Jess | 3721 comments Considering our old Introduce Yourself Thread had over 500 posts and was first started in 2009, we figured it might be nice to start fresh with a new thread for the new year.

Feel free to introduce yourself to the group here!!

I will break the proverbial ice and introduce myself to all the newbies and reintroduce myself to the old folk of the group :)

My name is Jess, I'm the creator and one of the moderators of this group Who's Your Author? I discovered my love of PNR and UF books through GR's so I decided to spread the word on these delicious books by starting my own group. I don't know about anyone else, but I LOVE discovering new authors that have a few books out that I can fly through. I hope people are enjoying this group and finding new books to read because of it!

Shelia (shelialew) New to GoodReads and new to this group.
My name is Shelia and I love, love, love to read... paranormal seems to be the only genre that I never get bored with. My favorite author/series is Laurell K. Hamilton/Anita Blake series. I do enjoy many other authors but it will take me a while to get them all listed.
Thanks for allowing me to join the group!

Shelia (shelialew) Thanks Jess :)

message 13: by Dominic (new)

Dominic Simpson Been on Goodreads a little while, but never joined a group. I almost entirely read via audiobook as I just don't have time for paper these days. I am generally a bit of a Sci-Fi/Fantasy type, but lately have found my second home in UF. I have been listening to some PNR as well lately. Jeanine Frost, Cassandra Clare, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, etc for the authors related to this group at least.

message 14: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments Welcome to the group Dominic!

message 15: by Hope Welsh (new)

Hope Welsh | 12 comments Thought I'd pop in and say hi, as I love paranormal and fantasy and romance. I both write and read pretty much any genre of romance.

I'd like to recommend two authors that I haven't seen listed (although I did NOT read every page!)

Amanda Hocking writes YA paranormal/fantasy (I'm an adult, and I enjoyed them quite a bit)

H.P. Mallory writes paranormal fantasy as well--for adults. Her stories are excellent, too.

Both are best-selling indie authors (Amazon ranking in the top 25 of paid books)

I also like JR Ward, Meljean Brooks, Linda Howard (her Raintree book was one of my favorites), Kay Hooper...just to name a few

message 16: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments Hi Hope! Thanks for the author recommendations! If you want you can start threads for both those authors under the paranormal folder and start some discussions about them.

message 17: by Hope Welsh (new)

Hope Welsh | 12 comments oh kewl :D I'm new here, so I don't know a lot about the site yet. But, they are really awesome writers.

I write, too--and their sales and writing just floor me. New names---but they won't be 'new' for long at the rate these ladies go!

message 22: by Sabina (new)

Sabina Kines | 2 comments Hi,
I'm new here (as you can probably guess. I love paranormal romance and sometimes (if it's good) urban fantasy. My favorite author from urban fantasy is Patricia Briggs. And I have a lot of favorite authors from the paranormal romance section. Richelle Mead, Stepheni Meyer (she's the one who got me started in this genre), Kristin Cast and P.C. Cast (I liked them more at the beginning), Carrie Jones, L.J. Smith, Becca Fitzpatrick,(and many more)..... But I guess if I had to narrow it down it would be Richelle Mead for the paranormal section and Patricia Briggs for the urban f. section. I write too so they all give me inspiration:)

Welcome Tara. I'm new to this group too. Suggestions on what to read...well, what kind of PNR and UL books do you like to read? If you are new to those genre its sometimes best to go with fav. creatures (vampires, elves, werewolves, zombies, angels/demons, etc) and/or styles (historical, future, fantasy, contemporary, etc.). Like for me, when it comes to magic heavy themes and fairy-tale-like I lean heavily towards contemporary or parallel reality types---Harry Potter, Dresden Files, Wednesday Tales, Discworld to name a few.

message 40: by Tara (new)

Tara Rusling | 3 comments I have read the Demonica series, Lords of the Underworld, Black Dagger Brotherhood, The Trylle trilogy, Wings and Spells, I have started Hollowland but got distracted by the Sentinal wars, I am currently on the second in that series.

message 41: by Lissa (new)

Lissa (windphyre) | 4 comments Looks like you have a guardian/'surprise! you are really blah creature and your destiny is blah' theme going there. :) I haven't even heard of a couple of those, but you are the 3rd person this year to drop an Amanda Hocking title my way. Got a review you can pass along?

First thought would be Sherrilyn Kenyon. I LOVE her Dark-Hunters Series, Chronicles of Nick (YA, but connected to the DH so its best to start with DH), and The League Series. She also has the Lords of Avalon Series which I never really got into, but looking at your book list might be more up your alley.

Kresley Cole has the Immortals After Dark series. A lot of people who are into BDB, Lords of the Underworld and Demonica series really like the IAD series. (Reading BDB and Lords as well)

Alexis Morgan's The Paladins series might be something you want to check out. I will fully admit I lost interest in it around book 4.

OH! Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress Series! 1 of 2 of my new favorite PNR/UF author discoveries of 2010! The other is Rachel Caine. I'm in love with her Weather Warden series!

I'll stop there cause I don't want to over load you and I can keep going! LOL

message 42: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (lag28wa) Hi!
I'm Lindsay,26, married, with an 8 month old baby boy and I followed Tara here! Lissa I JUST sang the praises of Sherrilyn Kenyon to Tara on Facebook. I think she'll like them. I really enjoyed her books!

Also Tara you can read the Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian, those are pretty good too and similar to BDB with a couple of changes. Some people didn't like them because they were so similar, but I found the similarities comforting.

As for myself, so far I have read BDB, Demonica, Dark-Hunter/Dream-Hunter, Midnight Breed, and just started on LOTU. I have the first book in IAD, so that is definitely on my list.

I guess I probably got into this kind of reading after reading Twilight and then wanting something a little more *ahem* grown up. BDB was my first foray into adult PNR! I think so far I prefer PNR to UF, though to be fair, I haven't given UF too much of a chance, I didn't like Sookie Stackhouse, and I have a hard time following one main character through several books which happens a lot in UF and infrequently in PNR. Sometimes there is just too much angst for me to handle! I inevitably get pissed and end up throwing things. Haha. But there are so many people raving about the Fever series and some of the others that I am really intrigued and I might have to give it a go!

message 43: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments Hey Tara, welcome! If you look around the threads you will definitely find discussions going on for different series. The folders are set up by author so just take a peak in a few and see if any of them strike your fancy.

Some of my favorites:
Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs
Psy/Changling series by Nalini Singh
Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh
Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews

Also another idea is to look through the group's bookshelf for ideas or through another friends bookshelves.

Hope this helps!!!

Hey Lindsay, welcome to the group!!

Some UF books are darker and more action filled than others. Have you tried Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs yet? That's considered UF to some people and it's a very light almost like PNR book.

My suggestion would be to start with the less intense UF books and see if you like them and then if you do move on to some of the darker and more complex books.

Also another great series: Dark Swan by Richelle Mead first book being: Storm Born (Dark Swan, #1) by Richelle Mead

Sorry if I've mentioned books that you've read already!

message 45: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (lag28wa) So do all UF books have just one main character or maybe 2? I know there is no HEA, and I don't need that as much as I just go crazy with the "I love you, no I hate you, no I love you! No, I hate you, I'm going to hurt you, now you hurt me, I hate you, no I love you, do you love me?"

Welcome Lindsay! I also am enjoying the Midnight Breed series. Don't love them as much as BDB, but they are good. And I also could not take Sookies dramatic adventures thru the south. First book I ever thru across the room. BUT Eric is such a hottie!

If you are interested in some sexy and funny shifter stories Shelly Laurenston/G.A. Aiken has a few series. The Dragon Kin books are some of my favorite re-reads.

It depends. Usually Uf follows one character through a series, but the side characters are also usually the same.

And UF also usually has the conflicting love triangle (some books have more than 2 love interests) But some authors do it really well. Yes it can be frustrating sometimes especially if you like one of the men/women more than the other but a good author does it well enough that it's a tease, but it's a good tease.

Here's a link to one of our threads where people discussed their favorite UF series (to give some more ideas): http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

message 49: by Gray (new)

Gray (dontbendpages) | 3 comments Hello everyone, my name is Gray and I love Urban Fantasy and some Paranormal Romance. I haven't picked any racial favorites (ex. vampire, shifter, werewolf, faery, etc), but I mostly enjoy contemporary fantasy (ex. alternate versions of now) in both.

message 50: by Cyndi (new)

Cyndi | 1 comments Hi,
I'm Cyndi. I usually read non-fiction stuff about gardening or cooking, knitting pattern books, and parenting (mostly attachment). But recently I've been tired with reading just the facts (or in the parenting books case, just what the author thinkings are the facts). I started with more of a science fiction bend - as it is one of my favorite movie genres. Then I checked out Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series and I've been won over to the UF and to a lesser degree PNR but who knows what I'll find here - looks like the perfect place to find some good reads and broaden my interests :-)
