Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Looking for your next read?

Check here to see if you can find a book that has a connecting factor to one that you already like.

Please label if a series is adult. Since this is a YA group, we don't want to surprise anyone with the level of content.

EVERYONE is welcome to add to the thread.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) If you like The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins you may like The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner

Connecting factor : Both are dystopian and have elements of action, violence and the struggle to escape. HG is better, but it's hard to equal HG.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) If you like Blue Bloods (Blue Bloods, #1) by Melissa de la Cruz , you may like The Luxe (Luxe, #1) by Anna Godbersen

Connecting factor : Both are about social climbing New Yorkers, even though BB is PNR and Luxe is historical.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) If you like City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare , you may like White Cat (Curse Workers, #1) by Holly Black

Connecting factor : Both are Urban Fantasy set on the east coast. Both authors have similar writing styles (they are even friends and edit each other's books). Male characters have similar wounded hero appeal. Jace from MI even has a hidden alternate world mention in White Cat.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I know some of you have great ones to rec. Some of you are as big or even bigger readers than I am.

brittany (cirilla) If you like Graceling (The Seven Kingdoms, #1) by Kristin Cashore you might like Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Poison Study is amazing. Good catch!

message 8: by brittany (new)

brittany (cirilla) Yeah it's a great series. I'm gunna have to read it again.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I actually liked it better than Graceling, but both Valek and Po are !!!

message 10: by brittany (new)

brittany (cirilla) Yeah, same. Definitely!

message 11: by brittany (new)

brittany (cirilla) If you like The Iron King (Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa you might like Wings (Wings, #1) by Aprilynne Pike

Katty | 418 comments Stacia, if I may, let me tell you I love you for this!!! xD

message 13: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Thank you Stacia! This is a great idea. I've been wanting to read White Cat, and I loved MI, so I'm glad to hear I might enjoy it.

message 14: by Katty (new)

Katty | 418 comments If you like The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien you might like The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Thanks Katty and Sasha. :)

If you like The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins , you might like Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman

Connecting factor : They're both dystopian books. The stories are not the same, but most people that love HG also really enjoy Unwind for many of the same controversial reasons. In the future abortion has been outlawed, but parents can opt to give their teens over while still alive to be "unwound" by letting the government harvest their body parts for medical purposes.

message 16: by Katty (new)

Katty | 418 comments @ Stacia, sorry for my ignorance, but I believe I never completely understood what dystopian is... I've always related them with chaos or something, well, actually like a difficult situation and the will of the characters to survive or so, am I getting it wrong?

brittany (cirilla) Katty wrote: "@ Stacia, sorry for my ignorance, but I believe I never completely understood what dystopian is... I've always related them with chaos or something, well, actually like a difficult situation and th..."

Dystopia is something like a 'nightmare' world so something set a strict/bad world.

message 18: by Katty (new)

Katty | 418 comments ohh, ok I get it, thanks!! :)

message 19: by Ruby (last edited Jan 04, 2011 05:53PM) (new)

Ruby (rubita) | 8 comments I just thought of this one recently: If you like Wildwood Dancing (Wildwood, #1) by Juliet Marillier , you'd probably like Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken .

They're both historical fantasy, though as far as I can tell, the world of Brightly Woven is a product of the author's imagination. Wildwood Dancing seems like it could be set in our world.

message 20: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Jan 05, 2011 12:45AM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) @ Katty,

This thread will probably clear it up a bit. I wanted to know more about it myself not too long ago.

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...

There's also a ton of dystopian books listed in there, with differing opinions. It was a good discussion.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) If you like City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare , you might like Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires, #1) by Rachel Caine .

Connecting factor : They are both Urban Fantasy, which is rare for YA, since most paranormal books in YA are paranormal romance. It's nice to see some series getting down with the action. Both Clary in MI and Claire in Morganville are sort of wimpy heroines in books 1 of their respective series, and have to learn how to stand up for themselves over time. Both stories involve a group of teens living together unsupervised.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) If you like this The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1) by Kelley Armstrong , you may like this Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1) by Rachel Hawkins

Connecting factor : Both books feature teens living among other teens. They both also include multiple races and talents/abilities, as well as a female lead that isn't sure who she can really trust.

NocturnalRavings(Jodie) (mistrissmoon) | 31 comments If you liked The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins Then you'd probably like Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld

Connecting Factor : Both set in a Post-Apocilyptic (sp?) world with a controlling goverment.

message 29: by Michele (new)

Michele Good thread topic!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Please guys, feel free to add your books. :)

It doesn't matter if the book has been used before (like we've done Hunger Games a few times).

Shea (narcohypnia) | 14 comments If you liked Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate then you'll like Embrace (The Violet Eden Chapters, #1) by Jessica Shirvington .

Connecting factor: pretty much the whole basis of the storyline is similar.

Catherine (cattymccat) | 754 comments If you liked Marked (House of Night, #1) by P.C. Cast (series) then you may like Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires, #1) by Rachel Caine (series).

In my opinion, you would have to like Morganville Vampires if you like House of Night. I love HON, but Morganville is way better written.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Did you read Boneshaker? I've read Leviathan, but only got about halfway through BS. I liked what I read so far, but just didn't have time to finish before it went back to the library, same with Incarceron, which I've gotten to the halfway point on twice now, lmao.

Catherine (cattymccat) | 754 comments If you liked Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling then you might like Knightley Academy (Knightley Academy, #1) by Violet Haberdasher .

Catherine (cattymccat) | 754 comments I've read part of it just like you Stacia. My A.D.D. is acting up or something. lol

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) It has a harder sci-fi feel, so it's not the easiest one to get into. I actually was liking it and had just gotten past the part where the son was off on his own and at some point will have to go back and read it out of curiousity.

message 47: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (cattymccat) | 754 comments I liked it... I just get sidetracked sometimes.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) You and me both.
