Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I finished The Iron King and was rather disappointed. I think I'm gonna re-read Inferno. I could use something light and fun after that last one.

Angela (bookangel2) | 1454 comments I finished The Dogs of Riga yesterday - quite good. Have now started A Changed Man and Other Stories - have read the first story and think I'll get on fine with it. I love Thomas Hardy's novels. When I read his work, I'm in Dorset again - one of my favourite parts of England, after Norfolk!

Peter Medley | 1 comments The Perfect Deceit

An intriguing and fascinating book on how countries vie against each other to be top dog on the world stage. Spies, double agents, love triangles -- it’s all in a day’s work for super spy Alexey! In today’s interconnected world, this book gives an interesting perspective on how much competition goes on behind the scenes with ambitions and stakes running high. Hearts are broken and for some power is gained.

Illuminating book on the espionage sphere. Lots of mind games involved. Great book with high drama which makes for a perfect summer read!

Eric (beefdurkee) | 122 comments I started a third book this month, The Arraignment, just could not seem to settle in on one till the end. But reading 3 of them seems to be working.

message 226: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I'm reading Dead to Writes by Cathy Wiley (fun), The Help by Kathryn Stockett (which I'm loving), The Quiche of Death by M.C. Beaton (also fun in a slightly acerbic way) and (as ever) The Master and Margarita. I think I'm actually making some real progress with The Master and Margarita and can even foresee a time in the not-too-remote future where I finish it!

message 227: by Flora (new)

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I finished A Reluctant Queen: The Love Story of Esther which I really enjoyed. I also just finished Tiger's Curse and didn't really care for it. I'm currently almost finished with Darke and love this one. I think this one is the best of the Septimus Heap series.

Chemical Sensitivity, Volume I

I think this is the most important book you can ever read if you can get a copy. I had to get it on interlibrary loan and wish I could afford to own it.

message 234: by Angela (new)

Angela (bookangel2) | 1454 comments I finished The Poison Tree this afternoon and shall finish the Thomas Hardy short stories today, as well, I hope. Think I'll read one of my library books next - The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and also make a start on Let the Right One in.

I read "The Outsiders" in high school and it still is one of my favorite books. Ponyboy "Pony" Curtis is the one I most identify with. I'm interested in your opinion of this book.

I hadn't heard of the book until a few weeks ago, when I read about it on this site. I was really pleased to find it when I went to the library on Wednesday - was reading the Preface last night but just had to go to sleep!!

message 237: by [deleted user] (new)

Today I picked up 4 more books at the library and started 2 of them. One looks very good but there is too much bad language and garbage in the other for me. One the girl drops a cigarette butt in her mother's drink to see if her drunk mother will swallow it. That gets me down right from the start and I had such high hopes for this book. Tithe

and this one is very good so far:
Daughter of the Forest

Hi Eric
Well, I finished The Outsiders this afternoon. I think it's an excellent book - I love the characters and yes, I think Ponyboy is a wonderful character. I just wish I'd come across it in the 1970s, when I was teaching English to teenagers. It would have been a great book to teach about characters and for all sorts of discussion topics. Still, better late than never - I've been able to enjoy it for its own sake!

message 239: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments I have read the first three pages of the poison tree five times now and still not got beyond that. It could be me, but do you think this one I should press on with or put to one side for another time.

message 240: by JackieB (new)

JackieB | 251 comments If you've tried it 5 times and got nowhere with it, maybe it's just not your cup of tea. I think I'd move on to something else and forget about it. It's annoying if you've just bought it, but there's no point flogging a dead horse. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing.

message 241: by Flora (new)

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I've made it half way thru Titus Groan but I just don't think I can drag myself thru the other half. I'm gonna put it on hold any maybe come back to it. I think I'm gonna start Dracula in Love

I've no idea why I can't get into it. I'll go back to it in a couple of months. Sometimes you're just not in the mood!

Angela, I was like that with Let the right one In. I didn't like it from the start. Too much nasty imagery!

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments A friend bought me Fantasy Lover after a silly girls night in (I won't go into what the comment was to trigger such a gift)! I've read about 50 pages and oh my word! I'm blushing even telling you I'm reading it!

Oh My! That look quite something. I'm in two minds whether to add it to my "maybe to read" books. Mind you, there's no way I'd get that out of the library! One of our librarians looks like he's only about 12 (I'm sure he'd be delighted to hear that, since he's clearly old enough for a full time job, but it's the truth). He's definitely not old enough to be handling books like that.

Glad you all warned me as I do not like nasty imaginery myself. Sookie is fine for me. I am enjoying Born on a Blue Day very much and also Fall Down Laughing. Learning lots from both of them.

Born On A Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant

Fall Down Laughing: How Squiggy Caught Multiple Sclerosis and Didn't Tell Nobody

One of the reviewers of Fantasy Lover said it was really (intentionally) funny and there were lots of references to cheese. Are both those statements true? If they are, I'm going to have to read it, it sounds surreal (hopefully in a good way).
