"If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book. In this book, not only is there no happy ending, there is no happy beginning and very few happy things happen in the middle."
The Bad Beginning
Just to torture everyone...I can be so, so quiet. Haste ruins the silence. Impatience squanders the hunt.
It was a pleasure to burn.
It happened at night. I woke to the sound of the wind blowing my curtains back. I opened my eyes but saw nothing. Not even moonlight. Not even shadows.
This isn't an PA book, but it's cool so far!"The Tennessee night was screaming. Eric Powell ran clumsily through the tall grass behind his grandparents' house. He stumbled down the sloping embankment toward the thick patch of swampy woods beyond, hands pressed firmly against his ears."

"People say that what we're all seeking is a meaning for life. I don't think that's what we're really seeking. I think what we're seeking is an experience of being alive."

I'm really liking it so far! It kind of reminds me of Winnie the Pooh but for an older audience.
My favourite first line is from Procession of the Dead by DB Shan.Ïf The Cardinal pinched the cheeks of his arse, the walls of the city bruised. They were that close, Siamese twins, joined by a wretched, twisted soul.

When he grabs Mama's wrist and yanks her toward the wallhanging like that, it must hurt. Mama doesn't cry out. She tries to hide her pain from him, but she looks back at me, and in her face she shows me everything she feels. If Father know she's in pain and showing me, Father will take Mama's pain away and replace it with something else.
"This is how it starts: some hapless girl in a skanky little tank top lying on her back in the wet grass somewhere in Hidden Hills."
Late in the winter of my seventeenth year, my mother decided I was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read the same book over and over, ate infrequently, and devoted quite a bit of my abundant free time to thinking about death.
I bear a deep red stain that runs from my left shoulder down to my right hip, a trail left by the herbwitch's poison that my mother used to try to expel me from her womb. That I survived, according to the herbwitch, is no miracle but a sign I have been sired by the god of death himself.

I smack into him as if shoved from behind. He doesn't budge, not an inch. Just holds my shoulders and waits. Maybe he's waiting for me to find my balance. Maybe he's waiting for me to gather my pride. I hope he's got all day.
There used to be more of us. I'm certain of this. Not enough to fill a sports stadium or even a movie theatre, but certainly more than what's left today. Truth is, I don't think there's any of us left. Except me. It's what happens when you're a delicacy. When you're craved. You go extinct.
The charcoal sky spits cold rain as we rumble to a stop at a crossroad. A black cart blocks the road, and even in an armored carriage we know better than to force our way past.
