I thought we tried to stick with beheading here? To make sure nothing comes back...

message 354: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I have finished Radiant Shadows by Melissa Marr so that leaves about 200 on the old dusty shelf.

message 355: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I broke my "no buying books" month...

It was a charity used book sale that I volunteer at. I found hardcovers of the Omnibus for the first three Dragonriders of Per, Illusion by Paula Volsky and Doomsday Book by Connie Willis .

message 356: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I totally understand falling off the wagon for that!

message 357: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I volunteered a second time today and found hardcovers of Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill , Owlflight (Owl Mage Trilogy, #1) by Mercedes Lackey , The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King , Nerilka's Story by Anne McCaffrey , Tiger Burning Bright by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Hidden Currents (Drake Sisters, #7) by Christine Feehan . I hear Feehan is good :)

In good news, the book sale earned $85,000 for the children's hospital yesterday, and the sale continues until next Saturday. A worthy way to break my tbr challenge!

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Wow! Great job, laurel!

And great finds, too!

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Those are some great finds, Laurel!

message 360: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Finished Hex Hall and Into the Webb yesterday. Does anyone else feel like they aren't making a dent. I haven't added anything and I have read about 10 books but don't feel like I'm making any headway.

message 361: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Slowly but surely, you'll do it, Tracy. I would probably think of it like a savings plan--doesn't seem like much at first, but you build the habit and at the end of the year, you've made a big change. Or look at percentages, if that makes it appear like you've accomplished more--10 books sounds like a lot to me! Nice job!

message 362: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 857 comments It feels that way, it's why I do it for longer periods than a month. 10 books is really good, Tracy. It may not seem like a lot but that's a good sized dent. I haven't made it through a lot of books this month, they've been long books: Anna Karenina and Inheritance. I know there's more but I can't remember them. Smilla's Sense of Snow.

message 363: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Thanks for the encouragement Carol and Jackie. I may be knocking it down a little this month but I have many more to add. Oh well, I guess it's a never ending cycle.

message 364: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) I've been doing this since January and I broke it this week - the office building sells second hand books for 50p each with money going to charity & I saw Odinn's Child & Layer Cake and just had to buy them :S

I'm still going to read a few others before I get round to them but still, I only have 48 books to read before clearing my shelves/eReader :D

message 365: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Hmm. Clearly the "charity" hook is irresistible to thoughtful and generous readers.

How can I use this for evil purposes? Hmmm...

message 366: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) TBH, most of the books that end up on the charity bookshelf aren't that appealing but I saw Layer Cake and wanted & then Odinn's Child was right under it - if they weren't so apppealing & so cheap I wouldn't have caved... honest!

message 368: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Another one bites the dust. Cheesy huh? Finished Fear by Michael Grant.

message 369: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I am doing well this weekend. I finished Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs and now going to finish Meeting Destiny, hopefully.

message 370: by J.W. (last edited Apr 29, 2012 05:28AM) (new)

J.W. Griebel (jengri) I think I need to do this. I've bought forty books this month (I got two gift cards) and my "to-read" pile keeps growing.

message 371: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Good Jesse, we need a larger support group with this bunch, self included.

message 372: by Jackie (last edited Apr 29, 2012 07:47AM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 857 comments We do...because we have no self control, lol

OK, so, who didn't buy books or add to their TBR pile this month?

message 373: by J.W. (new)

J.W. Griebel (jengri) It's too hard to have self control--so many books come to my attention that sound like great reads.

message 374: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I did practice restraint and only added two but come Tuesday I will be adding more. I do fairly well about buying books. Usually get them from the library and they will order anything they don't have.

I have about sixty books that aren't even on my to-read, hah.

Ok, so MrsJ's influence (bad mod!) and the unused gift cards led me to buying the books I mentioned, but at least all were read and all were off my 'to buy' list (if i really love a book, I'd like to have the print copy, preferably hardbound). So I indulged, and with gift cards and sales, only $22. The Night Circus, The Wood Wife The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making and Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Would have got Tigana but couldn't find a B&N hardcover.

So I guess it's a wash for me--no 'to read' books on my shelves (besides the library's), but I did buy a few.

message 378: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) I think, starting tomorrow, I'm going to go on a 'no new books' binge for another few months, I have more than enough to get through and one month of buying for every three of not seems fair enough to me (why yes, I am trying to justify my guilty actions ;D)

message 379: by Laura (new)

Laura (booksbytheflame) I may have mentioned this before, but it got to the point where my mother banned me from buying books because I had so many un-read ones on my shelf! She told me that I could buy more after I was down to two un-read books :/ Not fun, but I did it!! XD

message 381: by ~Thena~ (new)

~Thena~ (athena-nadine) | 48 comments Well, I'm in. I will TRY to not buy any books in May and read what I already have. :)

This is going to be so hard...

message 382: by Pauline (new)

Pauline Ross (paulinemross) Okey dokey, end of term (ie April) report:

I read 7 books (nearly 8 - might just squeeze that one in under the wire).

Excluding reference books (which I'm not counting) I bought 4 books, and 3 of those were either free or cheap, which I feel obliged to buy now because the price might go up. Only 1 was full price (and it was pre-ordered, so it just appeared!).

So I've reduced my tbr pile by a whole 3 (possibly 4) books. Do I get a cookie?

message 383: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments *hands chocolate chip cookie to Pauline*

message 384: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 857 comments We all get chocolate chip cookies for Effort. We tried and that's the important part.

Err, wow, what justification! lol

message 385: by Sandie (new)

Sandie | 1 comments I had to comment - my "pile of shame", as my friend Charles calls it, is probably sitting at around 30 books. What about a policy of read two, buy one? Can it work?

message 386: by Becky (last edited May 03, 2012 06:34AM) (new)

Becky So I've been really good about not buying books.... except then I found OpenLibrary.org and now I odnt have to buy my books, but I still have to prioritize since you can only check the ebooks out for two weeks. I really just want to quit my job and read everything...

So between librivox.org (free audiobooks), gutenberg.org & archive.org (free ebooks), openlibrary.org, and Baen's free library... I dont so mcuh "buy" books as collect them for a later date :DDDD

message 387: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Well, now I'm going to have to join the group for real. I was at Half Price Books, quite sincerely just looking through the sci-fi-fantasy hardcovers for any books to upgrade when I discovered they had a 20% off sale. 20% off at a used bookstore is ridiculous. So thanks to you GR peeps, I have a pile of TBR on my self--and all of them look delicious! Spin (courtesy of Maggie), Song of the Beast (I know that was someone in FA), Boneshaker (ditto), The Book Thief (heard a lot about it), and a Valente book about Prestor John. *Swoon*

message 388: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Spin and The Book Thief are both awesome, I haven't read any of the others.

message 389: by Maggie (last edited May 29, 2012 05:18AM) (new)

Maggie K | 730 comments Yay Carol!

and as for my tbr update....well...

move along peeps...nothing to be looking at here :S

message 390: by Tracy (new)

Tracy My library had a book sale two weeks ago and you get whatever you want and give whatever you want. Since they don't want to keep any of the books they encourage you to bring boxes and bags. My sister was her from FL and I tell you we racked up. I got The Bride Collector, The Hunger Games a few Ann Rice and many more.

message 391: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I finally borrowed from a friend the first two in Robin Hobb's Liveship trilogy, which has been on the #1-3 spot on my tbr list since I became active on here.

message 392: by Tracy (last edited Jun 02, 2012 08:14AM) (new)

Tracy I am going to try this again this month. I have 200 plus on my TBR pile and I did pretty good last time.

You are in for a real treat! I absolutely LOVE the Liveship trilogy by Robin Hobb! In fact, I should probably dust off my copies and read them again. :)

carol. | 2616 comments I'm about to blow this one... Have an upcoming trip to NYC and a planned stop includes The Strand http://www.strandbooks.com/ which boosts 18 miles of books.

*swoon*

message 395: by Jackie (last edited Jun 10, 2012 04:36PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 857 comments The Strand will make anyone blow their challenge. Resistance is futile.

sooooo freaking jealous!

message 400: by Katy (new)

Katy (kathy_h) I did great in April, really overdid it and bought many books in May and the first couple of weeks this month. I am going to jump back into the piles of books at home for the rest of the summer! I really don't need any more books... Until of course all the new ones I've been waiting for are published in August. I've got a lot of reading to do until then though. Wish me luck!
