But I think what I love most, and it's not a character at all, is the bells, for some reason, i just have this attraction to them and i feel like they're almost a character themselves. (me and my crazy mind)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments The bells are characters...in their own way. They do have personalities after all.

I also love Nick and Mogget.

Heidi Sorry, but try as I might, I could not get past the first 100 pages of Sabriel (Abhorsen, #1) by Garth Nix *she says as she ducks* I still may try it on audio sometime though now that my Overdrive has it.

it's okay. it really is one of those books that really has to appeal to you for you to be able to read the entire thing. i struggled through the 3rd one, so i can understand what you mean. :)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Lirael Daughter of the Clayr (Abhorsen, #2) by Garth Nix Was my first audiobook during college (then I didn't listen to another for like 4 years) and I enjoyed it. So hopefully that means it was good--hard to remember to judge.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments So... can I just say about Shadowfever (no spoilers I promise)

I don't think I've ever encountered so many WTF moments in a book before. It's like they just keep on coming one after the other. I want Mac to shut up, but at the same time I want her to keep talking because I have to know more. I feel so conflicted. So far I'm LOVING it!

message 5834: by Stormi (StormReads) (new)

Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) I am listening to A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn and the narration is sort of creaping me out a bit..lol. It has rotating chapters like a lot do these days between two characters Jack and Talia the narrators are a girl and a guy..but when its Jacks it has the guy doing all the voices so Talia sounds funny and when its Talias turn the girl does that voice and then Jack sounds funny..or rather creapy..LOL I think I like the book but I am just bothered by the narration.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Catie, are you the one who actually finished Shadowfever in 1 day? I'm on day 3 and am approx. half way through (and I'm really not doing anything but work, school, and reading). You are amazing to have finished it in one day! It's HUGE.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Wendy wrote: "Oh my gosh, I can feel this body dying all around me! I want my copy now!"

Now that you understand KMM's cliffhangers you can understand why we are all so anxious to read it. Imagine having to wait months like the rest of us. You're lucky Wendy.

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Has anyone read Moloka'i by Alan Brennert ? It's not YA though.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I think the cliffhangers made Shadowfever that much more rewarding though. After months of speculation and discussion and coming up with theories, to have so much of it explained was like a little piece of heaven.

If I had read all of them back to back it might not have had the same effect on me.

I finished it in one day, but I did some skimming. I re-read it thoroughly afterwards, and I think i need to read it again.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) If I hadn't had kids running around, I would have been done the first day. It took me a day and a half.

message 5841: by Stormi (StormReads) (new)

Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) Wish I could read that fast. :(

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I forced my husband to cook dinner so I could read. He understood that this wasn't just "any" book though.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 325 comments Finished Infinite Days (Vampire Queen, #1) by Rebecca Maizel and I don't know what to think of it... I need some time for it to simmer in my brain. I will probably do a video review of it tomorrow. I am also still working on Zombies vs. Unicorns by Holly Black . I want to try and finish it before the end of the month. I don't know if I will have time to finish any others before the month is over. I am itching to start one of my netgalleys though. I only have 2 months to read them... maybe I will start Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver . I have heard it is AMAZING. :)

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Nice ladies. That's dedication. I'm definitely putting other things on hold, but work and school come first. Although *cough cough* I might be coming down with something so I might just have to stay home from work. I think I've got that Fever that's going around. You know, the same one Stacia had.

sigh... if only I could take off work to finish the thing. You'll be seeing me in that spoiler thread someday soon. Maybe Sunday. My goal is to be finished by then.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Just started Don't Die, Dragonfly (The Seer, #1) by Linda Joy Singleton . Got it free on my Kindle (gosh I love getting things free!). Also still reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Oxford World's Classics) by Arthur Conan Doyle . Because it's written in small unconnected episodes it's really nice to read a few then read a book then come back to Holmes.

And listening to In the Belly of the Bloodhound Being an Account of a Particularly Peculiar Adventure in the Life of Jacky Faber (Bloody Jack, #4) by L.A. Meyer . Seems like I'm listening to it so slowly--but thats because I've missed work with sickness or worked from home a lot lately. Tomorrow I have a long drive (if it doesn't snow too much) for work purposes so I'll finally get some quality time with Jacky.

Arphaxad | 335 comments I'm done with Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson , which took me a little while to get into, but then picked up pretty awesomely. Original ideas, good characters.

Looking forward to The Well of Ascension (Mistborn, #2) by Brandon Sanderson , the second in the trilogy.

Now having a quick reread of Wild Magic (Immortals, #1) by Tamora Pierce , which is fun, and then I'll probably start Impossible by Nancy Werlin .
