It's really interesting so far, sort of a bit of time-traveling involved, I'm really diggin' the historical aspect.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Yeah, good idea. I sent my first book off via GR bookswap Saturday and was surprised how easy it was. Kinda like NetFlix, I just printed the label, put the book in the envelop and popped it in my mail box for the postman. The person received it Monday! Wow. Cool.

P.S. I like teasing Faithmarie b/c she has the same warped sense of humor I do. Plus, she has had The Windflower on her "currently reading" shelf for ages, when she's already read it. And she NEVER looks posts here. So, I'm safe, right?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Ohhhhhhhh, Michelle! OMG! Yes, you must, must, must. It's is my favorite LK series. I've never really been thrilled over first-person POV, but these books sold me.

I still remember when I first saw the paperback was finally out in the bookstore and being so disappointed because yet another one of my favorite HR authors was bowing to pressure and going mainstream. I wasn't reading contemporary romances at the time, so I actually hesitated over the purchase of Sugar Daddy. In addition, I really loathed the title. Ugh! I started reading it standing there, eventually grouped blindly for a chair while I kept my eyes glued to the pages, then went running to the cash-register, my heart pumping erratically with adrenaline to unmentionable pulse points for poor Liberty, the pit bulls, and Hardy. Man-oh-man! Don’t you love finding a worthy new book by a great author? I'm having the "Big O" just recalling it.

And I thought Dhes would jump on you over your PIFM challenge book by Pamela Clare. Ha! Well, she hasn't noticed, so I'm going to jump first!

Lina | 5563 comments I'm starting to freak out a bit... just when I think I'm going through my TBR pile quite well, considering my current study commitments, I come on GR to tick them onto my "read" pile, find myself checking out what other people are reading, or if I really liked a book and it was a new author, then I'll start wishlisting (if it wasn't a verb before, it is now!) that author's backlist.... or, or, OR, I join more challenges!!! My TBR list is growing at a rate of knots!!!!

*Phew* Now I got that little freak-out out of my system, I can admit; I'm enjoying being introduced to authors and writing styles I probably wouldn't have known about it if weren't for all these recommendations! (because recommendations sounds so much better than me saying I sticky-beak into other peoples' shelves, lol)
:-)

Oooh, just want to ask, how do people keep track of which books they've committed to reading for challenges/themes?

message 180: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (last edited Apr 02, 2011 05:31AM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Caro B, With regard to keeping track of challenges, I've done a couple things, some ideas stolen from others. I added a few more "exclusive" bookshelves, one of which is entitled "on-deck" which means, for me, it is committed to a challenge. (I think I stole this from Auntee.) If I'm covering something you know, forgive me.

You already have three exclusive shelves: "read" "currently-reading" and "to-read" (the last often called TBR in postings); choosing one cancels out its place on another. I assume you know how to add a bookshelf. To make it exclusive you have to go in and edit your bookshelves on your my books screen. (Upper left hand corner.) Note: You won’t see the changes made until you exit the edit screen. If you add "on-deck" and make it exclusive, you will then have four shelves where only one at a time can be checked.

I've also added a "to-ponder" exclusive bookshelf so than when I'm in a PIFM (Pick It For Me) challenge, where someone looks at my TBR shelf, they won't choose a book I am waffling over (one I don't want to spend the money on yet), I'm unsure of the author, or isn't available at my library. I also added a "to-read-series" exclusive bookshelf so that I can keep track of series books separately, or my PIFM partner can nudge me along toward the next one. And, since I listen to audio books, I added a “currently-listening-to”; however I took it off the exclusive bookshelf, due to people not being able to see what I am currently 'reading' on my profile page. Now I click both shelves to make it show. BTW, GR's is thinking of changing this feature as so many people are listening to audio of some kind.

Also for challenges I sometimes mark on the review>edit screen; under Private Notes, I add which challenge the book applies toward.

Thanks Lisa Kay! I had wondered about adding an extra shelf, I use my to-read for books I already have but haven't yet read and have one titled "wishlist" which is for books i'm still trying to buy, beg, steal or borrow. I'd thought about putting the challenge books under Currently Reading (cos I'm meant to be, right?) but REALLY like the idea of adding in the private notes to clarify which challenges:-)
Thanks a squill!

I also really like the idea of the "to-read-series" shelf. Would help keep things much simpler. Do you reorganise often?

message 183: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) CaroB: I started an exclusive "interested-in" shelf. My to-read is only my physical book stacks, Kindle books, or first-read entries. They tell you putting it as to-read is supposed to help you win.

Anyways, on a non-exclusive shelf I choose either future-release or at-library or first-read entries to further clarify. So if it's for a challenge you could either create an exclusive shelf or a non-exclusive shelf. Exclusive shelf just means it can't be on two exclusives at once. Such as you can't have it "to-read" and "currently-reading" at the same time.

Lina | 5563 comments Thanks heaps for all the help ladies!

Kristi - your "interested-in" shelf sounds like my "wishlist". My to-read is only books I physically (or digitally) have.

Lisa - LOL!! I'm a virgo, I understand! This whole discussion now has me reorganising my shelves, but just after I started, I noticed Jane_lLittle from DearAuthor blog only has a few shelves and am liking the minimalist approach. Especially as I already organise all my ebooks on Calibre... hmmm, decisions, decisions :-)

ummm, just noticed something - should i then not have a wishlist shelf unless I'm joining the GoodReads bookswap? Can I do that if I deal mainly with ebooks?

message 187: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (last edited Apr 02, 2011 05:39AM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Kristi, I'm a Virgo too! LOL! What a crack-up.

I really wanted to go with the minimalist approach also. It's one of the reasons I put my challenge info under Private Notes; I don't want too many shelves (which is how some people tag them).

Then I kept noticing all the clever titles to people's bookshelves. And people would ask a question: Which book of Garwood's has a pig in it? Which books have an older woman/younger man featured (which I call "mrs-robinson" hee-hee) as the main characters? Or they'd want a period suggestion.

So...the shelves grew.

message 190: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) CaroB: Your wishlist shelf is fine. The only way I know that the wishlist is connected to the swap is as such:
I will search the swap for a book, if it's not there, I'll click add to my wishlist. I have my notifications set up so that if someone posts a book on my wishlist, I am notified of it. That way I can go and request the book if I so choose. I don't always, it depends on if there are other books I want more that month.

Anyways, I hope that helps.

I too like the minimalist approach and from time to time will delete a shelf if I feel it's redundant. I admit I haven't cleaned house in a while, but I need to. I'm just one of those that thinks, hmmm, what's the exact difference between suspense and thriller? Or thriller and mystery? Or mystery and suspense? They seem very, very similiar to me. Anyways...rambling. :)

Kristi (kristicasey) Kit wrote: "Do you have to have a credit card or anything attached to your account for the swap to work?"

Kit: Lisa Kay is right. They have to have a payment method for you to pay for the shipping. But as she said, it's only the person receiving the book that pays. And it's just for the shipping of the book.

My protocol is to use a card that's not a main account. No matter how secure a sight, I still am paranoid about that stuff. I usually use a cc that has a very low limit, like a couple hundred, so that way if whatever site I'm using gets jacked and my billing info is used they're not going to get far from me. HA!
