So not what I was expecting. Loved Kristen Ashley's Colorado Mountain series but so far the Rock Chick hasn't been as good. Both the story and the writing are really average.

I might reconsider this one. It is on my TBR pile....

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments @Laura - It's not bad.... I just haven't gotten much story yet I feel and I'm almost half way done. It's a lot of back story on her life when she was alive and little info on the afterlife rebellion. A lot of talk about demons and angels and moving on. I don't know. I haven't wanted to toss it out yet even though I usually shy away from all things with religious undertones so I guess that says something. I'll let you know what I think when I finish.

Camfaz | 11 comments Broken Hart I just abandoned reading this book by Ella fox due to all the grammatical errors in the book and by the page 13 the main character had still not left the shower with the author describing every single minute details taking place. With things like "I blow my hair dry, which i do in record time". And if you think the hair drama stops here... oh boy...

So i had a very good laugh after reading that then called the entire thing a loss as i was quite tired by then of editing the book and stopped reading. Happy reading to anyone else who wants to give it a go.Broken Hart

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Level 2 (The Memory Chronicles, #1) by Lenore Appelhans - ★★☆☆☆

Just finished. Not a fan at all. I felt the book sold itself like a dystopian novel but was more about figuring out how to move your soul on to the next level by viewing memories from your life. It all takes place in the afterlife. It definitely skirted around religious topics too much for me. I can deal with talk of angels and demons but this went further then that. On top of that, I was just bored. I won't be reading the next in the series.

I'm also reading The Host (The Host, #1) by Stephenie Meyer , but it's a really slow read for me. Sure, it's really good. But it seems like i'm not getting anywhere, i read and read about the same thing and it's like i'm still stuck on the same page even if i aren't. But i do like it.

message 1170: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished reading The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck by John Steinbeck. The Grapes of Wrath is a beautifully written but extremely moving and heartbreaking novel with interesting, realistic and well-developed characters. I love John Steinbeck's wonderful writing style. I just loved his fantastic vivid descriptions of the landscape and the people. At times the descriptions of the barren landscape and the appalling conditions the family have to put up with is very depressing. I wanted to put the book down sometimes due to this but I'm glad a persevered through and finished the novel. This novel well deserved the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction it won in 1940 and it really is a masterpiece of 20th Century literature. It is definitely a must read! Four stars!

Now I'm about to start on The Divide by Nicholas Evans by Nicholas Evans.

message 1171: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've just finished The Divide by Nicholas Evans by Nicholas Evans and Plum Lovin' (Stephanie Plum, #12.5) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich.

The Divide started off so well but the plot did get quite slow halfway through the book. I did wish it would speed up at times but the story did remain strangely engaging. The last 60 or 70 pages of the novel were just as gripping and compelling as the first half of the novel. To tell the truth, I enjoyed the family drama sub-plot a lot more than I liked the murder mystery plot but I think that was probably because I didn't like the character of Abbie all that much so I found it hard to care about what happened to her. I loved all the vivid and wonderful descriptions of the Montana setting and landscape that made me feel like I was actually there. Nicholas Evans has got a great writing style and I love his use of language and imagery. I gave this novel 3½ stars!
My full review can be found here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I love all the regular Stephanie Plum novels but I'm not sure I like these between the numbers novellas. I was very disappointed by Plum Lovin'. Nothing much happened in it and it was extremely dull and boring. It wasn't anywhere near as funny as the regular novels do be and I really hate the supernatural element in the novella. I gave it 1½ stars!

I just finsihed Finding Frank by Martine Lacombe . Finding Frank is a page turner from the prologue to the very last page. Frank's story had me smiling, laughing and yes even crying at times. The book is very thought provoking as well as very sad that there are senoir citizens falling through the cracks here in the United States. Frank's story also hit close to home for me because my Husband and I will be two of the 71.5 million that will be over 65 yrs old by 2030 here in the US. I absolutely recommend that everyone read Finding Frank because it is very informative and very much eye opening.

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) Yesterday I finished The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly by Jennifer Donnelly. The Tea Rose is an extremely well-researched and well-written novel which is packed full of unexpected twists and turns throughout the story. I absolutely enjoyed this book! I thought this book was very gripping, intriguing and engrossing tale and I found it very hard to put it down for long. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next! I fell in love with all the main characters. They were all so interesting, compelling and very well-developed, especially Fiona. As soon as I finished this novel I brought the sequel, The Winter Rose, on my Kindle and I'm really looking forward to reading it!

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished reading Me Before You by Jojo Moyes by Jojo Moyes and The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway by Ernest Hemingway.

I loved Me Before You from beginning to the end. It's a very complex novel. It is well-written, heart-breaking, gripping and deeply moving. I cried my eyes out several times while reading this book. I don't think I've ever cried this much while reading a book before! This novel deals with the topic of euthanasia and could have been really depressing but it's a credit to the skill of the author that she makes the book so readable. This is a thought provoking story and, whatever you feel about assisted suicide, it will make you think about how you would cope if suddenly all your choices and decisions were taken away from you and you had to rely on others to do everything for you. I gave this book 4.5 Stars!

message 1185: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments I just finished Paper Valentine by Brenna Yovanoff and loved it! The storyline started out rather slow, and I honestly thought I was in for a long line of "Oh he's soo cute" and "I can't bare to live without him" scenarios. While there was some of that, Yovanoff really surprised me with how she pulled the storyline together in the end. At some point I found myself unable to put the book down because I was so deeply involved in the characters and wanted to know what happens next. I even teared up a tiny bit during the big climax scene. Yovanoff definitely has a way of artfully depicting the ghosts used in the story and really revealing some intimate truths about her characters. Bravo.

Sasha Sinclair (SashaSin) | 2 comments Just finished reading A Sealed Fate, which is a great read of you are looking for something very different..certainly not a conventional thriller at all.

Been such a cold winter in NYC, so I loved the fact that ASF was set in the hot climates of Dubai and Cape Town. This certainly is a book where the author with her affirnity for place will transport you to another world. Not only will your mind be taken on a journey to physical places, but your soul will go on a journey to, as the book's theme is that age old battle between fate and freewill. The guiding theme is wrapped up in a psychological thriller which thinks out the box, never mimmicks and always surprises. The author takes us on leisurely tours of the City State's night spots and its haute cuisine; we rub shoulders with the beautiful and rich but we never travel far from that naqging question of destiny and the price you have to pay to change it. The work builds up to a tense and truly novel conclusion. All in all a cracking debut with some very good stuff going on in there.

I highly recommend it:)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've recently finished reading The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway by Ernest Hemingway and Lean Mean Thirteen (Stephanie Plum, #13) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich.

The Old Man and the Sea
I enjoyed this book. At 127 pages, The Old Man and the Sea was a quick read. I managed to read the entire novel in just under an hour. It was a touching and thought-provoking tale. I admired Santiago's determination and his refusal to let his spirit be broken. I loved Ernest Hemingway's writing style. I thought it was very similar to John Steinbeck's style (who is my favourite author by the way). Although it is a very short novel, the story got quite slow and repetitive in places. It is a good novel but I honestly didn't think it was worthy of the Pulitzer Prize it won in 1953.
My full review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Lean Mean Thirteen
I enjoyed this book but I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as the previous instalment, Twelve Sharp. The plot was predictable and virtually nothing happened in it to develop the characters further. I'm getting tired of the love triangle with Joe Morelli and Ranger and I wish Stephanie would finally choose one of them or else dump them both and date someone new! Janet Evanovich has let this go on for far too long and now there's no sexual tension left between the characters.
